Fuji XH2s For Wildlife (Pros & Cons)
Комедия
Is the new Fujifilm X-H2s a big upgrade for wildlife photography and video compared to the XT4? Let's go out and see how this new animal eye detect autofocus works with the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6. Better lens than the 150-600mm. How's the stabilization and 4k 120p, HD 240 fps. Some pros and devastating cons that no one is talking about. XH2s vs XT4, one is surprisingly worse for wildlife. Pros Res can be used for 240p! Cinematic colors of Fuji never disappoint.

if the box is the right place, the object detection/tracking from an image processing /computer vision pov is working. This is probably done using a convolution neural network or "AI". However the focusing is done in two further stages, feature extraction to measure how sharp the region of interest is and then an algorithm that controls the focus motor that should aim to maximise the sharpness features. I'd imagine the feature extraction aspect is working well, particularly with the hardware available in modern camera sensors and chips. Unfortunately every lens focusing system is slightly different, and there are also user parameters which can override the focusing speed. This makes the continuous focusing algorithm for controlling the lens focus motor a non-trivial problem, For single point focus it's less of an issue as it doesn't have to constantly update, it only needs to lock on once. it's hard to say whether they can fix it with a firmware update, they can probably improve it, but it may work better on some lenses than others. if human eye detect has improved, I suspect it's lens specific

I’m in love with this camera and I do think the autofocus is spectacular for stills and video eye detection for people… but so far I’ve had the same results with birds. It’s very frustrating. It seems to find the bird right away and everything is good! And… then we lose the bird for no reason lol. I’m glad to hear your 240 looks bad too lol. I thought I was doing something weird. To be fair on the autofocus though, I don’t seem to remember my old r5 being much better in video. I’ve got lots of clips where it dropped the ball hard.
@jaegerschtulmann

that's such a shame as the camera is touted for fast action! what's the point of shooting so many frames per second if you can't track and keep focus on fast moving subjects! just based on footage from many channels it seems Canon and Sony are still miles ahead in AF.
@heymikeriley

@@jaegerschtulmann it tracks perfectly fine for stills, video is where the issues are but like I said, the r5 wasn’t much better. There’s a reason professional video shooters use manual focus. I don’t believe any brand is there yet with their video autofocus. I haven’t seen any examples of something I’d trust more than manual focus yet. Thanks for the honest review. I guess I made the right decision on waiting for the x-t5. I thought the whole purpose of the double stack sensor was to improve on AF over the x-t4.
@philippk819
Жыл бұрын
So you think the X-T5 will have better AF than the X-H2S? Or do you just mean the supposed advantage of the stacked sensor over a non-stacked one isn't worth the higher price? The stacked sensor isn't just about AF speed but speed overall. Higher frame rate for stills (guess you don't need a stacked sensor for 4k 120 video), less rolling shutter when using the electronic shutter. Faster rraction times in general.
Great video .. Thank you for being real.
I have used the 100-400 a *lot* for wildlife (admittedly stills) including a lot of birds, and my tip is that it seems to focus a lot better when not at 400. If you back it off a little, it often acquires auto focus a lot better. Others have covered the diopter pull-out lock - but just to add that this was a key requested feature from the users of earlier X-series cameras where the diopter never seemed to stay in position... so, sorry. We asked for that.

Thanks for do auto focus on animals as this is what I would have bought this camera for, I think I’ll wait for xt-5. But for me the 150-600 is a great lens and twice as nice as the 100-400
@philippk819

First of all, there is no way the X-T5's AF will be better. It probably will have the same AF as the X-H2 since it is said to get the same 40MP sensor. Secondly, the 150-600 seems to be the better choice for AF performance.
For the diopter adjustment, do you have to pull it out, adjust and then push it in?
7:20 you might try turning off the in camera noise reduction and then eliminate noise in da Vinci or something like topaz AI that surely will work better, same thing happening with my X-T4

Did the same thing. But sold my T4. I almost cried when I saw how good the Sony tracks the subject and focus keeps up. And the fact that the price of the H2s is same as A7iv is laughable. 🤣

