The xf200 is optical perfection, and as usual that comes at a price ! Carrying this lens around on hikes is no fun! It is insanely heavy, and more so compactly heavy… dense… carrying it around is really tough. I choose the 100-400, and for the past years more so the 150-600. Neither of these of course come close to the optical quality or the ability to render smooth bokeh, as this beautiful beast…

Great review, thank you! I own the XF200 and love it. The most beautiful looking lens as well. I use it for fashion photography, which replaced my trusty 300mm f/2.8 full-frame lens.

John, fantastic review! I've just moved from micro four thirds to Fujifilm and bought the 100-400 mm prior to watching this video. As a fellow South African that organizes safaris in Africa to my client base in the USA, I found this review to be incredibly helpful, and I feel really happy that I made the transition to the Fujifilm platform and purchased the 100-400! I purchased the 100-400mm the moment it was released and it has collected dust for the last couple years. I started shooting with it for something different once COVID hit. Wanted to mix up my shooting. So many times I have said the same thing "this amazing lens is so under rated" It now rarely leaves my XT4. Even for close up nature, plants, environmental it's stunningly sharp. Thanks for the excellent video!

Great review John. LOVED the ending too....LOL I have the 100-400 and although I’m NOT a wildlife tog I use it for some of my equestrian cross country events and the odd wildlife holiday trips. Sadly, this lens out of all my arsenal I own, i get the least satisfying results from. My keepers are way out numbered by soft images. I know there have been a number of people struggling with this too but equally others that have no problem. Love to chat more with you off this platform I’d possible. Thanks again for great product review on these two lenses

Hey John, I do own the 100- 400 Fujinon ansd right from the start I was impressed with it's capabilities, reach, contrast, sharpness and color rendition. I have used it to shoot some wildlife, but most action water sports. The surfing shot I have taken look great regardless of the focal length. I would love to own the 200/ 2, but for the moment that is simply out of the question. I do own the 50- 140/ 2.8, this lens is also good, although not as sharp and contrast as the 100- 400... Cheers, keep up the good work!

Hey John, I know this video is a couple of years old and you may not see this comment, but just want to say how much I’ve enjoyed the inspiration from it as I’ve probably watched this video in its entirety at least 5 times! I finally got the chance to visit Kruger on a family trip to SA just a month ago according to the date staying at Kapama Private Reserve and it was so worth it! I didn’t have the 200mm and I still long for that lens, but my 100-400 was really my primary lens on my XT3! I probably used the 1.4 tele converter once the entire time but the lens performed well without it. I’ll probably make a video of my adventures soon on my channel if you care to watch and I must say I really enjoyed SA so much that I plan to visit again in the near future and hopefully next time have that 200mm alongside my 100-400. After visiting there this video makes a lot more sense to me and I envision myself on those game drives when I see the images at the beginning of this video. I did see the big 5 luckily!

Another amazing video of you - thank you very much for your efforts John. Some of your shots are nothing else than just incredible and moreover I like the funny end with your family and you lot. If there is anything I could criticize then maybe that at the beginning you showed many photos and they were awesome and I know as photographer you want to show them but you didn´t say anything to them. That sequence felt probably a little to long even if I like the pictures a lot.

Hello John! Wow that was an excellent review of those two lenses with so beautiful pictures! I own also the 100-400 and I am very satisfied with it. I love Wildlife, especially in Africa. When I was on Safari in SA and other countries I used the 100-400 on my XT-2 and the 50-140 on the XT-20. I would never miss the zoom range because you can create different compositions and you are better prepared for sudden happenings. For me that is more important than a faster prime lens in this kind of photography. I am so glad you mentioned these advantages in your review, so often I heard that the fuji 100-400 is not that good as those lenses some professionel wildlife photographers use. I always was very satisfied and I am happy to hear from you as a professionel photographer that you find this lens also very good for wildlife. Thank you so much for your videos, they are always very helpful. Please keep going on! I am following your channel for quite a long time and I like the funny ending of this one! Thanks Timothy, I appreciate your kind words. The hat is unfortunately, at this point, only available for fujifilm employees and x photographers. They allowed me a couple giveaways at one stage, but I am however working at making them available to the public. I’ve told fujifilm that I’ve had many enquirers for the hat, hopefully it will be made available soon.

