What's your favourite Fuji lens? I'm biased towards fast primes in this video so haven't used many Fuji telephoto zooms. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Used to be the 16mm 1.4 for a long time, nice look and pseudo-macro. But the 18mm 1.4 is superior and the 33mm 1.4, and 56mm 1.2 WR while not quite as sharp, are my favourite two lenses because of the rendering.

Mine has to be the 18mm F2. Super small and light-weight with good enough lowlight performance, making an amazing "always on the camera" type of travel lens. When it comes to value, I'm also a big fan of the xc 35mm F2 (plastic version) again for its lightweight and especially its affordability. I believe the xc 35mm F2 is unbeaten in any other system in terms of price to performance for a nifty fifty.

The reason I moved to the ZF was because I was tired of waiting for the xpro4. Now I feel that even if Fuji released it tomorrow I wouldn't get it as I don't think it could compete with ZF. Small M mount glass and the TT artist 6 bit adapter that you recommend are game changers for me. I also think Nikon could possibly release a rangefinder style FF. Wouldn't that be a dream.

I felt the same way. I have been using Fuji since 2017. I bought the X-T2, X-T30, X-E4 and also the X-T1 + X-E1 used. I have the Fuji Crons and the 56 1.2 Gen1 and otherwise adapt old glass. I've been waiting for the X-Pro4 and also thought about going for the X-T5. Unfortunately, the workmanship of the X-T5 is really crucial once you have had the X-T2 and X-Pro2 in your hand. X-S and X-H series arouse zero emotion in me. I could imagine a soulless Sony. After waiting forever for the X-Pro4, I switched to the Nikon Zf and haven't regretted it. Autofocus can finally be used for things other than houses or trees and even detects eyes from more than 1 meter away :-) We don't even need to talk about the processing. This one fits! Too bad Fuji. You have lost a lot of your magic and are increasingly becoming isolated because you think you will disappoint loyal customers with the TikTok hype about the X-100 series. I will still keep some of my old Fuji equipment because the old parts were still honest!

Hello Jack and thank you for this video and the perspective you’ve shared. I’m a LONGTIME Fujifilm shooter, since 2015. That said, I left the brand 2 years ago. I still own a Fujifilm camera, the best one the ever made for street and travel photography in my opinion. The X-Pro3. I’ve owned a LOT of Fujfilm cameras and it was the first one I own that felt right from the moment I picked it up. I jokingly refer to my X-Pro3 as the Leica M-D because my LCD and sub monitor no longer work and I still shoot with it because everything else does work. But I’ve moved on to other systems. I bought the Nikon Zf in December 2023. I’ve loved that camera ever since I purchased it. Like others have stated, I too was waiting on the X-Pro4 in hopes that Fujifilm made a great update to the X-Pro3. Instead of doing that they’ve abandoned the X-Pro line in lieu of the X100, X-T, X-H, and GFX line of cameras. It’s a mistake but it’s theirs to make. I shoot Leica and LUMIX as well, the M10-R and SII. This rounds out my toolkit of cameras which are nothing more than tools for different use cases. I share all my M mount lenses across these systems and only own two autofocus zooms, the 24-105mm f4 for the LUMIX and the 24-120mm f4 for the Zf. There’s nothing I can shoot with the lenses I have across all of my digital cameras. I really tried sticking with Fujifilm for all of my cameras but I couldn’t wait for them to get the X-Pro line back on track. Keep making good, reasoned, and meaningful content. Just know it’s appreciated.

We own a lot of the same kit! I totally tried sticking it out with a Fuji only setup but I couldn’t keep upgrading for incremental gains while they figure out the lineup. They should have a lot of funds now from the X100VI, let’s see what they choose to do with it. I love making these videos, will work hard to make new content that’s better and more meaningful. Thank you!