@@RandumbTech Yeah, getting used to the new system, photos are much (much!) sharper. And there is something about full frame, man. There is certainly a 3d something, can't tell what it is but I can see it and I like it very much. At first I wanted to go back running to my XT3, but now that I've customized the buttons in the Sony, I'm loving this camera. Today I bought V90 sd cards and tried the HD 120 fps. Mindblowing! There is a reason why Sony is number 1 (or 2 after Canon). Regarding colors, for now I'm just adjusting contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, etc. and I like the photos I've taken. I tested my Leica R lenses, combined with the A7iv photos are beautiful straight out of the camera (no autofocus though...)
Man I love your videos, no holy cows. I bought the XH2s after great expectations, having used the XT4 with 100-400 for 2 yrs for wildlife on 5 safari trips here in Africa plus all kinds of other photography. Results were Fine but the AF have serious limitations. I also have a Sony A9ii with 200-600. Plan was to sell the Sony once the XH2s arrive with the 150-600. Forts the 150-600 f8 is a big fail so after testing decided I will never buy the lens. The 100-400 if OK but needs an upgrade. The XH2s will, initial tests made me exited, then I started to experience the frustration of inconsistency, AF shows it locked onto the bird or subject, but out of focus. Put the XT4 on and my success rate is slightly better. Compared to the A9ii... Long story short, sold the XH2s and the 100-400, kept the XT4 for travel and the A9ii with 200-600 for wildlife. Reality, Fuji is not up to it when it comes to serious wildlife, that is fine.. I still love the XT4.

Жыл бұрын
@@amitkrupal1234 yeah I mean, f/8 definitely isn't ideal. But 600mm f/8 is equivalent to somewhere around 900mm f/11-f/13 full frame. Take the Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 as an example...you'd need to throw a 1.4x converter on it to get to 840mm f/9...on the Fuji you'd be within one f-stop of that but have a greater focal length. Either setup is going to require some good light
@jamesm8935
Жыл бұрын
f8 gets you f8 light gathering, on APS-C. No difference to full frame in terms of brightness. And you were going to crop your full frame anyway. Equivalent to full frame the F8 becomes F12 or whatever in terms of background blur, and for wildlife you don't want the most insanely shallow dof... Don't forget for the fuji crop if you run that 150-600 at 400 f6.x you get something roughly equivalent to the full frame offering. Ultimately the different is up to whether you are happy with a small sensor and what generation of tech your sensor is (good high iso performance?)

also, did you had focus limiter turned on or off during the video?
I’m convinced that the 100-400 just has very poor IS since it’s an older design. But hopefully we’ll see a firmware update that helps improve performance with that lens. I’m using the 70-300 and 1.4TC and have actually found the results to be rather good. My biggest problem with this AF system is that the camera takes far too much control without the photographer being able to override it with manual inputs. For example, subject tracking. The camera is just like “I got this” and it tracks absolutely everything in the frame it thinks is that subject. Where you have your AF selection point placed has absolutely no influence in what it focuses on. With the Canon R7 and R3 you can track subjects and only track what you place your AF box over by either focus and recompose which is very quick and effective - it then to tracks THAT specific thing quickly, or by moving the AF point with the joystick or touchscreen. This system is bad. I had a lineup of lorikeets perched on a rope and the X-H2S eventually focused on every one of them even though I have the AF set to be as sticky as possible and ignore other subjects. I don’t believe these settings actually change any characteristic for subject tracking performance.
The video I've been waiting for! I don't understand the level of noise you're getting on your footage. The XT-4 was so much better with this in the 120-240 fps shooting modes 👁️👄👁️
Hey cassie, you are poping the diopter wheel up like a watch crown before turning it right? It is the same as the x-t4 diopter switch.

Pull the diopter wheel out before turning it, make sure you have the latest firmware and test out settings for AF behavior. There's effective software for noise removal to look into. For capturing (stills) moments, there's also the PreShot ES mode to consider, where the camera temporarily stores frames in the buffer as long as you're half-pressing and keeps them if you full-press, but from my tests shooting a running counter, it unfortunately seems to only keep a pace of 10 fps while half-pressing and only switches to your set frame rate for the burst AFTER full-press. I'm sorry to see that you're having a rough road, hopefully things will improve. If not, I'd sell it, because the big bucks should go towards improving wildlife, not face vlogging.

AF/Detect Lesson 1A (again!!!) -- "Detect" does not mean acquire/hold focus. The systems/components/firmware code to do each are separate. Obviously the AF system is still rather lacking -- whether or not the camera can detect an animal's eye or not. Sorta like I can detect a great looking woman at a bar -- but my system which would allow me to "focus" on her, chat with her, start a relationship, get married, have kids -- that may fail (and does!) miserably, regardless of how well I can *detect* her....

The studio footage looks amazing too. If it weren't for the 7 white hairs on your beard I would have thought you were a teenage girl. With a beard.

Hahaha, Fuji "has done it for pleasure..." So I guess you are pleasuring yourself. I don't blame you with Fuji's teenage girl skin look. I would also pleasure myself If I could make myself look Fujiesque, but I only have enough for an A7C.
Interesting video. I kind of wonder. Is your 100-400 fully firmware updated? Did Fuji do a recent firmware update of the 100-400 to pare it with the H2S ( I do not know that). So far the review on this camera are very bipolar. Not sure why. I guess I will have to find the time to go out and review it on my own.

Everything is updated, there is no new firmware for the 100-400mm. I was hoping there was.

