Fuel Problems Everywhere on the Innocenti Spyder

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I take a look at my Innocenti S Spyder that has been sitting on my shelf of cars for years. It is time to fix the fuel pump and take the carburetors apart and fix the fuel leaks.

Nice helpful video with no exasperating musical torture. I’ve loved these carbs since 1969.

I get a lot out of your videos. As a rookie I probably would have pulled the carbs and rebuilt them rather that troubleshooting and repairing what was wrong. And the car would still be in pieces. Love watching a master at work.

Thanks for leaving in the part about changing up the wiring of the fuel pump. When something just doesn't seem right it's always good to double check what you're doing but then second guessing yourself is humble and necessary. Fire her up!

Hey, Steve, Watkins Glen, NY is a long haul for you from Iowa, but the featured marque of the Grand Prix Festival is MG this year. There's an MG-only car show Thursday, there's an MG-only tour, laps of the race track and laps of the old street course Friday, with preferred parking right down on the main drag (Franklin Street), and there's a concourse level car show Friday if you're free the Thursday and Friday after Labor Day in September this year (2024). A bunch of us from the MG Car Club of Western NY Centre plan to attend, quite a few staying at the famous (infamous?) Seneca Lodge.

As someone else has said it might be worth cleaning out the fuel tank just for good measure! i do wonder why gaskets were missing but it might be that someone did the job in a rush and simply forgot them, who knows? I think it is very close to running now. Great stuff Steve.👍👍

I have an Austin A30, where a previous owner has replaced the mechanical fuel pump, that it would have had, with an electric fuel pump. It never seemed to work right for me and I frequently ended up stopping with what seemed like fuel starvation. I replaced the fitted pump, with a facet pump, that was turned out to be always noisey and also failed! Something was clearly not right. The fuel tank is quite low down, and the fuel pump quite high, above the carb, like yours and perhaps not ideal. I now have a pre filter with a non return valve, just before the new electric fuel pump. When switched on, the pump only has a small amount of height to overcome. Seems to be working well, touch wood. Best of luck with yours!

I would say it's the owners who are often cantankerous. Cars like this are so simple - basic observation and "proper" repair will sort most anything with little money and few tools. SU carbs for example are SO SIMPLE yet you see hack work from the previous owner where he didn't even bother to put in gaskets or o-rings to stop obvious leaks. I've had British cars two periods in my life: 1983-1987 (in college) and 2010-present. It's a pleasure to work on them due to their simplicity and if you're used to expensive sports cars the 60s and 70s British cars will be a pleasant surprise - parts prices are generally 1/10 or less than Porsche parts for example.

These carbs were designed in 1652. There is nothing simpler than an SU carburetor except maybe a straight pin . They put them on the British space shuttle

Stuck at home by a "winter storm" today (so far just flurries and slush) and bored stiff, so I was REALLY happy to have a vicarious garage visit and virtual tinkering session with the Innocenti! I probably would have tried a little harder to clean the gunk out of the fuel tank, but I appreciate the logic if seeing if it's going to run at all before getting detoured onto side issues. Looking forward to seeing it run around the parking lot soon...

Great detail on replacing the SU float needle valves. Liked the use of the thin wall deep well socket for this, rather than searching for the SU tool that’s always in the other tool box, at home. Also liked the use of the Viton tipped needles. KG

Wouldn't be better to put the fuel filter before the fuel pump in order not crap from the tank to contaminate pump's membrane? Also yes tank seems to be in a need of cleaning... Cheers from Greece! Nice car!

No you always want the filter after the pump doing it the other way around usually causes issues.

Hi Steve, I know you have a "soft spot" for older British cars, I have a Morris Traveller from 1970 still undergoing a stop-start lengthy renovation. I just wondered if you could find time to reveal if you have had to make extensive modifications to your cars to enable you to use modern E10 fuel safely. Thanks for sharing your experience here and best regards from Ireland.

I do not use ethanol in any of my vehicles. I do not think you can make them safe for ethanol with the original carburetors. The best advice I have if you have to use ethanol is to put in an additive like Ethanol Defense.

I'm no expert, but I've watched enough "I bought this car in New York and I'm driving it home to Utah" videos to guess that the pump is doing its best, but that the tank is likely to be 'orrible.....
