Front Runner Roof Rack and Ladder on Land Rover Discovery 4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I fit the Front Runner Roof Rack and Ladder to my Land Rover Discovery 4. But it wasn't easy! There were several issues that took hours to resolve. Despite researching lots of different roof racks for Land Rovers, I didn't come across any videos that warned me of the problems fitting the Front Runner. But now that I have overcome these issues, I love it.
So if you are thinking of getting this roof rack for your Discovery / LR3 / LR4, or any 4x4 for that matter, watch this video and hopefully you can avoid the problems I faced.
I was tempted by several other roof racks, like the Pro Speed and the Rhino, because they had great reviews and looked pretty good too. But in my opinion, the Front Runner looks the best.
I will be gradually modifying my Land Rover to take it on adventures with me, so Subscribe to my channel if you'd like to see more upgrades to the Discovery 4.
Also, I am not an expert (which should be obvious in the video), but if you have any questions about the roof rack, the rear ladder, or my experience fitting it, please comment below and I will do my best to answer.

    Thank you. Yes I do love the look and quality of these racks... and most importantly, all the accessories that are designed to work with it. The full rack did make a bit of noise, but the wind fairing helped a lot. The problem is, my new light bars meant I had to take that wind fairing off, so I had a special one made. I'll have a video for that hopefully uploaded soon.

    I fitted this a while back and found the ‘vibrating’ wind noise pretty crazy. I tried wrapping bungle cable at the front to break up the air (a bit better) and also lengthwise over and under to reduce vibration. That was ok too but vibration noise at about 50+ mph was crazy. In the end I bought their wind deflector, which wasn’t cheap and didn’t look as good in my opinion. It got rid of the noise issue though 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @inhistracks

    Hi Charlie. Yes the noise was very noticeable without the deflector. I just used the one that was supplied with the roof rack, which seemed to do a good job, but now I've fitted a light bar, I had to remove the wind deflector and I have wind noise coming from the light bar and the roof rack. I think I've overcome that with a simple custom built deflector, but above 70mph, it starts to get noisy. I'm going to dedicate a video to wind noise on the light bar. I too tried the bungee chord trick. Didn't have much luck either

Just fit it out with Strand lightbars and work-lights, which I'm quite happy with. I agree, the Front Runner gear is fantastic. The only thing I think people should be aware of when fitting roof racks and lights, is that the wind noise becomes more of an issue. When it was just the roof rack, it wasn't too bad, but now with the lights too, it gets quite noisy above 70mph.

    Hey Francis. So sorry for the delayed reply. I've been away a lot this month. The total length of the bolt appears to be 25mm, but the length of the threaded part is 20mm. I'm probably too late now, but the hardware store told me that the 10.9s might be a safer bet as they are less brittle than the 12.9s. Not sure whether that will make any difference, but if the 12.9s don't work out, give that a try.

    Oh man am I glad i ran into your video. I'm currently in this same predicament as we speak. Bolt snapped off and could not even drill it out to save my life. THANKS A MILLION!

  • @inhistracks

    @inhistracks

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey. Sorry for the slow reply. Yes just scrape away at the body filler around the thread that you screwed your bolt into and you'll see that it's an M6 thread inside an M10 bolt. The M10 bolt can be easily unscrewed from the roof, but this will leave the car vulnerable to the weather. Try any decent breaker's yard that have Discovery 3, 4, or 5, or an LR specialist for a spare mounting bolt. For the sealant, I used Sekaflex. Don't use a cheap silicone. It won't work. I left it overnight to set before fitting the roof rack into the new bolt, but a couple of hours would have probably been enough.

    I got mine from Avenger 4x4 in Peterborough. They didn't keep them in stock, they just happened to have some from another Discovery that was for spares and repairs. You could easily get them out of the roof of a scrap Disco, but finding a breakers yard that specialises in Land Rover Discoveries isn't easy. Yes, I'm pretty sure it's a 10mm on outside and 6mm threaded hole. The hole doesn't go all the way through, so the 6mm bit is water tight. You just have to seal the 10mm thread really well. I think Disco 3, 4 & 5 all have those same mounting bolts. Nobody seems to know what they are actually called so Mounting bolt might mean nothing to experts.
