From Tree to Off Grid Cabin. Milling & Installing a Rustic Pine Floor

I could just go to the nearest box store and buy flooring. But why?! I have trees on the ground, waiting to be milled and shaped into something beautiful. So let's do that!
In this video, we take an old burnt tree, cut a log out of it, mill the log, cut the planks, rip and sand the boards, and finally...install stunning, rustic pine flooring! It's just that easy!
Well, it's actually not easy at all. But if it were easy, everyone would do it. And when everyone does anything, the charm and uniqueness gets lost. Not here! This floor is loaded with character and brimming with beauty. I bet you agree, as you watch the story of a cabin floor unfold before your eyes.
And an important design question: Would you or wouldn't you...? Oh, you need more information? Check out this awesome video!
Thanks for watching @LifeontheMoose !

Patrick, the wood look is a good look, once you paint you can't go back. I would wait awhile, see how the wood colours develop and then decide. Watching you each week is so relaxing, as they say, i love hard work, i could watch it for hours. 😂

Just received my "Happiness" Moose Merch t-shirt. Checked it over and found it was top notch quality and arrived quickly. Then some red stains on the front caught my eye. @@LifeontheMoose You might have interest in a YT channel recent submission of "Northwoodsman1" using a more portable mill with his chainsaw and a ladder. A center point emanating radial sunburst array of 2" light colored lodgepole pine over a darker stain background might look good over the door. Bookend for the loft railing.

Hi 👋 Patrick, good to be back on the job site with you. Don’t paint!! Live with it for a while. With the natural wood through out the cabin. Once you paint there’s no going back… at least not with a lot of hard work, just what you need is more hard work. Maybe a bit of Decor would be a way to start off the cabin. I know you don’t want to visually shrink the inside of the cabin and with paint that is a possibility 🤷‍♂️ I’m looking forward to seeing you again next week! Till then,You take care of yourself Patrick

When I was in high school/college I played T-Bone in a jazz band. We called our band "Saw". Our trumpet player also played football. During one of his games he got hit so hard that he lost his front teeth. I tell you this because I know first hand that missing teeth can severely affect the performance of a band saw. (Too much??? Sorry, I just thought you could use a good pun.) I just came in from working on my Train Room project. All the while I'm laboring I was thinking that it would be so nice to borrow your fast forward speed ability and get this chore over more quickly. I gotta say that it sure is neat to see you enjoy doing whatever comes your way. It gives me inspiration! Another excellent job done your way. If you are truly asking for guidance for paint or no paint...I suggest NO paint. I also understand that it's ultimately up to Karen (and you). Thanks again, see you next week.

Really nice flooring. Yes paint the wall, too much wood look. We have switched to using the red Rosen paper under floor, cheaper, doesn’t smell, stops the squeaks and thinner so no worries about overlapping. Try it sometime. We also usually run the floor on the short dimension perpendicular to the floor, gives the illusion the cabin is wider, just a design thought.

Thanks for the info! Couldn’t run the planks the other direction. Joists… I appreciate the comment! 🙏

The way I look on wood coatings is, if the wood is lovely do not stain, clear coat or oil, if the wood is bland, stain.

Stain it a light to medium gray. It will tie into all of the natural grey accents in the wood and won’t cover up its authentic beauty.

Rather than paint on a cabin wall I think doing the Shou Sugi Ban burn and color stain for the wall would be more authentic. Sever great videos on KZread for how to do it.

Thanks! I did consider that, but ultimately ruled against it. I appreciate you watching!

Definitely paint the wall. It will break up the too much wood look. But I suggest you wait till you have completely finished the walls and flooring to choose the color.

I would stain all the trim a translucent color . It's small cabin but you are gonna have a lot of trim . I feel that it would pop this way while keeping the wood look.

My trappers log cabin (Eastern white pine) I just used a colored (light blue stain-yes I still have the can with the mixture recipe) on the trim to break up the logs. really worked well.

I wouldn't want a painted accent wall, but maybe a white wash could look good?

Excellent as always! 👍 Snow looked cool! Great job done with flooring! 😉 Small things, usually, take a lot of time (don't ask, how I know).. Looking at the list, there will be multiple cabin videos, from this point.. And that's great, because I will wait for them.. About wall, from my perspective, leave it natural and do not paint, but for contrast - hang some pictures, paintings, small shelves, horse shoes, moose horns etc.. But can of paint leave for cities where everything is synthetic.. 😂

I would say paint the front wall. It will break it up nicely. Not sure which colour. I'll let you dedice ;-)
