Acclaimed orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa died February 6, 2024 at age 88. In this profile that originally aired February 8, 1998, Ozawa talked with "Sunday Morning" host Charles Osgood about straddling East and West, his passion for sports, and the challenge of conducting choruses on five continents in a satellite-connected performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to open the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

    Seiji Ozawa and Zubin Mehta led the way for so many Asian conductors and musicians in the world of Western Classical music. I will sorely miss him.

    A wonderful man and conductor. I'll never forget the impact his Boston SO Mahler 1 on Deutscher Grammophon made on me when I first heard it. His recording of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder is still one of the best in the catalogue. Rest in peace, Maestro!

    He was a marvelous conductor. Disappointed there was no mention of his early years at the San Francisco symphony. Fortunate to have seen him conduct

    I met him in a Japanese restaurant in Vienna near the opera house during the period when he conducted the Vienna Opera.

    😢😢😢rest in peace gentle giant 😢😢😢 hurts so bad losing someone that made us feel so good, music is a spiritual asset, it's eternal, people that give us great emotions in music never die at all, he was such a great guy beyond borders, condolences family, fans are invited to organize tribute events keeping the memory alive because...music is our family and we will never be apart anymore, music is everything, once we can enjoy a concert together, any other struggle of life becomes a piece of cake ❤🎉❤

    After seeing John williams and Yo Yo ma 02/20/2024 They had a very heartfelt tribute for this gentleman. I am an inspiring composer and i feel this is the right path. Any Suggestions. Open to all!