John , in 2019 i was in your beautiful country and neighboring Botswana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania and it was an unforgettable experience. We were booked to come back in 2020 but everything fell apart due to Covid and we had to cancel, heartbreaking. We are booked again for 2021 but maybe it wont happen either. Greasy videos. Your pics are amazing. For a trip to Svalbard in April with Fuji gear, what would you take? Thinking 10-24, maybe 16-55, and renting 100-400 and/or the 200mm. Probably hard to juggle between 3 or 4 so wondering if worth taking the 200 mm. Quality is amazing though so hard to make a call. What would you take if you have two bodies?

Hello John. Man nou verlang ons terug SA toe! Saw your video when I was researching the Fujinon XF100-400mm. Great work Boet! My wife and I went to Fuji X-System a year ago and LOVE it. Canada's season to do wildlife photography is very short, so I have to decide very quickly to buy this lens to add to our kit. Then as soon as flights return to near normal, dan kom ons SA toe! I have subscribed and will be checking out all your work. Great video and awesome photos. As an ex PH I can assure you the bush is calling harder everyday. This time around the Fuji will enjoy the outing and not the 7mm Ruger. Keep up the good work!

Hi John, fantastic video. As a fellow South African and having the love for Nature and Photography. For some time I have considered changing to Fuji. Wanting to travel lighter as well as getting away from the typical mainstream photography, be more directed towards fine art and not all focus on hair pin details and sharpness. Not that the Fuji system is not sharp but, provides a great deal more flexibility and creativity. I would like to contact you to discuss this change as I am now at a stage where most of my current gear is sold off so ready to make a move.

Great video John. I came from another brand also and I agree with you that the 100-400 is an outstanding lens. It's sharp at both ends and focuses fast on my X-T3. I'd love a 200 but it's pricey. Come on Fuji, please put this lens on sale once in a while. Great ending to the video. Thank you!

Mark Casebeer wel, Fuji is working on their versions of the equivalent 300/4 and 500/5.6 PF lenses as Nikon has them currently. I’m sure they’ll be somewhat expensive, but far cheaper than the 200 f2, and much better focal length for wildlife and action.

@@AlexanderBischof they actually dropped hints to this some years back, 3 I think in their official presentations. But, as you say, nothing has come of it, so it’s unfortunately just speculation at this point. I’d really really love those lenses, as I love my Nikon 300pf

Thanks for your time and comment. I actually only shoot RAW, so I don’t rely on any profile in camera. When imported in Lightroom, one has the option then to add the fujifilm profile in post production. For a while I did, mainly using pro neg hi, but of late I just edit the Raw as is with no profile. I will be making a video soon on profiles and raw processing.

@@JohnArmstrongPhotography Cheers for that John,reason I ask is that I got back into Fuji because of the out of camera results...I must admit I like to shoot jpeg because of that.I only have the basic LR and had it for years and it doesn't support xt2 and many more modern cameras,''oap'',not flush enough...although you can still do enough pp for my means ...thanks for the reply though

Im not sure if you've ever played with shooting in full manual mode with auto iso, instead of aperture priority for wildlife. For me it made everything more efficient and I use that like 95 percent of the time im shooting wildlife now. Love the video and the info! Seems like the xt-4 would be a great pairing for the 200

Cheers Garrett, thanks for your time and comment. That’s pretty much how i shoot, so I’m either in aperture priority using the three auto ISO’s with three shutter speed options I’ve set before, also limiting my ISO. I acres these very quickly though a function button, so a simple tap gets my shutter speed to where I want it. What often happens is that I need a shutter speed that sits outside of what I’ve set and I just set my shutter manually, so effectively shooting full manual with auto ISO, both options get used equally. Thanks again.

