    The City Must Survive. That quote from the intro has stayed with me for quite some time. It's so loaded with meaning, passion, desperation, hope. The City has become more than a city, it has become the human race itself, it has become greater than any individual life. It is the future, the children, your hopes and dreams and memories and nightmares. It is Existence. The City Must Survive.

    The actual temperature in the houses was about -50 or (on hard) -70, though...15/17 minus 6 heat levels from generator and 4 from insulation. That's actually survivable with really warm clothing (which New Londoners have). At least for a little while. Assuming that you had overdrive turned on and max research for heat-related things, of course.

  • @metalosaur

    @metalosaur

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@marcusc9931 I am living in a place where -50 in a winter is called fine. Wind is air movement, it is warmth by itself, absence of wind is the real foreshadow of the true frost. P.S. Also it is impossible to warm up while sitting in a pit. All the warmth will go up and all the cold air from around will be condensing in a pit (windless pits in Antarctica are the coldest places on Earth). The visual design of this game is looking great but while playing it I've been sometimes thinking that guys who made the city plan wanted to kill all the citizens.

  • @davidprice8449

    @davidprice8449

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@metalosaur I've heard its because the generator isn't a heat dispenser but a heat CANNON, pushing hot air upwards to keep the cold air from being able to go down into it, basically directly fighting the weather to keep it out of the pit rather than heating the pit itself

    This theme alone makes the first scenario beat the others in every possible way. That final moment before the dawn where even overdrive on max power cannot keep you above freezing, when hope has plummeted to a sliver (if you did not cross the line into the purpose capstones). The height to which everyone will raise their middle fingers to mother nature once even apocalypse has nothing on us. Compared to that, class warfare or choosing between what's right and what's needed... nothing stops it.

    *Fun little summary of my latest playthrough* "Alright everyone, here it is" *The Captain speaks to the crowd at the foot of their mighty protector, the New London Generator. We've seen it coming for some days. The refugees have shared their tales of horror. I'll be honest...I don't know if we can make it. But we have to try. Our engineers have applied every possible improvement they can to this machine." *He points to the Generator.* "The hunters say we've got stocks of food to last a few months. Hopefully this storm won't last that long!" *A meager cheer from a few of the people rises from the crowd.* "I know everyone has had their complaints, even when we took in everyone the scouts found. And I won't mince words...some of us will likely die." *A hushed murmur and a few sobs can be heard over the biting wind above the crater.* "The city must survive! Everyone! Stay warm, and godspeed!" **Three brutally cold, worsening days later.** "Captain!" *An engineer runs into the Captain's office.* "The mines...the hydraulics are freezing over! What in God's name do we do?" *The Captain looks up from a concerning report about fuel reserves.* "Are the Automatons working the mines?" *The engineer shakes his head* "No, and it wouldn't help either way, we've got them on the piles from the fracking pumps. You said yourself, the risk of frostbite or death was too high." *The Captain thinks for a moment.* "Alright, this is a hard choice, but we've got no choice...those mines hold everyone's lives in their shafts. We need to send people in to try and prop up the tunnels." *The engineer looks aghast* "Sir, people will die in there..." "I know, that's why I want you to find volunteers. I'll not force anyone to do something so dangerous." **A day later. Temperture drops to nearly -100 C, and the engineer returns.** "Captain, we've lost 30 lads...all thirty brave men who volunteered." *The Captain holds his head in his hands.* "And the mines?" "Intact!" "Those men are heroes, if we survive this, I'll make sure they're remembered forever..." **Two more days. -150C...no home can be warmed by the generator.** "Everyone! I know, I know, the only places left to find warmth is here and in the hospitals. But, I've hopeful news...A couple of engineers in coordination with the previous scout teams have figured out that we're in the tailend of this Storm! We've only got to hold out a day or two more. You all know I've asked the hardest thing any man can ask of forty-three of our sons...and so I'm going to say only this: Collect what wood, coal, and food you need from the stockpiles, then return to your homes. Hold your loved ones dear, your neighbors too. And pray we see the Sun again. The city must survive!" *The Captain returns to his own family, hugs his wife and children, cold tears streaming down his wool wrapped face. He's afraid...as is everyone else. But hope is hard to kill...and he knows the people have hope.** **Two days later, when the temperture has sunk to -170C, fuel is low, food low. Dozens are suffering from frostbite, scores are sick. The doctors, the only people still working are at the point of breaking with more people than they can handle** "Captain! CAPTAIN!" *One of the former scouts hobbles over to him, his foot lost to the frozen world.* "Yes?" "The Storm...it's ending! We made it!" *The Captain takes his glasses and hat off...and sobs.* "Sir!?" "I'm overwelmed...I was so afraid we would sputter and die. Eighty of us, starving and cold...And now here we are...over six hundred strong...and still cold...but alive. Faith my friend...faith kept us alive." "I won't lie sir, turning no one away stressed our resources, but...it was the right thing to do." "I know. I know I've made some hard choices...your foot is one of those choices, but I know I can look at myself in a mirror." "Less can be said of a man...well in a few hours we should be seeing sunlight...and before I came in here, you could actually feel the air warming! Those poor souls who wandered into the Storm after leaving us their notes could be right! God I hope they are..." *New London. 647 Survivors. -30C*

    First playthrough, playing on the default medium difficulty. accepted all refugees, managed to keep all my people alive, healthy and the generator fueled by the skin of my teeth. Juuuust managed to get everything sort-of stable when news of the storm hits. I scramble to gather supplies and turn the tent-shanties of the refugees into proper houses before the storm hits. I barely succeed. I have enough food for 4 days. Enough fuel for six. I have no idea what's coming. The peak of the storm hit just when my food reached zero. The generator's stress hits 100%. Oh hell. A child volunteers to crawl between the linkages and release an emergency pressure valv.e One life vs 640. I give the go ahead as the city begins freezing despite the generator going at it full blast. I had no idea if all the pain and sacrifices made were enough. All the toil and tenacity, living on soup, imprisoning "malcontents" to keep panic from spreading, was it all in vain? And then the storm broke. -150 to -30 in an hour. I stare numbly at the temperature display as I disengage the overdrive and throttle the generator to Heat Level 2. We made it.