I bought into Nikon Z from Fuji a couple of years ago. I kept a few lenses, along with my X-T10 body, valuing them more than I would get on the used market in Japan. The 35/1.4 is my favourite. The 50/2 is a close second. Surprisingly, the 50-250 is one of my faves for walking around Japanese cities. Now that I have the Zf, I adore the 26, 40, and 135. The former two are incredibly easy to pocket and give excellent results. The latter is just so good that it’s worth the burden when I have specific human subjects I plan to shoot. The 50/1.8… I’m afraid it’s often at home. I love the images I get from it, but it’s almost always just due to the lighting and subject more than the rendering or sharpness. Don’t get me wrong, the rendering is beautiful, but the light matters 1000% more. The 40mm in gorgeous light will absolutely destroy the 50mm in mediocre light. In equal light, the 50mm will win. Edit: I did also own the 16/1.4, 23/1.4, and 56/1.2. All fantastic lenses with which I took some of my favourite photos. However, their new turn for bigger and more-corrected lenses while not paying as much attention to UX caused me to look elsewhere. It seems to be that way; the underdogs listen to advice more intently. Fujifilm must not be feeling like an underdog these days, while Nikon’s early mirrorless missteps took their egos down a few notches.

The 135 plena! I will have to try this lens out next time I'm at a camera shop, every raves about it. Very interesting observation about the "underdog" status and how this translates into products the core user base actually want. How every brand balances this with expanding their market share is what I always look for.

Man, I relate to this video on another level. I am deep on OG gear as I've been shooting with it since 2016. I also own an xt3, which I never felt the need to upgrade. Since, I've owned the xpro3 and have owned and upgraded on the x100 series since the T. However, I've always had to supplement with nikon for my wedding photography. Owned a D850 for a long while and jumped over at the ZF on it's announcement selling my beloved D850 and lenses in the process. Do not regret it one bit! Wow, I am in love with the ZF and the 1.8 trio. Got a 40mm f2 and it's amazing for travel and street. I might just end up selling my older fuji gear except for one body. Problem is, the mental struggle of losing so much invested $ in the process makes me just wanna keep it all. Anyway, love your content and the format in which you present it. Very refreshing and inspiring. Hope you keep creating ZF content as the community is growing and those who keep the camera enjoy the experience. It also seems as if the ZF crowd is more respectful than other communities I've been part of (x100v/vi users,... geesh). Anyway, thanks for the vids! What are your thoughts on the z6iii coming up?

It may seem surprising or outside the price range, but after being with Fuji since the X100, purchasing the X-Pro1, X-Pro2, and X-Pro3, I’ve seen the brand move in a direction that resonates less with me. I love the close-to-photography feel, the small compact lenses that offered real pleasure in taking photos, and the hybrid viewfinder. However, in recent years, I no longer feel aligned with the Fuji lineup. I made a big decision, sold all my Fuji gear, and finally bought a Leica M11 and a Nikon Zf. Yes not the same budget but it’s exactly what I wanted my Fuji to feel like. And the Zf is truly what Fuji couldn’t achieve. No regrets.

I picked up a ZF a couple months ago and fell in love. It has all the retro appeal of the old Fuji XT line, with modern tech and speed. My last Fuji camera I truly felt a connection with was the XT2. I have the sweet of Fuji first generation lenses except the 56mm. I never really liked that focal length, and instead adapted 50mm film era lenses. That is why I wish Nikon would make a 70mm f2 low element lens to compliment their compact/budget 28mm and 40mm. Thanks for another insightful and interesting video.

The 1.2 voigtlander lenses keep me with Fuji. They’re probably some of the softest lenses on the market lol but I feel they have a magic look that can’t be replicated. Basically gets me to that retro look I like with the least amount of editing. I’m probably the only person in the world that thinks the xpro3 is the best camera ever. The ribbon issue is worrying but never had that problem with the dura silver version. I love that screen too that everyone hates. My favorite screen ever. The fastest flip down, and that’s really the only ‘flip’ I need. I don’t really review photos until I took a number of them so I prefer the no chimping. I feel that Fuji could have positioned themselves so much better in the market but they dropped the ball somewhat over the last 5 or so years and although this has made me feel a little behind the curve, I love the form factor so much that it’s enough to keep me loyal, for now. Al I can hope is that the profits made from their more mainstream lines will allow them to indulge us with the Pro4. I can at least dream!

