FTX Outback V3 | 2021 Suzuki Jimny RC Crawler First Mods

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a pretty long video by my standards, but I was enjoying it! This thing is quite fast on 3S and makes a great trail truck.
www.cmldistribution.co.uk/pro...
I've made a few mods to it now. Most obvious are the tyres - I swapped the stock ones (actually pretty soft but quite a shallow tread) for a set of eBay mud slingers I've had for ages but never really used. Turns out they're really good! Very aggressive paddles that dig in well, but soft too, so pretty good on rocks. They're a little smaller than the stock 105mm tyres, but I think they look okay?
I also changed the plastic beadlocks for metal ones, for the low-down weight. I need to get some more bolts for the centres...
Next I chopped up some old SCX10.2 wheelwells and fitted them. I'm quite pleased how they've turned out, and now you can't see straight through. I still need to cover up the rear LEDs though.
I swapped the stock electronics (which are okay) for a Hobbywing 1060 I had spare to see if I could get a bit more throttle control, and planned to gear it down. I've been foiled there so far, though - turns out the gearing is (I'm fairly sure...) 48p [EDIT: it's not, it's 0.5 mod!], and there aren't many small-tooth options out there. Also the little 390 motor has a 2.3mm shaft, and 2.3mm pinions are also thin on the ground (540s and 550s take 3mm).
Oh, and I can't find any 390 motors with high winds, or even really any that tell you the specs at all...
The spur gear's bolt pattern actually matches RC4WDs, but there's just no room between the motor and driveshaft for a much bigger one, and there's no room for a 540 with a 3mm shaft either... I may one day look at transplanting a spare 3-gear box from a 10.2 into it.
I was going to extend the light wires so the body opened fully, but adding a separate receiver and sitting it over the rear axle meant they were long enough anyway. Result. I waterproofed it, too. For obvious reasons...

    Hi there, hope you’re keeping well. That is one tough Jimny! The FTX model certainly has shown us how capable this machine is and you’ve effectively demonstrated, that in capable hands, scale like driving in tough terrain is truly possible. Nice video. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. 😉😊😉

    Thanks, and you too! Yeah, this little truck is really fun. It's so short and manoeuvrable and has a fair bit of punch for a crawler. It's not the best at fine control from 0mph, but it's just right for a trail truck. 😎👍

    That FTX really did well. Glad you included more footage of the run. The video didn't seem long at all. All the edits were smooth and crisp. The music was cool and matched the pace The rig put on a great performance. It does seem to be a lot of fun in that little 380 package. Too bad there aren't as many options for that size of motor. Great choice on the wheel and tire combo. They look fantastic with those slingers. Not only did the pairing do great in the mud and on the rocks, they looked awesome churning and splashing in the water. I loved the water crossing shot at the "falls" about the 1:55 mark. looking forward to see what else you do to this rig. Stay safe and stay tiny. Steve

    Nice video. It looks like even though it has a smaller 390 motor, it still has enough power to spool up those grippy tyres in some mud. I fancy one of these as a cheap, but fun project as they look a lot of fun to drive. If i had one i'd probably do these mods. Inner wheel wells 1080 ESC Heavyweight metal beadlocks + stock tyres Softer spring shocks (maybe run full droop) as stock ones look a little stiff, for how light it is Clear windows - maybe remove stickers and then use tamiya paint remover to clear the lexan? Although it's frustrating at the lack of gearing and motor options it's not the end all. I feel the smaller 390 motor kinda replicates the smaller engine in the Jimny. You can always change the skid plate as well i think and put in an Axial 3 speed, to use a 540 motor, but it makes them a little more top heavy, and one side in particular. Then there was the issue on older Outbacks where the extra torque from the 540 motor would break axle and prop / drive shafts in high torque situations.

  • @rccrawlersmid-wales645

    @rccrawlersmid-wales645

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! That's an ideal set of mods, I reckon. I added wheel wells and a 1060, personally, plus heavy steel beadlocks. The tyres were just what I had and worked well (especially in mud), but they're not quite right for it on rocks or sidehilling. The suspension is a little odd - yeah the truck is light, but some of the issue is the stock setup doesn't leave much travel - it's mostly bouncing because it's bottoming out, I realised. The shock hoops have alternative holes though, so I've lowered the top mountings and taken off the spring preload to let it sag back into it. It's a bit more supple now. It could really do with clear windows, true, though clear shells are pretty cheap so spraying another one might be easier. I've actually broken my shell ahead of the front wheels with a couple of really bad falls, unfortunately, so this Jimny is awaiting a fix currently (though I might put a hard body on it instead...). I genuinely expected the little motor to be an issue, but I honestly have never wanted for more torque or wheelspeed from it. As you said, it's a light truck - it just doesn't seem to matter. It goes really well. Whether it still will if I put a big heavy hardbody on it is another matter, but that remains to be seen!

    Thanks for the info! got the blue version for my lad, really impressed with it. Couple of things I wanted though was a bit more speed - your info on the motors is a great help about the 390 with less turns as i have been searching & so far nothing has been found. Also would you know about anything that can be done about the torque twist, seems to suffer quite badly. It wants to climb no problem but lifts up really badly!

  • @rccrawlersmid-wales645

    @rccrawlersmid-wales645

    2 жыл бұрын

    Are you using the stock battery? Put a 3S lipo in there (the esc is capable - just move the little jumper to set the voltage cutouff) and it's pretty nippy. If anything, I was looking to slow mine down! As for the torque twist, it's not a problem I've had with this, to be honest. I did have that issue with the FTX Geo, but going to a slower motor pretty much negated it. Maybe a bit of weight in the front / some steel beadlocks will smooth over the problem a little bit? Help keep the front end down. Otherwise you'd probably have to resort to fitting an antiroll bar, but that would require some custom work.

    @@rccrawlersmid-wales645 Hi, appreciate the reply 👍 - that's great news about the 3s, was not under the impression they ran them. Will put a 3s in for him now! Currently using voltz 4000 2s lipo's i think they are - been really good batteries even after we destroyed our carnage & bugsta brushless cars with them in! 😄. I already got him better tyres & steel beadlocks - guess i need to tweak the springs and have a mess - crawling is good but when we try the incline to see how steep an angle we can get it suffers from one front tyre lifting badly yet my trx4 sport will do many more degrees steeper and id say negligible twist. Was looking about an anti roll bar but unable to see anything that is made for them and wouldn't know where to start to try and get one to modify to suit. Is the suspension worth upgrading on them?

    @@timjoyce8047 Sorry for the slow reply on this! I haven't done much to the suspension on mine, to be honest - but I haven't had any big issues with torque twist either. I'll have to look for that next time. Is everything in the drivetrain spinning freely? And the shocks are moving freely without sticking? Worth making sure it's not just getting bound up. I did think mine was overdamped and put in thinner oil for quicker responses. My first impression is the shocks aren't that bad - probably not the first thing I'd upgrade, anyway - but smoother ones with springs you can change are always good!

Can anyone out there tell me what ESC will make a difference and give better throttle control?

    I put a 1060 hobbywing in mine and it helped a little with control, but I think the real problem is it's just too fast! It's tricky to gear down too, but I've recently discovered the motor is a 25t, so a replacement 380 with a higher wind (I've just ordered a 37t Dynamite) should slow it down and make modulating it easier. A 1080 hobbywing would certainly help you too, I think, especially as you can reduce the power in reverse. 👍
