From Tokina MACRO 100 F2.8D to Nikkor MC 105 2.8 S

My experience with going from the Tokina Tokina MACRO 100 F2.8D AT-X Pro to Nikkor MC 105 2.8 S sitting on a Nikon D4 and a Nikkor Z6ii respectively. I am not overly happy with the shooting experience on my Nikkor S lens. Both autofocus and manual focus leaves something to be desired. The technical image quality that comes out of the Nikkor lens however is outstanding!

My friend, I hope all is well with you, I have been anticipating a new video from you for a while now; your videos are both inspiring and informative, so don't give up, Thanks. I have the same Nikon macro lens by the way. Sadly, I must agree with your valid argument about the lens flaws, but the image quality once in focus is next to none.

This is useful information. Thanks! My wife and I use Nikon DLSRs, and she also has a Z6. (She is the much-more-experienced photographer, by far, the mentor who guided my path into serious shooting.) We are looking for every advantage while photograpghing moving, wild insects and other wee beasties at night. Low-light is a severe test of any AF system.

Thank you for sharing! I think it will take a little while before the mirrorless cameras will focus as good as the DSLRs. I can see that the Z9 and Z8 start to get there judging from reviews, but I think it will take a few more "rounds" of firmware updates before the Z6 gets there, unfortunately!

I’ve seen comparisons of the old Nikon manual focus AIS 105 2.8 micro lens on Nikon gear and the new Nikon Z what you have. The Bolkeh and the sharpness were indistinguishable between the two. That’s the lens I have and I put a dandelion chip on the back of the lens to communicate with my cameras. I also bought the 105 AFD micro and it goes to one to one whereas the other one needs an extension tube and it’s very sharp as well. You can get them either one of them for less than €200 for the AFD one I only paid I think C$200 for it I’ve also compared my lens to the lens, you own and camera shops and didn’t really see any difference and sharpness, although having VR on macro lens would be handy. The older model of AFS 105 micro has VR, but I don’t think it was as good lens as the one you own. Not to say it was a bad lens. It’s just not the best one Nikon has produced even though it’s newer. Enjoy your review as always. Regards Gerry.

I will echo ‘TomS’ comment here, Frederik! Tokina makes some underrated lenses, and seem to take a backseat to the Tams and the Siggys. I have had a few Tokina over the years, and had good luck with them. I did not own this macro lens. Only way to get better focusing than the D4/4s, is the D5 or D6, IMO. Macro Photography is not for everyone. I remember a few years back, and my grown daughter who has a wedding cake/ confectionary business, showed me some close up shots her wedding photographer friend took of snowflakes. We happened to have had a storm at that time. I went out and I shot and I shot, and I just about “threw” the camera and lens into the woods! 😯🙄 It was exasperating! I did get one or two so so shots, but not like the “Wedding Photographer?’ The ONLY Nikkor Micro lens I have had good luck with, is the AF-S 60 mm F2.8. That is a fine lens, and is the one Nikon recd’s to do slide and negative copying on the D850/780 DSLR’s. I know you “know’ about focus limiters and all that Frederik, but I have to wonder if your Camera/ Lens are running latest firmware? I am not familiar with the new Micro Nikkor S lens, but I have heard a lot of good reviews on it. You may have a bad/abused copy Frederik? i don't know? Yeah, my comment is all disjointed… 😣 Mirrorless “love the backgrounds,” and this is common thing. I will occasionally get “hunting” with my Z7, but by and large, it is not so bad. I think no AF is perfect, and even the most recent cameras and lenses from any brand, will still require some “manual focusing” overrides. My Z7 has latest firmware, and will pick up on our cats in window light, and nail it most every time. Not to say it is perfect, but I am suspecting something is amiss there with the lens, Frederik? Sorry you are having issues, and hope it gets worked out. Give ole’ Nikon support a call. Worth a try? Best! 👍✌🙏📷😊

