Fukushima: Japan prepares to discharge water from the plant into the sea

Fukushima fishermen admit they are worried about the reputation of their products but insist they 'appreciate the efforts' of the Japanese government.

If China had discharged nuclear waste water, the US would have said it was unsafe and would have imposed sanctions. As for Japan, they don't criticize, they prefer to drink the waste water

China is not to be trusted because it does not publish data. Japan is trusted because it is a member of the IAEA and publishes its data and conducts its work in an open and transparent manner. Japan is on a totally different level from China.

As someone who went through full body radiotherapy before, this is a nightmare. Every crevice and species of the world will be implicated. And the government will just shrug their shoulders like its nothing. Like their decision in WWII, their actions come with shortsighted implications while sweeping the long term repercussions under the rug.

Never discharge radioactive contaminated water into the sea.

If IAEA thinks that this radioactive water is safe, then TEPCO should ship this "safe" water to them for consumption.🤣

What people fail to mention (sometimes deliberately) is that Japan is one of the top financial supporters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In 2020, Japan was the 5th largest contributor to the IAEA's regular budget, providing 7.8% of the total budget. Japan is also a major contributor to the IAEA's technical cooperation program, which provides assistance to developing countries in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In 2020, Japan was the 2nd largest contributor to the IAEA's technical cooperation program, providing 12.4% of the total budget.

Japan said it is safe because the water is filtered. If that true why are they dumping to sea. They should dump into their own land. The japanese polititions keep saying it is safe, why do they use as drinking water? it's simple. It is not safe and as a matter of fact, it is very dangerious. Japanese polititions and tokyo electric are lying.

In your country, do you disperse treated wastewater over the land from wastewater treatment plants that normally discharge into the sea ? Do you use it as drinking water?

makes sense sushi is so popular in an area where the fish come pre-cooked by radioactivity thus negating further preparation.

I was thinking about mycelium recently, & came across this. Most Fungi, that could help counter radioactive waste/matter/water, cannot live where there are heavy concentrations of Na(sodium.) Luckily, we have phytoplankton. Since marine phytoplankton contains a low level of iodine, it can reduce the impact of radioactive waste to slight degree. However, u would need a LOTTTTTT of plankton to achieve this level of contamination that we are dealing with & any animal that eats this plankton is going to be chomping down on some good ole radioactive waste. As far as micro-algae & seaweed, they often also contain iodine, but they too, will be eaten by marine wildlife or humans, who eat it directly, or somewhere higherup on the food chain. 🤷🏼 Cool. Did I get that right? I think so....but someone tell me if I missed something. Either way, this is sickening. Pls, enough water has already been dumped, y'all should have had every precautionary measure taken into consideration before building these plants to begin with. Can we pls ban nuclear plants already? Fusion over fission.

I think it's interesting how most publications seem to focus on tritium. Tritium is an isotope of hydrogen, and water with this isotope is chemically identical to any other isotope. This is precisely why this tritium cannot be filtered but only diluted. The implication is that the tritium in the water with the recorded concentrations would have negligible effects on marine life. These water molecules theoretically cannot bioaccumulate based on an understanding of chemistry. However, these interactions are still up for debate, especially considering the beta-radiation, and no conclusive study has been done concerning tritium. What concerns me more is the filtration process. Although multiple countries and the IAEA have majority agreed that ALPS filtration is effective, there are also reports that there are varying levels by each reservoir. The issue is that no one seems to link these sources but instead point to the scientist who said so, which makes all this literal hearsay. The common argument that, if the water is safe, then the offending Japanese should drink it is absurd. The fact is that the population most affected is the Japanese. The water will be recycled in their rainwater, fish, produce, and any other aspect of their lives, and these scientists and government officials know that. Japan also has a deep emotional connection to radiation that stems beyond the Fukushima disaster. To claim the entirety of Japan as the selfish, thoughtless enemy is apathetic. The more significant issue is the damage to the reputation and trust. The fishermen are not simply claiming they don't trust the water. They are also lamenting how this event sullied foreign relations, especially with the campaigns by the Chinese government to ruin trust further. The Japanese government should have completed this with even more transparency because the official sources testing the safety were inadequate to convince everyone.

As I understand it, the Japanese failed to meet the safety requirements during the construction of this nuclear power plant, which has led to the crisis they are faced with now. A responsible nation, in order to prevent safety concerns for the planet, should increase their reserve of tanks used to contain the contaminants, not release it into the water. Ocean life is looking pretty grim as is…