Beautiful opening sequence and amazing photos throughout! From your professional perspective, are there still lenses missing in the Fuji lineup? Obviously Canon and Nikon still have a far more extensive lineup, especially for things like wildlife and sports.

Cheers Robert, I appreciate your kind words. Fujifilm GFX has certainly got some way to go, but for the most part the XF range covers most things. Obviously for the work I do, I’m satisfied. I’m sure there are definitely areas for improvement. I would love to see Fujifilm attempt a seriously fast wide to mid range zoom, like a 16-55, but will a faster aperture, like a 16-55 f1.8 or even a f1.4. It would be big and expensive, but could be a good option for many professionals who might opt for that instead of multiple fast primes. Cheers

Agree about GFX, I'm surprised they haven't released 1-2 faster lenses which would have a depth of field the same or narrower as the fastest FF glass. Really enjoying your quarantine video series!

Great video John, thanks. Quick question, I often find I get soft images with the 100-400 even though I'm using really high shutter speeds (1000-2000) and I'm positive focus is correct. I've read that this can stem from using the "continuous" IS mode and the softness is an artefact of the stabilisation itself. It sounds a bit weird to me but have you encountered this? Any thoughts appreciated.

I haven't tried the Fuji version, but on Nikon and Canon you should switch IS/VR off when going to shutter speeds faster than 1/1000s to avoid blurry shots. So yes, it seems weird, but the IS can blur shots.

Hi John, Great Video and amazing shots. I'm very lucky to have a trip to Sabi Sands later this year (hopefully I am even luckier to be able to go). I use both a GFX100 and XT3, I am considering the 100-400 and the GF250. I am guessing if I only take 1 system you would go with the 100-400 on the XT3. I could possibly take both but that would be a lot of gear. BTW I liked that cap of yours so much when I saw it a while ago I had one made up (don't tell FujiFilm), Lol. I got some funny looks when I visited the house of photography in London.

Lol, love that you made yourself a cap, good job. Thanks for the comment. Wow, the gfx100, how amazing would that be for wildlife, as it is a fast performing medium format. Especially if you plan for a more fine art feel, giving you lots of room for edit. The XT3 with the 100-400 would certainly be in many ways an easier setup. For me personally, that would be the way to go, but then again I’m getting work out quickly. Shooting for yourself is different. The gf250mm is amazing, but like the xf200mm, really needs to be paired together with a zoom, as shooting with one focal length may be tough. Have you considered the gf200-400, yes it has a constant f5.6, but with the gfx100 ISO performance, may not be an issue. I’ve used this setup before for doing action portraits of professional hockey players and it is a great lens, great image quality. I hope you make it out to Sabi Sands, amazing place, enjoy!

You have managed to get some excellent shots with these lenses. Nonetheless as European wildlife tends to be smaller in size I cannot help the impression that a 200-600 zoom lens would help filling the frame.

Thanks for your kind words, I unfortunately have no experience with wildlife other then in Southern Africa. We do have plenty small antelope, and the 100-400 (150-600mm in 35mm sensor equivalent) was perfect. Obviously if your wildlife is mostly found or seen on foot, getting close enough without being noticed is a skill on its own. Thanks again.

" Even, if report is first of all about a Canon lens on a Fuji X-T3, it shows the limitations of the Fuji XF 100-400 for small wildlife.

I sold my Canon 7D and 100-400 mk1 lens sometime ago with the intentions of upgrading. I was going to buy the Canon 90D and 100-400 Mk2 but I am not reading very good things about the 90D. Very finicky about what lens it likes. That leaves me out. I like the X-T4 a lot but I am worried about the quality of the fuji lenses. If the 100-400mm Fuji lens is as sharp or sharper than my original 100-400 Mk1 canon, I have no problem upgrading immediately. I enjoyed your video a lot. Long but I watch the whole thing. I have subscribed to your channel.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate your time and comment, yes that was a long video😃. Firstly what I am telling you now is not gospel, it’s just my opinion, please do as much research as you can. I came from Canon, about 18 years of shooting it only, starting with film camera, then the 20d up to the top DSLRs, 5d and 1d. I also used the 100-400 mk1 at certain times for work. Combined with the 7d, I would say at the very least it would be on par, and that’s conservative, but really, in my opinion it’s better. Your initial concern shouldn’t be about the Xf 100-400’s quality, it’s more about accepting that you will have an adjustment period coming from a dslr to a mirrorless camera (if you haven’t experienced it), it will take time, but once you wrap your head around it and work out how best to use it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t switch earlier. Whatever your decision is, enjoy.