Thank you for your always positive feedback George! Much appreciated! I think you have coined my issue down to: "ML loves the backgrounds". As I wrote to Tim in another post, I have been out this morning doing a bit of flower photography ( instagram.com/p/Cr-acyLI5jC/? ) and when focusing on a small branch in the foreground, I often found that the camera would focus to infinity. If I then manually pulled the focus to minimum and hit the BBAF, then the lens would (sometime) acquire focus. I get the impression it sometimes does not know if to hunt closer or further away and ends up making bad decisions! It is a bit strange, as the Z6ii has a pretty advanced AF system: "Hybrid phase-detection/contrast AF" as the manual says. Maybe the hybrid means I get 25% of each? 😄 Dunno, will investigate a bit more. Take care George!

i own both the tokina 100/f2.8 and sigma 105 f2.8. I most time use the tokina on my d850 for product photography cuz of 2 reasons, I manual focus all the time and using the focus ring is so easy to tweak to the minute detail of sharpness and second it's light and compact. My gripe with it is that CA which I only notice when shooting a backlit object. The sigma is noticeably sharper for landscape ( when it comes to macro/product, sharpness is irrelevant cuz you're in control of your light ) and it does not have CA but my gripe with it is it's weight and size, plus its got alot of electronics like you noted in the Nikkor MC.. For studio work and real estate video/photography, nothing beats manual focusing so all that AF hype don't move me..

I tested some different Nikon Z cameras in the store and every time I found some negative things about them which just work on my D850. Shows me I for myself was right in investing in cheaper, older DSLR gear and not yet upgrade to more modern systems like Nikon Z.

Good comment TomS. Mirrorless has its advantages, and can only improve down the road. My aging eyes love the EVF of my Z7, but I still love a good OVF like in my D500, or D700. It is a known entity that mirrorless cameras love ‘backgrounds.’ They can get confused. I very seldom have issues with my Z7, but NO AF system is perfect. Жыл бұрын

Hi Florin, thank you for your question. No, unfortunately I am not sure. I can only benchmark towards my D4 with the Tokina on, and the AF is clearly slower on the Z6ii/105MC. I use pinpoint focus, that may be some of the problem, but I also do that on the D4. Maybe I am blowing the difference out of proportions, but the D4 just focuses faster and better IMHO. Today the Z6ii/105MC would not grab on to a small branch in the foreground, but happily focused all the way to infinity. Only when I pulled the focal plane all the way back with manual focus and then hit the BB AF was the Z6ii/105MC able to focus on the small branch in the foreground. It is as if it cannot figure out whether to walk back or forth when it tries to grab focus.

@@frederikboving unfortunately i had this experience to. Pin point AF is base on contrast detection. It shold be the most precise focus tipe, especialy for macro. Is slow, but precise. Maybe on a Z9 is better, but there's a lot of money to put there. Hello Frederik. I have this lens but don’t use it much. Although flower season will be here soon in Denver. ( am in love with the 24-120 Z lens). I pulled it out and did update firmware to 1.10. I didn’t remember having any focusing issues. Played in the yard and did not get the hunting or the MF slowness you describe. Lower light in the house and it did take a touch longer to focus but not annoying at all. Using a Z6II. Firmware 1.5, back button focus, AF-C, Auto Area AF, FN1 button to use subject tracking even for a stationary object. Lens at Full not limited. Now i have old ears but I can just barely hear the focusing motor. Best Regards - Tim Edit: if I misunderstood what you were saying I'm going to blame my old ears and ask to be ignored> 😐

Thank you for sharing Tim! Funny how two photographers can have very different experiences with the same gear. The only difference I can spot is that I use pinpoint focus and not auto area. I am a control freak when it comes to where the lens focuses, so maybe there is something about pinpoint focus? I have been out this morning doing a bit of flower photography ( instagram.com/p/Cr-acyLI5jC/? ) and when focusing on a small branch in the foreground, I often found that the camera would focus to infinity. If I then manually pulled the focus to minimum and hit the BBAF, then the lens would (sometime) acquire focus.
