Fuel pipe warning! 2CV 440-mile roadtrip to Devon (with worn-out engine...)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Some badly degraded fuel pipe almost put a stop to this mission, but I sorted it and drove my 2CV 440 miles to Devon and back from my home in Wales, despite an engine which sounds utterly horrendous now. It might be time to build a new one... (this one was hastily assembled the day before I set off for Croatia three years ago).

What a trip down Memory Lane for me! I live in Kalmar in Sweden and one day a group of Belgian lads travelling in three 2CVs rolled in to our local petrol station. 'Rolled' literally, because one of their 2CVs had had an engine failure 75 kms up the road in Oskarshamn and they'd pushed it and towed it all the way. Luckily, there's a Citroën main dealer in my town, so I directed them there and they set off pushing and towing the final 2 kms. I went by there an hour or so later and they had the defective 2CV in bits in the main dealer's car park, but they seemed to be winning. They'd moved on back towards Belgium by the evening. They'd been all the way up to North Cape (maybe another 1500 kms north) and were on their way home …

R6 is not ethanol resistant, it's too permeable. You need R9 or R14 hose and make sure you get a quality brand such as Gates Baricade or Cohline as the aftermarket if full of unbranded junk.

Oil creeping out at speed/under pressure could indicate oil filler/Reniflad in need of replacement or repair. I repaired one, pain in the bum & not that much cheaper than buying new from ECAS. Made a huge difference to performance & stopped those little oozy oil leaks.

I wonder if you can get an electric conversion for a 2CV? You'd miss the sound of that mad sewing machine up front, of course. But after a couple hundred miles of that sound (plus road noise etc) you sound VERY tired. Your final Whoooosh was the most exhausted I've ever heard it.

Could you not use the crank and conrods out of the pre-Croatia bottom end (crank linished or reground, and rods checked for size/maybe honed) in the current bottom end? Small amount of cost would effectively give you a reconditioned bottom end? Be much easier than a Charade engine I suspect!😆

The rattle does sound bad, but 2CVs never run big end bearings, do they? I have had one making a similarly terrible noise, and it was just the slack alternator belt slapping the inside of the cowling when the revs got up. However in that case, I think the belt eventually got fed up of the punishment - I think yours would have gone within the 440 mile round trip if that was the issue.

Are we going to see you rebuild a 2cv engine?

According to my local garage people are panic buying; sort of. They're filling up because they know prices are rising.