@@JohnArmstrongPhotography Thanks John for the reply. This will be my first Mirrorless camera. I watched a complete tutorial on the X-T4. It seems simple enough though a little different. I should adjust quickly. I started on Nikon and switched to Canon. I always liked the Canon system but they have no camera right now ( In a cropped Sensor ) that I am even the slightest bit interested in for wildlife. I am going to watch some more videos on the 100-400 lens and if all looks OK I will buy the XT-4 in the next few weeks. I wish I could directly attach the Canon lens to the Fuji Camera. LOL!

Using this lens with the Xt4/IBIS on a tripod, do you suggest OIS on or off? What if hand holding? OIS on or off?

Thanks Garry, supposedly on the xt4 and with these lenses you can leave on ibis and OIS both on tripod and in any situation hand held. My personal opinion is no you shouldn’t use it in certain circumstances. I would turn off both on tripod (on some fujifilm lenses you can’t turn off OIS, those you can, turn it off), I would turn off lens OIS when panning, very difficult to track left to right with OIS, it keeps trying to hold the frame and causes a jumping action in your viewfinder, and lastly if hand held, if I have time and if I remember, once I get over 2000th of a sec, I turn off both, I’ve found that IBIS and OIS have occasionally created some quality issues at fast shutter speeds. If you are jumping between slow and fast shutter speeds in varied light, just keep them on. Hope that helps.

Is the 1.4X converter that came with the Fuji 200mm, compatible with the Fuji 100-400mm? Should I not purchase the 1.4X for the 100-400mm now and wait until I purchase the 200mm, to save money? The Fuji 200mm f2.0 is on sale now for $5000, a $1K savings, lol.

Thanks for the question. I’ve never used the 1.4x extender (made for the 200mm) with the 100-400. I’ve tested it briefly and it fits fine, auto focuses works and it extends, but strangely gives you a constant f8 throughout the zoom, which isn’t bad, but unusual. I wouldn’t purchase it until you are 100% sure it is compatible. Contact Fujifilm in your country, I’m sure they can confirm. My recommendation would be to buy fujifilms TC 1.4 or 2x adapter made for the other lenses including the 100-400.

​@@JohnArmstrongPhotography so, from what I have gathered from you, the extender that came with the Fuji 200mm f2 (white) is a totally different specie from the other 1.4 extender (black) that Fuji also offers?

so, are you still shooting with Fuji? or have you abandoned the crop sensor system and exclusively shoot Full Frame now? I have watched your other video re: prefer shooting FF over crop sensor in March 2020. This video is April 2020.

I don't really consider the 100-400 slow. It's an equivalent 609mm f/5.6, which is good, really. Just one stop off of a $13,000 600mm f/4. I'm usually sitting at f/5.6 to f/8 anyway so for me, the vast majority of the time, not having that f/4 isn't a problem at all. I have also found that 200mm isn't quite enough reach for me. I guess you could put a tele on it and you'd have a 420mm f/2.8. Not sure about the image quality with a 2x tele, which would give you a 600mm f/4 equivalent. I'm wanting Fuji to release a 400mm f/2.8. Now that would be a lens to have! lol But, I hear they are releasing a 300mm and a 500mm soon, so hopefully they're not too expensive. Great video, btw. Thanks your time and comment. Agreed, I don’t see it as slow, I think it’s more of a perception out there. I’ve heard it mentioned by a fair few people, especially those who don’t use long telephoto lenses often and when they think aperture, only think depth of field, not exposure. They immediately see f5.6 more like f8 in equivalence on apsc. It’s an unfortunate trend. Some also find that extra stop beneficial, like the difference between shooting at ISO 800 and not 1600, but as they say, each to their own. I’ve been on wildlife shoots alongside photographer friends using the 600mm f4 and other 35mm sensor lenses and they cannot believe how well my apsc and 100-400 perform, especially considering the size and ease of all my gear in comparison. For me personally I love the balance it offers me. It will be interesting to see what Fujifilm has up its sleeve for telephotos going forward. Cheers, thanks for subscribing.