Nicely thought out video! If Canon or Nikon comes out with a FF retro rangefinder with matching rangefinder lenses, the X-series is pretty much dead without an absolute banging X-Pro 4/5 release. All the better if all manufacturers facilitate LUT-loading like Panny is doing with the S9. The thing I think we don't know is the size of the retro camera market versus, say, wedding shooters, that don't care about looks, so not sure if any other manufacturer will really invest in these kinds of cameras. Fuji has always been the kind of quirky, unique cameras (X-Pan, GA645, etc.), so not sure if it's history or market size-driven.

I'm now curious if Nikon will release more retro style glas in the near future, specially the demand for apature rings on the lenses is there. Couldn’t agree more. I still occasionally shoot the x-pro 1 and 2 with the 35 f:1.4 gen1 or the 18 f:2 but I have not upgraded beyond that. I’ve tried newer Fuji bodies and lenses but Sony is better in every way if you just want a competent electronic tool so that’s what I shoot now. There was something unique about the rendering of the 35 f:1.4 on the first 16mp Xtrans sensor especially in b&w, that I have found nowhere else. Unfortunately my Xpro-1 is showing its age now, the OVF overlay is so dim it’s hardly visible even with a fully charged battery…

Hi Jack, this is a very important video for me because you're addressing the very issue that remains top of mind. My favorite Fuji set up for just the sheer beauty of the images is my X-E2 and the 23 f/2, followed by the X-T30II and the 35 f/2. I do use the X-H2S for event photography but only I have only one gen 3 lens; the 33 f/1.4 for portraits and use the third party sigma lenses for wide angle. It's sad that as you said, that I cannot rely on autofocus on the gen 1 and I am starting to wonder if should switch to Nikon for my events. Yet, the glass is $$$. On paper, this would be the thing to do but what will I give up? Plus as you mentioned, it's no longer a weight issue if I switch to Nikon. So I will keep on at the moment with third party lenses for Fuji, use the Zf for street (40mm and finally got the 50mm f/1.8, wow!) If the X-Pro4 comes out, it'll be interesting to see how things change. Thank you for all you do!

I think Fuji is no longer concerned with the things that were the reason for many of us back then to go with the x system, even though we were aware that we weren't getting the best performance. But Fuji had a magic and nostalgia that made you forgive a lot. The Kaizen was still real and the film simulations straight out of the camera were beautiful. Other manufacturers did almost the same thing here, while Fuji started to go deaf. Yes, Fuji is still successful and products like the X100 VI prove them right. But they are past their peak. And the biggest mistakes are always made at the moment of success. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm no longer waiting for it; I've moved on myself. I don't leave on bad terms and wish Fuji all the best. I don't regret the change. Yes, Fuji isn't bad, even if other manufacturers' autofocus isn't even remotely close to it. Film simulations are good. But here Panasonic is currently overtaking Fuji in terms of possibilities. At the moment Fuji is still riding the wave of success and this is exactly where the mistake lies. You think you know everything better and no longer listen to the loyal users from the beginning. Where has Kaizen gone? It just fixes bugs, but doesn't bring any improvements. Also improvements that would be possible without any problems and free of charge for Fuji. For example, you can save the white balance individually to the film recipes on older cameras such as the X-T2 and X-T30. Prices of the new cameras are going through the roof and the quality is being reduced in return. But Fuji should be happy to serve TikTok users. They're here today and tomorrow at the next hot shit. All of this brought me back to Nikon after 8 years. All the best Fuji. It was a nice time despite the sad autofocus. I'll keep the X-T1 and 2, as well as the X-E4, but I see the future with Nikon.

I shoot both Sony and Fujifilm. I own the x100vI, x-pro3 and x-e4. I love all of them especially the x-pro3. I have the fujicrons but my favorite lenses are the Viltrox 75mm and 27mm f/1.2. They are incredibly sharp wide open and the bokeh is amazing. The drawback is that they are bigger lenses. But amazing value for what you get. I like the looks of the Zf but do not need a third system. Although I can adapt Sony glass. The normal jump I see KZreadrs make is Fujifilm to Leica.

