Frontline fighting: Russia advancing in shock offensive north of Kharkiv | BBC News
Russian forces have been gaining ground in their most significant advance in Ukraine for many months.
Troops crossed the border from Russia, north of Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv, seizing territory in a surprise new offensive.
It follows months of largely static fighting over defensive positions in the east and south of Ukraine, where Russia has held territory occupied since its invasion in 2022.
Ukrainian forces appear to have been caught by surprise by the opening of the new front north of Kharkiv. Thousands of civilians are fleeing the area. The Russian advance could directly threaten Kharkiv if its forces reach artillery range of the city.

The reality is that Russia is one of the world’s military superpowers. Ukraine is a little ant in the road that is being feed by the West. Russia can win just by brut force. How long that will take who knows. Ukraine can only try to defend what land it has. It needs to negotiate a peace treaty with Russia and stop this senseless killing. Ukraine is starting to run out of young men to fight the war. Asking men that left Ukraine to come back to fight and die is a sign of desperation. No one wants Russia to win but it won from day one of the war. Ukraine should have negotiated the land that Russia wanted and get over it.

@theordinaryamerican Russia had its small Syrian compane for two and a half years. USA were in Afganistan and Iraq for 20 years. Let's discuss the real results of this compane in a few years time. In a ideal world negotiations might work. But there were also ready the Oslo accords between Russia and Ukraine, where Russia promised to never invade Ukraine. Putin broke that promise. How can Ukraine trust the word of a country that broke their promise to not invade before? If they negotiate now, how can they trust Russia to not change their mind in 5 or 10 years?

What supplies in the world? To put it in perspective, Russia has received more shells from North Korea than Ukraine has received from Germany. 2 years into the war, and Ukraine does not even have a single fighter aircraft. The last aid package was stuck in congress for 3 months, forcing Ukraine to cede Avdiivka.

You're right. After 2 years of fighting, Russia has advanced about 7 km and captured Avdiivka, a town of 30,000 pre war population. Remind me, how many kilometres did the Russians run away when they lost against the Ukrainian offensive in Kharkiv Oblast? How many kilometres did they lose from nearly taking Kyiv to being castrated in the north and never returning? 😂

Жест доброй воли после стамбульских переговоров, ожидалось что Украина подпишит мирный договор ( Российские войска просто ушли от Киева). Затем было Харьковское украинское наступление, боёв там особо не было, 1 город только 2 недели оборонялся потом дали русским уйти. Россия была не готова к такому повороту событий когда 20 на 1 го, и избежав сражения отвела свой экспедиционный корпус на подготовленные на границе позиции. ( Одни ушли, Другие пришли) Из под Херсона тоже вывели войска, для более удобной обороны( Одни ушли, Другие пришли) На войне территория не имеет ни какого смысла, важно кто выигрывает главные сражения, если уложить всю армию на границе, то всю оставшуюся часть страны некому уже защищать не будет, Россия просто отдала эти территории что бы не биться в невыгодных условиях. Все главные сражения Украиной проиграны, в изначально не выгодных местах, теперь либо 1е Россия начнёт забирать территории, либо 2е весь фронт рухнет, и Украина проиграет эту войну.

This summer will look like 1945. The troops swarming toward Kharkiv arent even regulars from the main Army Group North. They are a patchwork of Spetznaz, Storm-Z, Chechen etc units as can be seen by their patches. These are the "shock" units to "kick in the door". After them comes the reserves of regulars

Well if BBC is reporting this then the situation must be worse than expected. Sometime a year and a half ago, I’d mentioned that Russia always gets creamed at the beginning of a war. But if they manage to hang in there for long enough, they always come back much, much stronger. Think about it:- World war 2, they took a total beating in 1941. By 1942, they had moved production of war stores east of the urals, and by 1944 they were storming the Oder, by 1945 Masters of much of the European landmass. Again, the Finnish Winter War: A disaster. The continuation war: also a disaster but for Finland.

Don't forget Napoleon's invasion. After the Baradino battle the Russian army retreated and abandoned Moscow to the French, who thought they wad won the war. And when winter came....they hit back and drove the French back all the way to Paris.

Ukrainian General has openly admitted that they cant stop Russia from advancing in Kharkiv because they dont have troops even if they receive the promised weapons. There are no frontline troops, fortified trenches or mines to slow down Russian advances in Kharkiv. For BBc to admit that the situation is difficult means that its worse than projected. Blinken is meeting Zelensky in Kiev and nothing will change except US sends thousands of ground troops to fight in Ukraine which I dont see happening soon

I think the problem is Zelensky himself said that this was anticipated already. Hence at the very least, we should have expected a well defended area unless he is lying about it.

Most of the money is being sent straight back to NATO arms manufacturers, who then donate to politicians. It's a win-win arrangement. They profit, whatever the outcome.
