    The adjustment measurements you are using is for total Toe, individual toe would use a slightly different process would it not? For individual wheel Toe measurement, would you not adjust to the one side with the steering wheel centered? Then adjust the other side?

  • @sixtyfiveford

    @sixtyfiveford

    Жыл бұрын

    @@chrish7336 Well the first problem is you don't know which side is out. It's easiest to set the correct measurement/ toe. Then if the wheel is not centered; you simply do opposite what you do one side to the other side. For example, half a turn on one side in and half a turn on the other side out. This will move the steering wheel without messing with the alignment that you set. Just do opposite on each side until the steering wheel is where you want it to be. You will need to drive it in between but you don't have to measure it again.

    @@sixtyfiveford I guess that would accomplish the same thing. Will have to keep that in mind, I figured I would center the wheel then Adjust the 1 wheel within limits and then do the same on the other (using angle calculations). This process may make it a little simpler. Thanks for the info.

    Props to this guy for factoring in the track width of the front and rear of a vehicle. Before you even start aligning you should check this specification of your vehicle. Without this information everything will be off and you will be just wasting your time. A lot of "the right way" alignment videos out there do not even mention this. Again, hats off to Sixtyfiveford !!! God bless.

    Setup is simpler than you're making it. After initially setting the parallel, don't move anything until you know all the details. (1) Set your two parallel lines by measuring the distance between the lines in front and behind to make them equal. (2) Measure the gap on the left plus the right of the front axle (at center hub) and divide the sum in half. (3) Measure the gap on the left plus the right of the rear axle (at center hub) and divide the sum in half. (4) Then adjust each string on sides so the front is the distance calculated in step #2 and the rear value in step #3. (5) As a verification that you now have two parallel lines, measure the distance between the lines in front and behind the vehicle. If those are the same, you're all set. KISS (Keep It Super Simple)

    Thanks for a great video. My 99 Taurus front end was a wore out mess, I rebuilt everything, replaced tie rod ends (inner and outer), and foolishly assumed the settings would be normal with new parts (shock mount plates were spot welded in place). Well, after only 6 months my front tires were worn out, the car pulled left, steering wheel was off center, and the drivers side tire was wearing out the OUTER edge (opposite of most Taurus's). The passenger side tire wore evenly, but was shot also. Fortunately, the rear tires still look brand new, so no problem with the rear alignment. Anyway, toed in the left tire to counter pull, wore out 2 tires in 2 months! So I drilled out the camber plate on the driver's side shock tower, got rid of the positive camber, then used your method. Turns out the tires were toed in by 1/2 to 3/4 inch (each Side!), way too much, so now I know why the car was eating front tires. THANK YOU, you saved my sanity (and a fair amount of money), I set them to zero toe in, and a noise that sounded like a brake pad wear indicator, chirping every time I turned right, has disappeared, something that had been driving me nuts since my rebuild about a year ago. I finally know what was going on, which is a relief. The car was treacherous to drive in rainy weather, unstable and constantly hydroplaning before my alignment. So, I'm hoping that is resolved, and I'm confident that will be the case. Great video, good job, well done.

    Thanks for the video! Explained DIY home alignment really well. The 2 x 4's make set up real fast. I'd used the car jack method before but getting the stringlines perfectly aligned and parallel was a chore. With the preset wood, I can now set up and check my alignment in about 20 minutes at most. I can easily and repeatedly set up the nail positions correctly relative to the car, now knowing the distance from the front and rear wheel centers to each string line. I did find that the rear wheels/axle on my Mustang were 6mm out of parallel with the front, ex-factory! Putting on adjustable rear Lower Control Arms, I was able to fix that, then get a perfect alignment.

    Speaking from experience as a master tech who went to a large chain tire shop. They maximize profit by having inexperienced general service (lube & tire) techs do the alignments. Most managers believe all you need to know is on the screen and that if the angles are in the green it is good. I actually got into an argument with one manager and told him "I can make everything green and it will pull so hard you won't be able to hold the wheel. Or everything red and it will track straight while chewing the tires off."