I shot Fuji X and I currently shoot Nikon Zfc (next to Nikon D810). I really could not stand Fuji’s RAW file and focusing. I got so frustrated I sold my gear and just remained 100% Nikon. Nikon never let me down, I have manual lenses from the 1980s and all metal Voigtlanders from F-Mount that are amazing on my Zfc. I’m now dreaming about the Zf, but I would need to sell one camera, I can’t justify having 3. I love the Zfc due to being light, but the crop sensor is so limiting. Full frame is just something else… Tough decision.

Man, talk about bad lighting- good videos back in the era!! Everything shouldnt be a show....After years of studio photography with flashes digitalbacks in controlled enviroment with top quality lenses etc, I tried x100T and felt a long forgotten joy of capturing life, back then it even worked directly with inxtax printers!. Then I got the Xpro2 as it gave everything I wanted from that idea itself. Years later I upgraded to a Xt5 due to lack of xpro4, tried 33mm 1.4. It was really good optically and body was pretty great. Then I started to question of size and pricing, like a kit now was similar to a fullframe now without the vision/design of the Xpro body. After 9 years with Fuji I transition back to Nikon with ZF (with 35-40-50-85) and again feeling that idea I mentioned at the start. If I am going to carry large lenses I see no reason not to love Z mount S lenses, and they are cheaper, faster, brighter, optically better than Fuji too. Small 40mm is pretty good for old style optics with (underrated) insane AF and price. Adapting Leica M mount lenses or virtually any lens mount to Z mount is a bonus. For me, the only Fuji from the old days are X100 series now, unless they come up with a proper high end brick style Xpro4 with new small lenses. Even so, Id most likely check out the next Ricoh GR or a used m10 instead, dont think ill change systems anytime soon. On the other hand its great that we have so many options and many of them are incredible, including Fujis. Cheers for the great insights and detailed talks!

We are on almost an identical journey through gear! The Zf is everything I wanted from a Fuji, minus a few ergonomic quirks. I loved my Ricoh GRIIIX but it died a very quick and strange death (shutter blades bent and wouldn’t close) and there’s no support for repairs. The M10 is amazing, I’d go with that system full time if I didn’t need AF for photos of my kid!

I'm a Nikon shooter who dabbled in Fuji and used the XT5. I loved it. However, after the ZF came out, I agonized and went back and forth before selling the XT5 for the ZF. I also sold all of my lenses but kept the Zeiss 32 1.8, my favorite X-mount lens, because it’s fantastic. The ZF is a more capable camera, and I love the Nikon lenses, but I still think the XT5 has a better layout and ergonomics (joystick, screen, thumb rest). Still, the ZF is better AF-wise and looks excellent, too.

Been using Fujifilm for a while- xt3,xt4 and recently xt5. Recently I bought Zf with a plan to move fully to Nikon for better IQ and AF. However after recent trip to Lanzarotte I decided to keep both systems. I still reach for xt5 with 23mm fujicron or 18 1.4 when I want to travel light and Zf when I want higher IQ. X-t5 has superior ergonomy and numerous retro styled lenses than Zf. Plus I'm not sure if Nikon will keep doing retro styled cameras. Zf might as well be one and done camera. Fujifilm is built around retro design. I don't have intentions to shoot standard bulky and uninspiring cameras. My favorites in Fuji lenses are: 18 1.4, 33 1.4 and 23f2. IQ coming from them is amazing. Unfortunately Z primes have mixed reviews. Some are great, some not so much. On the other hand Nikon zoom lenses are great so trip wise it's convenient system. Thankfully I'm not in a hurry, probably will try voigtlanders as well.

Jack, Another clever and novel approach to considering this Fuji-vs.-Nikon comparison. You make some great observations. Hopefully those in the market, or with earlier Fuji kit take your advice to heart. One question - This particular video seems to be running at an accelerated speed, and the normal pauses after a thought or sentence seem edited out. As one viewer, this seems unnatural and a bit unpleasant. Are you and other KZreadrs under some pressure to shorten the run time of you vids? Last, shared love for Fuji's neglected offspring, the X-Pro line. I too started with an X100, but longed for an X-Pro. Here's another shout out to the gods that this is brought back - AND that Fuji gets their production and supply lines into better shape to actually respond to demand. Craig
