FSCK 2024 - RISC-V - The Only Architecture You'll Ever Need

RISC-V - never heard of it? The open-source processor architecture is relatively new, but already making big waves as *the* ISA for all sorts of applications. In this talk I will give a high-level overview, technical and non-technical, about RISC-V and explain why you should care about it.

Great overview and love that the award-winning SERV, the world's smallest RISC-V CPU gets a shout-out. Small correction though. It's not FPGA only. There are plenty of ASIC implementations of SERV as well. It has apparently also been implemented in MineCraft. And just recently I learned that someone implemented SERV on a PCB. Check out the Servisia project and Liberty74 if you want to learn more about that one.

I'm curious by nature. But I haven't understand anything. I wish I would, bc I like energy efficiency a lot. I wonder if this architecture will be used or are already in use for NPU's...

I got into computer engineering solely because of my insatiable curiosity about computers. It is a rather involved subject when it goes to the level of computer architecture, but there are definitely content creators out there simplifying it for a general audience. I can recommend Ben Eater, Low Byte Productions for general viewing and Prof Onur Mutlu's channel for top tier academic explanations.

Tenstorrent is shipping its first gen RISC-V based AI accelerators (and they got software too), with even cooler designs in development. Power-efficient NPUs could use a RISC-V CPU, but shouldn't use it for cores for efficiency reasons (they're already domain-specific).

"The Only Architecture You'll Ever Need" That's what I wanted to hear. But realistically when we will get RISC-V competitor for laptops and desktops to compete with current x86 and ARM's like Snapdragon X Elite? Jim Keller said something about Ascalon compete with AMD Zen5. But will this gonna happen for consumer grade stuff?

Personally I see LoongArch being the real competitor in desktop space. Even though it's still catching up the potential is promising. But we are unsure if Loongson is going to open license for their higher end core IPs (they opened LA132 and LA264 that's for embedded use, but desktop and server-grade ones are still closed)

A long time. Anyone can design and make RISC-V CPUs; only Intel and AMD can make x86 and only ARM can license out ARM. In other words, these companies have a captive audience, and they can sell things other cannot. This is a competitive advantage, up until the point that it becomes a detriment. When that might be is anyone's guess, but at this point we're probably still a few years out from RISC-V being a valid choice for tablets and smartphones.

@@FlameRat_YehLon LoongArch has neither the market penetration advantage of ARM or x86, nor does it benefit from the open ISA that RISC-V offers. It's essentially a custom ISA limited to one company, and as it stands they are themselves fully responsible of developing tooling and software for it, which is a huge task and in most cases simply not worth it. I'm not sure how you say that it's a prospective contender. I would be surprised if Loongson isn't at least considering retooling their existing microarchitecture to RISC-V.
