This is the pace bowler who took 5 wickets per match on average. I havent seen any other pacer like him. Bowlers like Ambrose averaged only 4 wickets per match. Waqar was 4.5 wickets per match. To give a perspective Waqar played 87 tests and took 373 wickets and Lillee played only 70 tests took almost as many as Waqar did- to be precise 355 wickets. 373-355=18 wickets. Waqar played 17 more tests than Lillee to take 18 wickets more than him. Richard Hadlee, Dale Steyn took 350 wickets in 69 matches and Denis Lillee took them in 70 matches. That shows that Dennis Lillee is from separate league.

All time. He took a further 79 wkts in SuperTests in 15 WSC Test matches, against the mighty West Indies & World XI's. A further 24 wkts in 4 Tests vs World XI in 1972. 103 wkts in all not accounted for. Had they, his official record would be: 89 Tests, 458 wkts, 29x 5 wkt & 9x 10 wkt hauls. Over 5 wkts a Test. Against the best sides World cricket has ever seen. He took 12/89 & 12/92 in 2 matches against the World XI. His Strike Rate against the mighty West Indies was 45 & in 1972, his Strike Rate against the World XI was 39.1! Who does that?! A point to remember is that Australia played the mighty West Indies every 2nd summer in Australia, hence Lillee's wkts are worth more, as nearly 1/3rd of his career, he played them & World XI's, Test standard & higher. Lillee also took 54 WSC ODI wkts @ 14 a piece, he retired as the 1st man to take 100 ODI wkts, 157 @ 18.47. Amongst the greatest in ODI as well. Lillee held both the Test & ODI records, plus still holds the record for the most wickets in a Calendar Year by a fast bowler, which is 85 in just 15 Tests. Incredible. Still the greatest in Dennis Keith Lillee. Still the best.

@@graemealexander8804 first of all Lillee was not a complete fast bowler as he has been portrayed. He lacked a good Yorker and had Weaknesses against left handers. Even Rod Marsh admitted this fact about lillee. Secondly Akram and Marshall are two of the most complete fast bowlers of all time. In terms of skill Akram is the greatest followed by Marshall. Lillee's place comes after them in terms of skill and making ball talk. In terms of success and performance, and with success I mean all round success in all conditions of all the cricket playing countries, Marshall is the greatest followed by Hadlee, Steyn, Mcgrath, Donald, Imran, Wasim etc. Lillee was superb in England, Australia and New Zealand. Played 65 test matches out of his total 70 matches in these three countries. Played 1 match in West Indies where he broke down due to injury so, not his fault. Played 4 matches in Asian subcontinents, 3 in Pakistan in 1980 and 1 in Sri Lanka in 1983 and failed to perform in all these matches. But yes this is a small sample size data so, I m not counting it against him and he might had done better if he would have played there more. But the fact that he failed and is proven in only 3 countries should count against him when comparing him with all the other great fast bowlers who have succeeded in their home as well as away and in subcontinental flat pancakes as well. Why discount the efforts by these bowlers who r proven in all the conditions against those who are not proven. Try to think rationally by putting your bias aside.

It was the perfect way to end his career, he had really struggled with form and injuries the last couple of years, the selectors would have had to make a difficult decision and drop him but he managed to produce his best with 19 wickets in last 3 Tests although he was down to medium pace by then.

No doubt Lillie is a legend of pace bowling, however there is a caveat about his bowling career statistics, Lille seldom played outside the comfort zone of Australia, New Zealand and England. He took 350 wickets (in his career tally of 355) in those 3 countries where the conditions benefit pace bowlers. So basically we don't know how good he was in challenging condtions like the Sub continent where the conditions favor less to pacers. Mind it a great bowlers must've performed in all situations, which is why bowlers like Mc Grath, Anderson, Wasim, Waqar, Steyn, Pollock are undisputed legends when it comes to pace bowling.

I don’t believe that anyone could provide a convincing argument to support the belief that anyone was better than DK. Different skill sets, conditions etc I understand. But on the entirety of any career, nobody better. I certainly think there have been numerous fast bowlers who would’ve taken more wickets if they had played as much cricket as Dennis did in Australian and English conditions but they wouldn’t have outdone him.

Although many say that stats are not everything and rightly so, but the fact also remains that stats don't lie either. One of the real measure of a cricketer's ( batsman or bowler) greatness is how well he plays in unfavorable conditions and on foreign soil. And sorry to say DL fails miserably on both these accounts. He played well only in Australia and England, on bouncy pitches and favourable swinging conditions respectively. It's like a great batsman playing well only on flat wickets. Well I mean no disrespect towards DL nor do I doubt his overall greatness but one can't deny the fact that he was a great menacing and mean fast bowler, albeit only in favourable conditions.

Really? So he played the World XI at the WACA. It included Sunil Gavaskar, Gary Sobers, Clive Lloyd, Farahkh Engineer, Zaheer Abbas, Rohan Kanai, Tony Greig & Lillee scorched them out, taking 8/29 & 12/92 for the match. What nonsense you wrote. Tony Cosier rates Lillee as the best fast bowler ever to play on Carribean shores. Viv Richards rates him as the best, as does Ian Botham, David Gower, Clive Lloyd, Tony Greig, Richie Benaud, Garry Sobers, Richard Hadlee, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner etc. Dennis dismissed Viv Richards 9 times in Tests, 16 times in all Tests & WSC SuperTests. Astonishing record against the best batsman of the modern era and the best since Bradman. Facts for you: All time. He took a further 67 wkts in SuperTests in 14 WSC matches, against the mighty West Indies & World XI's. A further 24 wkts in 4 Tests vs World XI in 1972. 91 wkts in all not accounted for. Had they, his official record would be: 88 Tests, 446 wkts. Over 5 wkts a Test. Against the best sides World cricket has ever seen. He took 12/92 in a match against the World XI. Who does that?! Lillee also took 54 WSC ODI wkts @ 14 a piece, he retired as the 1st man to take 100 ODI wkts, 157 @ 18.47. Amongst the greatest in ODI as well. The greatest in Dennis Keith Lillee.

@SPORTS TAK INDIA True. He only played the 3 tests in Pakistan only half fit with knee issues. Likewise his lone tour to the West Indies in 1973 was ruined by stress fractures to the back (although Lillee bowled very well in the WI during the super tests in World Series Cricket but they don't count on his test or first class record). Lillee was a superb bowler in generally all conditions as were Ambrose, Imran, Marshall, McGrath, and Steyn. The knock on Lillee for his record in Pakistan and the WI needs to be taken into context in that regard.

Lillee played during a time when there wasn't anywhere near as much cricket being played as in Akram's time (yes I know there is SOME overlap but for the most part, Lillee was retired and THEN Akram's career took off) and teams certainly didn't tour the sub-continent as much as in later years... Why?.. Because stadiums, crowds, team amenities and pitches in the sub-continent were all so horrid that many teams simply refused to tour there until such time as standards were lifted. If Lillee had the opportunity to play more on the sub-continent then he certainly would've been better.. but you can't blame the guy for something beyond his control... Teams used to HATE visiting the sub-continent in those days because playing professional sport in a sub-standard setting wasn't exactly inspiring.
