Fruit Fly Culture Care Sheet

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This video explains and demonstrates the set up and provides a care sheet for creating and maintaining a culture of the two popular species of fruit flies that are regularly available for the small animal hobbies, Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei. Along with crickets these are the most important feeders in the pet bug and small animal hobbies. This video is long overdue as I've been answering questions about cultures of these for decades. I greatly appreciate your questions or comments, and if you have any experiences or tips for working with them please share them for the benefit of all!

    I got 2 ghosts from you a week ago along with some hydei. They were sent to my office so I decided to feed them when no one was around. No one is a fan of my bug obsession here.. Well, in my excitement to watch the ghosts eat, I forgot to close the lid of the fruit fly cup... I looked over eventually and saw about 30 crawling all over my desk. 😱😱😱

    Great video. You make it so sound simple. I am the worlds worst FF culturer. Here is my story- 1. Buy culture 2. Harvest a boat load from original culture while setting up another culture. 3. Watch the new culture for a few weeks without seeing any pupae. Grrrr. I think I will try your trick of moistening the media with a little water. THANKS!

  • @bugsincyberspace

    @bugsincyberspace

    Thanks for commenting, Wally! I suspect you will find your results are much improved through keeping the substrate slightly moist in those critical first weeks. Any added water should be absorbed by the media within about a minute's time. If it looks bone dry, or nearly so the next day, consider adding more water. As the larvae hatch from eggs and begin to establish, the addition of water becomes less critical. Through their movements and production of waste, the culture tends to remain moist from then on and to a point where I never seem to need to add water again.

  • @bugsincyberspace

    @bugsincyberspace

    Most people set up an entirely new container and just seed it with (only) flies from the old culture. You can do it as you describe and sometimes I do, but it's really best to start fresh to make sure no mites took up residence in the new culture and get transferred to the old or that you aren't inoculating the new media with mold spores, etc.

  • @bugsincyberspace

    @bugsincyberspace

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Dane and thanks for the order and question! Yep, room temperature is just fine although you might find that reproduction happens more quickly in the mid-70's to around 80 degrees. Be careful not to leave it in a window though. Temps can heat up in a closed up container very quickly and kill the flies.

    The video explains that you can prolong the lives of the flies both as pupae and as adults by keeping them in the fridge, off and on. For people who use flies as feeders for their carnivorous pets this is a very useful thing. For people that don't have carnivorous pets, there isn't much reason to keep flies in the fridge. ;)

    Great questions, TRP! It is probably best to get the culture about a week before you actually "need" it because then it will start to reproduce in larger numbers vs a newly set up culture. However if you are only going to have one mantis, there are enough flies to last it through a week or two. You simply keep the media in the bottom of the fruit fly culture a bit moist. I put a teaspoon or so of water in, maybe two, and rotate it around the bottom of the container so that it soaks in evenly. All water is generally absorbed within a few moments as the media re-hydrates. I have one culture now as of 7/2 that is reproducing still and I made and dated it on my friend's birthday, 3/22. Generally they last about 6 weeks before I like to replace them although for many pet mantises that are acquired at around L2/L3 that is around the same time they will be coming out of the fruit fly stage anyway and moving on to larger foods. I do also have a mantis care sheet on my website, and talk about their care in the videos of my KZread Q&A playlist.

    It sounds trickier than it is. Basically, if you don't have too much ventilation and you are using a moderately moist substrate at the bottom, the humidity will be higher than your home is outside the tank/container. We also hydrate the mantises with a misting bottle, spraying droplets near them for them to drink. These points, along with the juicy prey mantises eat will help to keep them hydrates but that tank humidity is important especially when they are molting.