    This theme got me so amped during the storm just watching the hope fall and everything quickly having to be shut down. I had alot of coal and food ready, and almost ran out at the end as everything essentially froze just automatons on coal mines, kilns, tree wall things and throwing people into the coal piles just barely made it as i had like 2 seconds before either the gen exploded or ran out of coal.

    you can survive the first days if you have maxed out houseswith insolation with only steam power 4 and not wasting the overdrive, problem here is the coal to keep it hot enough but its possible to not freeze with maxed out houses for the first few days and after you go for overcharge.

    I just finished my first playthrough... Last two hours; everybody is forced to eat what little remains of the Raw Food storage, the Generator is shutting down as the coal runs out, more than half the surviving population is sick and dropping like flies, every single message I get is about people giving up on life and refusing to work, Discontent is utterly unstoppable no matter what Faith abilities I use, every building is either shut down or too deadly to work in, Coal Kilns have eaten my entire supply of wood making it impossible to build or do research and meanwhile this music is blaring with the frigid wind, telling me that if I make even ONE mistake, everyone will die in a heartbeat. But then, out of nowhere, the father returns with his missing daughter. An impossible omen that lifted me- and the entire city it seemed like- and got me through those last two hours, to the dawn. I haven't had a gaming experience like this in a VERY long time... ;____;

    on my first play-through, being an avid city builder, my friends encouraged me to do it head first on hard, i had the best intentions but had no experience. people were dying to hunger, to cold, to disease, i was short on every resource and my city was a disgusting unorganized patchwork of emergency fixes and response to crisis after crisis, i thought i had failed my people as a leader towards the end of the storm, nothing was working, i had to shutdown heat and sacrifice the outer edges residents to preserve the core. i lost over 90 people one night and i couldnt do anything to help them. they were frozen to death in their homes hiding in their closets and under their bed, i had to send kids into the furnace to fix the generator, then the storm cleared up and people came out into the streets with renewed hope for the future. i was all choked up. i did horrible things, but over 370 people survived

    When your generator is running so hot your overdrive is teetering between shutdowns and that mechanic is the only reason your still even alive. Half your people cant work, a quarter of them are amputees. The loudspeaker guy tells them to "wrap up warm, it's cold outside" 'cus that is an understatement. You sit, carefully coming to the conclusion that triage is the ONLY way you make it out, you press the button, 60 people lose their lives. Mines are freezing, engineers are chilly, kids are weak, the sick are heavy. He's frozen in his house already, Mom's spaghetti.

    I was not well prepared. I had no clue what was coming, was playin through blind, and was barely scrambling to maintain basic necessities. Food was not a concern, thankfully, but i vastly overestimated my coal stockpiles. I had only 3 automatons with no spare steam cores. Went in with 7000. Had to turn off the generator for half a day as well as turn off any nonessential building. Forced 24 hour shifts with foremen on every coal resource. 600 went in. 100 died, another 250 sick and gravely injured. But I made it... with 88 coal remaining. enough to power the steam engines for 10 minutes. This music perfectly encapsulated that mindset.

    Even without owning it I can safely say Frostpunk is such an amazing game. The concept and gameplay are great, but man.. music like this drives home every other amazing thing about Frostpunk. Songs like this convey everything Frostpunk is about. A struggle for survival. Seemingly insurmountable hardships. Fragile hope on a far horizon. But when you listen to songs like these you just know that you have to make it. Whatever it takes. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for good music.

    Benmaks any temperature colder than -273.15 Celsius is physically impossible. It is zero at the kelvin scale, the temperature at which the thermal energy content of matter is absolute nil and all particle movement stops. It remains unclear whether it is even possible to achieve absolute zero. Matter sufficiently close to absolute zero may undergo a reversible collapse into a Bose-Einstein condensate, with all particles occupying the same quantum state. To put simply, there's no where left to "go" below -273.15 Celsius.

    So surprised how good this game is. Preordered once I saw some trailers and I had a hunch it would. Also helps that the same guys are behind This War of Mine. Managed to only lose 2 guys, one to a tragic patrol and one seemed to just automatically die as soon as the doomsayer reached my town. Thought I had it all figured out. "How bad can it be?". It was bad. -120C, workstations barely above cold, pushing extended hours just to keep folks out of their freezing homes. Generator, hubs, heaters, all maxed in efficiency and power, running nonstop but it wasn't enough. People panicking and refusing to do anything out of terror, others praying for a merciful end while I'm running around, juggling with the generator overdrive and infirmary staff, guardsmen attempting to enforce what little order is left on the streets. "Surely I got this, juggling this overdrive and hoping enough people stay healthy and get healed in the infirmaries!" WRONG MY MAN -130C -140C -150C GODDAMN. People simply gave up and it looked like absolutely everyone sat at home, awaiting death. Sicknesses and grave injuries piling up as the last hours were closing. I was just staring at the paralyzed town, eyeballing the sickness counter and listening to the generator groan in agony as overdrive was shaking it apart. And it finally came, the storm fucking ended! PRAISE THE SUN IF ONLY I COULD BE SO INCANDESCENT What a rollercoaster of a game.
