Im an Australian beef producer and have the odd backpacker woofers and they tell us some awful stories about fruit and vegie picking where the hostels charge them up to $400 up front and they are supposed to house them get work take them to the farms etc. They charge for everything including $10 a day for taking them to the farm sometimes they say no work today you still have to pay them to stay and you can have no income. These are not farmers they are hostels work agents. I think its a crime and they should be stopped. John

I'm an Australian and I'm absolutely appalled at how these backpackers are treated like slaves, it's terrible and the Australian government needs to do something about this. I have read some horror stories about how some female backpackers have been sexually harassed and abused while working on some of these farms in Australia.

Hi, I am an Australian uni student working in my holidays on farms as I live in the outback. These bad experiences are almost always with labour hire contractors. They are companies which hire people and then send them to farms/factories ect for a fee by the farm owner. They are not all bad but some basically take almost all of the money paid by the people who pay them to find workers like yourself. I would recommend where possible finding employment directly with the farmers themselves and try to find family owned farms. It is a lot safer and you will have a much better experience, like said in the video. Family farms are a much more relaxed environment and you will get chances to try fun things with them like horse ridding, rides in helicopters ect.

Prior to bringing in backpackers to do the picking of fruit farmers had to compete for good workers and there were Australian professional pickers who used to go on the harvest trail. Most of the work was done piece rate and things were great . As soon as the backpacker and Pacific Island scheme came into play things went downhill fast . Especially when the shonky contractors turned up in masse.Piece rates went down because there was a glut of workers willing to work for less .Things started to resemble working for shite New Zealand farmers with the low pay rates .The farmers want an hourly rate of $25 an hour because they think they can pay workers $1 for $1.50 or more worth of labor .I say this because the rule of thumb is a good piece rate worker should make 50% more than an hourly worker , So if the award rate is $25 an hour a good picker should make at least $37-$40 an hour. Farmers hate it when they see you making this type of money even if you do the work .But they always piss and moan for more Govt hand outs and grants .You want to avoid shit towns like Leeton with the worst rates for oranges as is the little piss ant place called Tooleybuc .Never work on farms from Swan Hill ,Robinvale to Mildurra. Generally farmers are a shit lot . Never feel sorry for a farmer. They will lie , underpay you, poison you and do anything to get their crop off .I got ripped off to the tune of $4500 by a farmer in Orange NSW.The only thing worse are the shonky contractors or labor hire outfits

You may work as an employee or subcontractor or cash in hand. your working arrangement is a sham if you've paid below award rates. thank you so much for this video!!!! My brother has just come back from australia where he did a lot of fruit picking jobs and he has now come back hating australia because of it. He had no idea how awful and unfair it was until he was already doing it. luckily he had his own van to sleep in, but he never ever got paid what he was owed at any of his jobs, they don't weigh the fruit on front of you so they can scam you by saying you picked less than you did, on his day off he was told he had to work which he refused to do so he was fired and they didn't pay him for that last week of work. He worked on 5 fruit farms and they were all the same, just don't do it! Never stay in a working hostel because their "rent" will increase with your earning!!!

man, we were treated like shit in New Zealand, and really well. So it depends on the contractor, the best you can do is that if you are working legally, is to know your rights. These fuckers will try to squeeze every singlle last drop of sweat of you, so you have to be careful. make sure you let them know you know your rights. the single most trick is that they will pay you what you picked even when it is less than minimum wage and that is totally ilegal in Australia and New Zeland. They will tell you you signed a contract which is bullshit because a contract cannot be above the National Law. and if the contract says so, then it renders it invalid! so know your rights. RIGHT DOWN how many ours you put in every day and if at the end of the week they pay you less. COMPLAIN and file a report or call labour department. They will instantly give you what's yours as they don't want to be blacklisted by the authorities.