I don't think that even a firmware update will do much. We are talking about 4k 120p where you have a ridiculous crop which reduces the phase detect points. In my opinion even if the processor is fantastic it has so much less phase points to work with. While a7Siii has only 10% less phase detect points in 4k 120p. I am not saying that a7Siii is a gold standard for wildlife autofocus but you can't beat mathematics there.
Bad recent purchase: The Sony battery grip for the A7IV. ...ridiculously over-priced, and, I hoped it would be more comfortable to hold in portrait mode, but now it's too heavy.
The Suckling Sparrow footage was phenomenal-everything else was underwhelming. Sadly. All I want is the perfect wildlife camera…
You need to pull the diopter adjustment control, then you can adjust it
Anything I look at in terms of specs and reviews always circles me back to Sony… they just have the most bases covered!
Terrible purchase decision: Fringer EF-FXII (new) with sigma 150-600 C (used with only 100 Canadian dollars off) to use for wildlife with my xt4. I regret it definetly. lots of focus hunting.
Hey Kasey I subbed on your Rumble make more content there please and keep up the good work🙏
As someone who really wanted this camera to be a home run, I feel bad for you and bummed out for me. Looks like I'll wait until the X-h2 comes out... If you take it back to Aden Camera, I wouldn't blame you.
" Its a Tony Bird, its not what I ask for" LOL on that one! Casey, hear me know and believe me later,(old snl skit) I would buy a tshirt with that blurred out pigeon Tony bird, with text of "Tony Bird" , for us long time viewers of the channel and know the brilliance of the video when you first called out the Tona when Tony took us to the beach and we could not see it. haha Seriously make that shirt maybe put your alien logo or something else on the shirt as well. you'd sell a million of them I tell ya. Your welcome and I want a cut :) bummer on Fuj though. Cheers Capn
It seems like Fuji autofocus and stabilization algorithms are locked in its DNA and no matter how much we want to believe in Kaizen we will be devastatingly disappointed 😔

I beg to differ since I have been using the X system since 2012. It has come a long way AF-wise since then. And not just in new model increments. I cannot speak for improvements in the IBIS realm though since I'm still using the X-T2 and X-Pro2. But I'm about to get an X-H2S and X-H2 to replace them...
X-H2s has a locking diopter. You need to lift the button before adjusting. I hope you see this before you get the wrench out.
You may have noticed this, but it wasn't clear in the video. You mentioned a few times that you were using animal auto focus, but there is also a separate setting specifically for birds under the subject detection menu. Maybe that would help?

@@cameraconspiracies What kind of "bird"?
The toneh bird got me good
I bought three bags of frozen falafel and two of them were funky.Straight to the trash. That's all I got man.... Enjoyed the video.
i'm using xs10 with 70-300 and it's very good for birds and other animals. maybe you just need a newer lens. 150-600 might do the job?
yea i think the 240 looks bad because it has something to do with flog2 and 1080 together!!! i made a 1st impression video about the camera and i shoot all my youtube in 1080 and tried out flog2 and it was just as grainy!!! not sure why but it was pretty frustrating lol

Flog is slightly better, but still terrible.
Have you u tried popping out to e diapter? Ie pull like an old watch dial
I need this camera now it focus worst than my G9 I need this!
I’m sure Aden camera would be willing to take it back and provide a refund/store credit. They seem like really good people there. I got soooo much fanboy hate on my Fuji AF videos. Nice to see my initial findings confirmed by experts such as yourself. You should have trusted your instincts when goofing around with the camera at the shop a few weeks ago. Lesson learned…or not 🤣. Keep being you Kasey!!
Your frog conundrum reminds me of that dancing frog from the looney tunes. Sorry for your loss
I got this camera im feeling the burn to but for people it's great 👍 👌
The XH2s is the way to go if you like super stable, out of focus birds.
Ken Rockwell was right all along - get Fujis for people and travel compactness and ignore them for everything else.

But the kicker is they’re not as compact as they used to be!
I bought the 8-16mm for $1400. 2 years later still don’t know how I feel about it. Heavy ass lens and no filters:/
If it helps, I bought an SSL Big Six while in studio moving limbo. I've used it twice in the last 6 months. Got myself a vintage Lexicon PCM-70 and PCM-80 in a deal I couldn't resist. They're not even hooked up yet because of this moving BS.
What noise pattern!?! Watching on my iPad Pro it’s barely noticeable. Perhaps editing in post on a large screen, high-res monitor you’re seeing it, but post KZread upload… nada. Looks pretty good.

lol Kas, you just learned to ETTR on video like the real pros do. We are getting there, just need that colour passport thingy to nail WB. Awesome bird on bird feeding footage tho, really good to be honest, shame about the focus hunting.