    I just used this method. Worked great. My car has to be raised to make the toe adjustment which means I have to setup and adjust the strings each time. I did it three times. Three of my car's wheels were good and I got consistent, repeatable, measurements across each of those three separate string set ups. The one wheel that needed adjustment showed the expected change after each adjustment. I did this after installing new tie rod end on both sides.

    finally someone who makes sence. I never understood why people always use the string method and measure the same distance from the front hub to the string as the rear hub to the wheel. Both axles may have a different width so it makes no sence to me. But I don't agree on the "toe out" part, but that's a matter of preference.

  • @hotrodtrucker88

    on an old f series Ford truck you have to go by the distance between the rear jak stands and the front jack stands, because one front wheel sticks out a little more than the other from the factory , most people don't realize that. so , you can't measure from the center of the front wheels and they both be the same they won't be.

My wife bought it in 98 and it is now clocking just under 300k and the 5 speed allows amazing gas mileage. 48mpg is the best I've ever done for a few hundred miles. The speed limits in my state are all 70mph -80mph on freeways so that kills some mpg(pisses people off if you go slower), but I still manage high 30's on a regular basis. Rust has just recently started to show in a few minor areas so I still got some time to get to 400k. You must live in the New England States?

    You're assuming that both front and rear axles are perfectly centered under the vehicle. If they are, then great, but if you have a lifted Jeep with solid axles, the axles will shift the more you lift it. Even if you correct it and recenter the axles, no one can guarantee that they are centered precisely enough for this alignment method to be accurate enough. I think measuring the difference between front and rear of the front tires will be more reliable.

    This method ASSUMES that the rims are perfectly true and are not out of round or bent in ANY way. As a mechanic who has been aligning cars for 40 years it's common to find car rims that are not true. If you are going to use this method, mark one of the rims at the 12:00 position. Record your toe. Roll the car until the mark is in the 6:00 position and then reset your strings and take another toe measurement. If it's not exactly the same reading then you can't really set the toe accurately. Of course non of this matters if the camber is not set first.

  • @kuhrd

    @kuhrd

    7 жыл бұрын

    One thing I check first is if the rims are true with the hub using a dial indicator. Even a cheap dial indicator will work well enough to tell if your rim is true to the hub. All you have to do is spin the tire and you will quickly be able to tell if the rim is straight. Definitely, something to check though before going through all the work of aligning just to find out that the rim is bent.

Center the steering wheel turning it fully left counting the TURNS and then full right counting turns. Stop at the middle, centering the steering wheel. Get OTC steering wheel holder or have someone hold it. JEG has a toe-bar. Get a caster-camber gauge and appropriate tools. Check the tires for bumps while rotating it to check for out-of- round. I may be missing something, but it seems as though you don't really need to have the line in the back of the vehicle. Just put a long 2x4 or whatever in back, then butt and square your jack stands up against it so when you move the line of the string in or out, it wont pull the stand on the opposite side....No? Just make sure you have some weight on the 2x4 so it wont move when you slide the jacks in or out when adjusting your distances from the center of the hub. =)

    Thanks for making this video. I just tried doing this with a laser level but I didn’t account for the front and rear axel widths potentially being different. My alignment seems to have turned out well, but I’ll use this method next time.

    I measure distance between rims, front and back. Seems to work for toe.

  • @garyr7027
    @garyr70275 жыл бұрын

    If rear toe is non adjustable on a vehicle and you know it's right, that string can be measured off the back and front on the rear rim, string adjustment is made by moving the string from the front of the vehical until the string is straight with the back rim. That'll give you a straight string for the front wheel to be measured off of. Can't really measure just off the center of the back wheel, cause you still can't know if the string is straight with the rims. The string has to be measured off 4 points, 2 off the back wheel and 2 off the front wheel. String should be really tight so it doesn't shift, the thinner the string the more precise measurement.