The pay is pretty average (paid per row), but I work on average 7 hours a day with a smoko and a lunch break included. Also The supervisors/bosses are very good to us. It's hard work for not a lot of pay (unless you are quick) but a good option if you are to do work with a fruit company. Not much money for extras but you could definitely live off it and get your second visa.

Hello Psychotraveller, can I ask which time of year you first came to Australia, and what the opportunities were like when you got there? I plan to start down in Adelaide and travel up to Cairns, but understand its winter now. Is it really going to be cold, or less jobs/attractions available? I'm also from the UK.

If you want almost guaranteed farm work at any time of year, I did mine in Tully, northern Queensland on a banana plantation. If you stay at the Banana barracks hostel (also known as Rafters), they will arrange a job for you at any one of the farms they are in contact with. Sometimes life there seems a bit grim, but it is a genuine deal, and the farmers will sign you off for the visa. The money is better than expected too.

I remember years ago i was working with some backpackers from England, we were picking grapes into the normal size 20lt bucket, after about 4 hours it was smoko time and we were sitting around sharing how many we picked, with nearly all of us picked around 60 buckets or something i dont remember exactly, but one UK girl gasped and she said how did you guys pick all them ive been working so hard but i havent filled my first bucket, so we went and had a look.. the Poor girl spent all morning not picking grapes by the bunches, but picking grapes individually off each bunch as it hung from the vine ..so she had a half bucket of individual grapes...!!.. i shouldnt Laugh but LOL.. So if you pick grapes make sure you pick a complete bunch form the vine.:)

Unfortunately this is not uncommon. Google migrant workers underpaid Australia and you'll see what I mean. The fact that Australia has a migrant worker task force and has recently introduced a modern slavery act should give some indication of the size of the problem of migrant worker exploitation. Travelling to Australia on a work visa puts migrant workers at serious risk of being exploited and underpaid. A recent study showed at least a third of all migrant workers in Australia in 2018 were getting paid less than half the minimum wage. Let that sink in. Why even bother with Australia if there is such a high chance of being ripped off? Go on a working holiday in another country instead.

make sure you sign a working contract and they pay taxes.. they have to pay you minimum even if you make less than minimum. it s the LAW!. if they consider you are not up-to speed, they must fire you but pay you whatever you worked for, minimum wage for whatever hours you did. that's why you need to keep track of how many hours and bins you have done every day. don't be afraid. just make sure they know you konw the law

the biggest thing to look for is that they pay your income tax. meaning they withheld a percentage of your pay as income tax and has registered you with the tax office as an employee. this means they cannot do anything illegal and you are protected by Australian law and has compulsory workplace insurance. do not think that a higher pay offer without tax payment (working illegally) is worth it as Australia has a tax free threshold that you're unlikely to reach working just a few months in a year in the country, so any tax you pay will be refunded 100% at the end of the financial year, on top of that companies must pay all employees superannuation which foreigners can claim as a lump sum before leaving the country which is 9.5% of your pay before tax, even on minimum pay that's near $1000 superannuation for 3 months full time work, enough for a nice extension to your holiday or an entire week in Fiji or somewhere else on your way back home.

if you have a work visa you are protected under Australian laws, they must pay you the appropriate wages, not allow to provide misleading information and must deal in "good faith". these fruit picking scammers are operating illegally and there are systems and services you can go to to deal with them. and they must legally sign the forms. edit: also a note - in Australia, companies must pay their employees superannuation which for most Australians is released to them when they retire, for foreigners you need to claim it before you leave, most backpackers forget to claim this before they leave the country, the super is 9.5% of your pay. so for few months work that's average about $1000-2000.

stupid of them, since unless they earn more than about $18k which is unlikely for 12 weeks work they are under the tax free threshold, so at the end they get all their tax refunded in cash along with their superannuation. or they can just ask the employer to provide the "intention to declare tax free threshold" which means they intend to not earn more than $18k so the employer does not withhold any tax from their pay. employers who hire them and pay in cash is only trying to pay less than they would with tax and superannuation.
