Frostgrave Solo - Episode 0

I'm starting up a new Frostgrave Solo campaign to introduce new players to the game. In this first video, I'll go over creating my wizard and apprentice as well as selecting my soldiers and spells.

The reload action for a crossbowman can be used in place of the otherwise required move action. See page 34: "If a figure wishes, it may replace its movement action with a 'reload' action." So if you don't move, you can shoot and reload in a single turn. IME, the benefit from the extra damage is often more valuable than the ability to shoot and move every turn, since crossbowmen can often be set in an overwatch position and not move for several turns at a time.

Thanks for this, I've been on the fence about getting into this one for a while. Looking forward to the next video, I'm thinking that'll be the deciding factor.

I'm not super close to Bournemouth (Andover) but I sometimes am down at Entoyment in Poole for events. Would be happy to tack a Frostgrave game on sometime!

@MrBennyOwens hi, and thank you for your kind offer. I still haven't played my first game yet. I'm old 65, and no one I know plays any games. I just get strange looks if I ask. I'm dyslexic so have huge problem with mathematics so that's another thing about being solo I could take my time for doing the maths. If uou still want to meet let me know.

Hey Jim, with Warband creation - you can have up to 8 soldiers in your warband and, of those - no more than 4 may be specialists from how the rules are written if I'm correct

Yep... that's how I did it. Four archers and four thugs.

Just wanted to touch base on that subject so new players knew that they could mix it up a bit and not feel like they had to have 4x specialists right from the get go. When I make a starting Warband, I tend to only have 1x specialist and then invest in more as my crew gains experience and of course funds

I lean towards Frostgrave because I can find more players. Stargrave is definitely fun, but more deadly (IMO) due to the ranged weapons.

Are Frostgrave and Five Leagues from the Boarderlands comparable to each other? Which one is the best?

The only really similarity is that they're both fantasy games. FG is primarily versus, has a warband size of around 10, and is based on unique scenarios. 5L is a solo game, has a warband size of around 5, and is randomly generated from tables you roll on. I don't think it's a matter of which is better, it all comes down to taste.

@@BetaRayBill32 thanks for the explanation. I got 5L few months ago and I have plans to play it. However, as soon I saw Frostgrave Solo, I thought it could be a better option. Perhaps, I should try both. 😅 I just need to find time.