I learned a lot and took down some notes on your comments. I'm a beginner and most definitely leaning on KZread about videos and photography work. I'm planning on getting a Sony a6600 or Fuji xt4. If possible could you give me advice which camera I should select for videos and photography? If you have a better option for me would be helpful to as well. Peace and love from East Harlem NYC...

Well this comment comes from the future 😂……. 2024. And Fuji still haven’t given us a 300 or a 500! But from experience the 100-400 is a beaut, no question.

I have been on game drives in Zambia and SA, but have to admit your photos are a whole lot better than mine. I am also a fan of the Fujifilm 100-400 mm, as well as the 50-140 mm.

I’ve had many ask, unfortunately I don’t think Fujifilm make them available to the public. Fujifilm SA made them up for the x photographers here in SA. I’m currently setting up an agreement with fujifilm, where I can buy hats from them and sell onto the public, I just got to get permission from high up first and find a way to distribute locally and internationally.

Hi, John Greetings from Ireland I have been undecided about buying the 100-400 there are no reviews comparing it to any other lens my question is. Is it sharp like the 50-140 or is it more like 50-200 regards sharpness thank you.

Thanks Martin, hope all well in Ireland and surviving the lockdown. I don’t know the 55-200 well, but have heard it performs well. I do know the 50-140 and would recommend it. It offers a focal range that is far more forgiving in most situations, when starting at a 100mm, it can be limiting. Both I would say are equally sharp, the 100-400 has the reach, the 50-140 has the 2.8, which for some is very important. If you do any portrait work, 50-140 all the way, plus can shoot wildlife and has the option of an extender. The 100-400 is not a portrait lens. Hope this helps, thanks for your time.

John is the thinking man's photographer. Wonderful to see a video that the maker enjoyed making. Re the 55-200/50-140 comparison, I have both but am completely blown away by the 50-140. I have the 100-400 and used it on a boat to shoot - photographically - whales. I was surprised. I had previously used the Nikon 200-500 in the same situation. As John said , less weight means more shots. It was great. At least as good if not better than the Nikon. BTW, also, it is FANTASTIC for landscape photography. Make sure you try the OIS off if you're on a tripod. Thanks, John.

Seeing your shots again, I was wondering about the fact that in the wildlife situation, you don’t get out of the truck. So no possibility to get down to the subjects level. Long lenses therefore rule, I guess. Thanks to your insightful comments, I got that. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. Great video and fantastic photos, however I think you should make the effort to not use the word game as here it is perceived as the animals the elite would go to hunt. Lioked and subscribed...

Thanks Jean, you would have a clear understanding if you lived where I live. This 1080p video you watched took 14 hours to upload, actually longer because the first time I tried to upload it, the connection crashed after 6 hours and I had to start again. And that’s with a web optimized compression. My finished edited video stored locally is in 4K and I would love to share it at 4K, but don’t have the patience for a full two-three day upload, hoping my connection holds up. I’m hoping my content supersedes my lack of 4K.

100-400 Only 3 tiny screws screwed into plastic holding heavy front elements . VERY cheap quality, Disappointing

Great review John. LOVED the ending too....LOL I have the 100-400 and although I’m NOT a wildlife tog I use it for some of my equestrian cross country events and the odd wildlife holiday trips. Sadly, this lens out of all my arsenal I own, i get the least satisfying results from. My keepers are way out numbered by soft images. I know there have been a number of people struggling with this too but equally others that have no problem. Love to chat more with you off this platform I’d possible. Thanks again for great product review on these two lenses.