    Yesterday, I tried the sting method to see if it would really indicate something close for toein/toeout. I think the rotor throw me off because I took to a alignment shop and had it checked :) It was right on the money all along but I thought it was off because the right front tire was wearing on the outside thread. *suspension parts were all good Watched your vid a few times to confirm info. You talked about the difference between the front and the back tracking distance. Not sure how the calipers would change the difference but I like rotor idea difference in thickness. Got the string set up and I set it at 1 inch both rears to the rim. (rim front/back) The front left is at 1 3/8 to the rim (rim front/back) The front right is wacky 1 inch (rim front/back) Picked another point on the rim. just inside the lip of the rim and I get 1 3/8. So, it has to be the thickness of the rotor? Your thoughts The reason for checking the string alignment was to see how close it would be to a actual shop alignment numbers. If I could get confidence in the string measurement. I need to do another jeep. :) Anyway, Thanks going into detail with your vid. esp explaining the tracking distance difference. Edit update. Ok, checked again with adjusting the string in the front. Front now shows 1 inch both tires front.

    You need to set up a perfectly square box around the vehicle. So the strings that protrude from the front and back of the vehicle are identical distances apart. Then you can start taking measurements and moving the box around to be positioned "square" with the vehicle.

    Thank you for the reply. final question. (about toe) Just curious.. How close do you think the string measurement to the actual shop alignment? 99% of the time..? 95%? I'll definitely make sure I take measurements front and back on the string line next time.. Thanks again for replying

    The common mistake people on KZread make is that it does not materr if your back axle is wider or narrower than the front axle. It's all relative. You will just be working with the string further away from the front wheel or closer to the front wheel. BACK AXLE WIDENESS DOES NOT MATTER IF ITS NOT THE SAME AS THE FRONT AXLE WIDTH IT'S ALL RELATIVE

    We had new General all-terain tires put on our 2002 Ford Explorer Limited 4 WD about a year ago with free alignment and I noticed right off that the truck didn't handle very well especially on the interstate at highway speeds. It wonders in the lane alot and you have to babysit the steering wheel. I thought it might just be the nature of these tires but after about 6 months I noticed the tread pattern on the front was getting feathered and wearing uneven. I've read that Ford Explorers have to be aligned a certain way but I wanted your opinion. I need a new alignment bad! Thanks for the video...

  • @sixtyfiveford

    +Jeff Stone More than likely the technician aligned it as an all wheel drive vehicle instead of a four wheel drive(big difference). So your front tires are toed out which causes excessive lane wondering. A four wheel drive vehicle should be toed in slightly.

  • @sixtyfiveford

    Very few cars can you actually adjust the camber. Caster though can be adjusted on some cars, though a lot you actually need to buy special hardware kits with eccentric bolts / washers to actually perform any sort of caster adjustment. Caster is as easy as putting a digital level vertically on the wheels.

    First thing I would check is worn out ball joints. This will affect camber which I don't discuss in the video. This is how straight up and down each tire is relative to the ground. You can check this pretty easily. -Park on perfectly level ground (you can pull one tire onto shims/blocks to achieve this). Check with carpenters level. -Take a straight edge off the rim from the bottom to the top(standing up) and measure how level it is. -You want to have a 0.5 - 1° of negative camber(tire top towards car center. This is more easily done with a digital angle gauge like these: amzn.to/3brByBK . But you can see severe out of tolerance with a simple carpenters level and generally get it very close.

    Most vehicles you can't adjust Caster and it's fixed from the factory. However Camber is adjustable on most vehicles, but not all. It generally involves special shims or adjusting eccentric cam bolts to move the top or bottom of the wheel in or out. This is as simple as putting a carpenters level on each rim vertically and making sure it's straight up and down level(make sure you're parked on a perfectly level horizontal spot).
