Fu Hao - shallow hook Thumb Rings - Why and How?

The “Fu Hao” style shallow hook thumb rings from Alibow and Yuwen.
In this video I test them first time properly with 3 different bows.
Snake 26# and 30” draw, Chinese Bow by Grozer 40# and 32” draw and Xongkoro by Alibow 43# and 34” draw
They need quite some practice to get the hang of it, but then :)
I think that once you manage them, there is no better thumb ring out there

    You are absolutely right Armin! When I first started shooting shallow hook I had been shooting 60lbs with the deep hook. After two shots with shallow hook at 60lbs I decided I needed to go back down to 30lbs to learn the shallow hook properly. Always releasing early is no fun. Great review as always.

    Thank you, Armin. I've been trying to learn to use the shallow hook thumb ring since you first reviewed the Alibow version a while ago. I find it to be a challenge to not have the string slip off and then smack yourself in the jaw with your hand. I'm glad to hear that you find it to be a challenge also. Just when I feel confident with my 20 pound fiberglass Alibow tatar, I go to my 30 pound laminated Groser tatar and the learning curve seems to start all over again. But I am committed to mastering this ring. Just need to practice much more.

    Yes, I had had a similar problem with mine. I was shooting a 30lb bow and then the mighty Keshig @ 40lb and nearly broke my nose! Lower poundage and shorter distance to start. Aim small, miss small.

    @@ArminHirmer Comparing the photos of the Fuhao and the Painless ring on the Alibow website, I see that the Fuhao is more rounded. The Painless has a sharp V shape at the front where you press it into your middle finger. I find that uncomfortable. I didn't know if the V was important to the function of the ring, but it seems now that it is not. So I will file and polish my painless ring to be more rounded like the Fuhao, and hopefully that will help.

    My 50# Grozer is pretty tough to shoot with the thumb. I am putting a LOT of pressure on the arrow nock in the string while I'm drawing it. I know I'm doing something wrong but don't know what it is. I'm not having as much trouble with the 40 # Paragon.

    Since my thumb only bends 45 degrees at best, I was forced into the shallow hook. And yes, always point at the target! It doesn't happen like it used to, but it still slips out once in a while. You naturally blink and flinch just like Armin did and you have no idea where your arrow went.

    I'm very new to thumb draw. I've tried two different styles of Vermil thumb rings and just can't seem to get a secure hook. I shot very few arrows and my thumbnail was sore for days. And I had a couple of accidental releases. Just not comfortable with the technique at all at this point. Everyone makes it look so easy, but I'm not finding it to be at all! It appears that the range of motion, and perhaps the length of my thumb is not allowing me to get a steep enough angle on the string such that when "locked on", the face of the ring is roughly 45, MAYBE 60 degrees to the string. Even with my 35# bow this puts a lot of pressure on my thumb as the string tries to slide off the ring with any amount of draw. Maybe the shallow hook design will work for me as it doesn't need such an acute angle of the thumb to hold securely. Or maybe I should just stick with fingers and forget the Asiatic bow... 😕

    the slo-mo arrow flight has quickly become my favourite part of your videos. interesting results, with the snake bow plus alibow ring you have the best flight i have seen since you have been doing this view. then the next bow just awful. 3rd bow about your normal again. what do you think is causing the difference? i'd love to see a viewpoint directly behind the bow to watch the string. i think the right amount of sideways string travel is the key to getting a straight arrow without tuning.

  • @OlivierNeu

    @OlivierNeu

    2 жыл бұрын

    Your point about sideways travel makes sense. I have a Fuhao ring from Alibow and the arrow keeps hitting the bow. No problem with the deep hook rings I have... When you increase the brace height the problem goes away. You loose power this way, but gain accuracy from the crisp release.

    Can someone provide a link for the Fu hao ring ? I got the Alibow version but the grove is a quite different. And I think the bigger grove will help me with my issue. ( the alibow one is working for now with my 30" , the 50" I just got and I have to work on the strength to pull it back at all, not only with a ring ) Having big palm with fck short fingers ( literally it looks like I am missing a joint on all of them ) when I lock my thumb and index fingers , there is no place at all for the string - so I naturally string twist otherwise I cannot draw at all.

    I have been practicing Kyudo for a number of years now. And yes, IT shoots. But IT is nothing unearthly. It's all mechanics and physics, like the whole universe, but at some point you get to the point where you stop thinking about IT. You internalized IT and so the shot "just happens". But I've also experienced the same since I've been shooting so-called classic long and recurve bows. IT just shoots. Kyudo is meditation while standing. You can achieve the same thing with any kind of archery. My opinion and, I continue to practice Kyudo, every day :-).
