That’s terrible seeing that crop destroyed and the work that goes into growing the potatoes, the sheridans are neighbors of ours and I know how hard those men work and the investment in equipment and storage

Totally Devastating to see this situation for the Finnigans & all the growers, the hard work that goes in initially in a normal year is thought going without this happening. The rain has caused outrageous damage to all the farmers who grow fantastic produce. Totally understand the work & pain you guys are going through to salvage what you can. Sad to watch but people need to see what’s really happening to get food on the shelves & this video does exactly that.

Please Paul and Andrew I can get that smell , anyone who has a heart would feel your pain and frustration with conditions Is it climate change or is it that arable farming in Ireland is becoming impossible and will have little only grass land Last week I was in the heart of Victoria Australia spud growing country Wallace near Ballarat and farmers dealing with drought conditions but can irrigate I don’t have the answer but wish you well for the future ☘️☘️🍀🍀🇮🇪🇦🇺

Does the rotten potatoes have much affect if they don't rot fully before next sowing season and is there any fertilizer value for the ground. I think no matter what type of farming someone is in, this weather is hard to cope with. Great insight to the spud side of things

Would the land be too de-stoned after all the years leaving nothing but clay fines, which has no chance of draining when wet?

OMG Paul, that is a terrible situation for you and the business to deal with. I had similar in 1998, on only 20 acres, we made the mistake of lifting too early. Best to leave it as late as possible before trying to salvage what is there. The potato crop is a high risk sector, the weather patterns are adding to that risk. Will you adjust your policy.

It’s very disheartening to watch the loss of crop and also very worrisome what could happen with all crops due to bad weather not to mention the financial loss to ye and your fellow farmers. Hope the sun shines soon 🤞.

You'd nearly be quicker hand picking in the field. At least you know you had a box of good potatoes rather than sorting through 10 boxes of muck. Loads of kids with two weeks off school for Easter. Whether they pick spuds over the PlayStation is another matter.
