Thank you so much - this is the best review I've found for this camera. Finally a review that covers the vlog features of a vlogging camera! So thorough for beginners and more advanced camera users.

Thanks so much for this video this is the most informative video/vlog video I have seen on the S-X20. I have many Fuji's and love them for photography and static video shots from a tripod. Other than that I leave the Fuji at home for any needs for just vlogging. I sure hope on day Fuji will figure out the IBIS so I can use that beautiful 10-24 lens but it's unusable on any of the bodies I own currently including the X-T4 and the X-H2. Thanks again for another great video. Cheers.

I love the in-depth details you made sir, I would like to ask if this budget camera is suitable for making filmmaking? Like if you can make a action film for example
@MaartenHeilbron

Thanks for your kind words. This camera is suitable for very low budget video production if your distribution will be an online service like youtube. In the right hands, I can see that a larger budget production may consider this suitable for a specific effect, for example mounting the camera in a location where a better camera might not fit, or the risk of damage is high.
Thanks for the videos! Found them through a link on Reddit. Great content! Just bought an X-S20 myself... (almost all of the images/videos on my site are taken using my iPhone), and will be recording more videos in the future :)

Just subscribed. Great classy review. Just wondering if X-S20 can be switched to S-mode (Shutter Priority), set (lock shutter speed) at 1/60 sec, press the Video recording and let the camera control the exposure by choosing the appropriate f-stop and ISO ?
@MaartenHeilbron
11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and the subscription. Yes, of course that's an option - but not in vlog mode (which I was illustrating). When not in vlog mode, I'd recommend manual. The aperture is stepped (so you can see it make adjustments). AutoISO handles the transitions more smoothly. Setting f-stop manually also allows you to dial in the amount of background defocus for the scene.

You do a great job with these insights. For image quality, IBIS, dynamic range alone(no ergonomic, WR, video specs), how is the XS20 different from the XH2S for 4k60 mode? Is the $1200 US price difference worth the cost?

I can tell you as an owner of many Fuji bodies that beautiful 10-24 lens is horrible for vlogging on any cameras I have tried it on including the X-T4 X-H2 and X-S10. It is particularly bad at 10mm and while walking it has crazy worble. I was hoping the S-X20 would be better but I'm not encouraged by what I have seen so far with other lenses and vlogging.

Just a question. In your garden clips where you are sitting and commenting, i understand you are using 16-55 lens. Just curious what is your focal length set and how far did you keep your camera ? Just curious as perspective looking astonishing.
@MaartenHeilbron
11 ай бұрын
For the wider shot, the camera is farther away with a focal length about 50mm. For the closer shot (where I bring the fan in for its closeup) the camera is closer - about a metre with a wider (probably about 25mm) focal length. To achieve maximum defocus, zoom in and stay far from the background. Thanks, always nice to hear from someone who appreciates the details.
Hi Maarten, A comprehensive and much appreciated review. Unfortunately, as I am more photographer than videographer, I don’t understand a lot of the technical references here. Do you have a video that explains, what the difference is between frame rates and how and when they should be used? Also, do you have any advice and thoughts about using the XS20 for web streaming? I would like to use it for high resolution Web calls and conferences, and while I have tried, it stopped working after 40 mins, presumably because of over heating? Kind regards
@MaartenHeilbron

You might enjoy this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGWmxsyAfNDZlJs.html as a video primer. If it overheated, you'd see that on-screen. Is it possible it's a limitation of your streaming app?
Hey ! Thanks for that great review. I can't find any information on that anywhere, but is it possible to shoot in ProRes 422 (HQ, LT...) on an external recorder ? I know it's possible for raw output, but it feels weird to me that it wouldn't be able to do other formats.
@MaartenHeilbron
11 ай бұрын
That will depend mostly on the capability of the external recorder. This camera can output that quality.
The image quality and color is as good as it could be expected from a Fuji, the video and the tutorial are fantastic. The stabilization is abysmal, so once again gimbal or nothing if one is to do traditional walk vlogging.
@MaartenHeilbron

I fully agree with your assessment. Fujifilm's video stabilization is suitable for some static shots and is challenged beyond that. I always prefer to show the results and allow my viewers to come to their own conclusions. Also, it's difficult to combine multiple roles (presenter, camera, etc) in one person - although there are some who manage this much better than I do.
@dasnack

@@MaartenHeilbron Oh, for sure it's difficult to juggle all those roles, but your videos are always informative and pleasant no matter the format. At the end of the day, the consumer must access as much information as possible to make the best choice for their particular needs.

@MaartenHeilbron

Lower resolution.
Bought it, tested it for 4 days, sold it. For a camera made for hybrid shooting, the EVF is well below par for 2023. The joy stick is small and cumbersome, and it needs a few presses before changing any part of the menu. The missing D-Pad is a real dealbreaker, and moreover, less customizable buttons. The only positives are the ergonomic handling, and the video options. Waiting for the Sony A6700 or A7C II.

at 4:49 the IS MODE option is showed as greyed out in the on screen display. Is it possible it wasn't on at that point? I'm hoping that means it wasn't enabled, because if it was, the stabilization is just terrible. I have an XS-20 on the way and I was hoping the stabe was at least OK.

I have no explanation for the application of various crops under various conditions. Other than to suspect it's a processing issue - to conform more easily to 16x9. I found that the IS on the X-S10 was too sticky in video and would fight deliberate camera movements making the video appear to jump between stillness and movement. Has this been improved on the X-S20?
@MaartenHeilbron
10 ай бұрын
To a certain extent, yes. Are you using a tripod?
@maureengrove2516
10 ай бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron No, I was using it handheld. Mainly used for casual videos of my young kids. I need to be able to follow them around without the camera constantly trying to freeze motion and then jumping to "catch up" to a deliberate tilt/pan. I desire IS in video to behave like moving the camera through thick honey (smoothing out fast shaking while allowing slow movement) and not like it's toggling between the 2 modes of freezing all motion and then jumping into deliberate motion mode (if that makes sense). I returned the X-S10 with 16-80 f/4 because of this annoying video querk. You say the X-S20 is improved in this regard?

Yea I think this and the autofocus performance is why I am going to order an A6700. I want to try the X-S20 so bad. But I can’t get past the additional crop for slow motion work and autofocus. While the AF was improved, it just isn’t on par with new Sony offerings.
I know it's time consuming, but would have been helpful to have tested the recording time length of say 4K and 1080p in 10bit 4.2.2. I know for a fact that 6.2K's limit is 45 minutes.

I believe the 11-20mm isn't optically stabilized, the only Ultrawide lensesfor fuji with OIS are the two versions of the 10-24mm. And although I see people complaining about it, I find it usable on my X-T4 combining OIS+DIS. It gives 1.1x crop, but really if you stable in post you'll be getting similar crop anyways. Now Fuji ain't no Panasonic with ibis, people walk like 3 legged elephants and want gimbal smooth footage. Let me tell you this, only Panasonic will give you the best yet not perfect stabilization in-camera, no Sony, Canon, Fujifilm, or Nikon will deliver butter smooth IBIS, period. If you go micro 4/3 then you may have some IBIS luck with Olympus bodies. Otherwise learn to step smoother or get a gimbal. Or just get the Lumix S5ii and enter the Panasonic fold, which I'm ever interested. 😎 👍
