I really find this useful as I'm training to become a counsellor and building resilience is such a key part of coping with what the clients have coming up. I find that working on resilience in the morning to be especially useful
I wouldn’t say welcome stress but having the tools to deal with it is the way to go!
Persistence and resilience can only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems. Don't hate struggles. they make you stronger. While standing in the storm and the wind tries to blow you away, adjust your sails. Know that deep inside, you are resilient, brave, and so much stronger than your fears. Hi guys! It's me again :) You might have seen me before but my desire to inspire more people is what keeps me pushing to reach out more. We own a cookie shop business in our college town. When we first started it, we just graduated college and were living in our car with very little direction, just a huge passion to be successful. I started it out of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night with my boyfriend, Bran. It was a crazy experience but it worked! We became a success! And how we have our first storefront location (a second one currently under construction but launching soon!) We started it to fund a year long backpacking trip around the world and to be successful while living the life of our dreams.
When you not run for success, you no longer afraid of failure...you just do your work and keep god in mind.
Such a great talk, this should be taught in schools...
i was always self criticizing but just now i learnt to be kind and compassionate with my self,i will welcome stress,rebound from failure and will be more resilient in my path and career than before thanks from such a motivating speach

I was looking for a video that may help me to more understand the stress to resilient mind. I found this one and I love the way he explains everything and the practicality of his examples. The ideal scenario of coping with stress are rightfully slowly but if we really trust the process, and all of his advices, well it may help A lot. More committed will surely result to much better results.

There are 2 ways to handle stress: 1- avoid stress thus producing more stress 2- lean into stress, learn the source and build resilience

I have heard of the word "resilience" many times but I have never put an effort into understanding it. Your presentation has beautifully explained the importance of this characteristic to overcoming stresses and develop mental strength.

A resilient person will not be too elated when things go their way, and they will not be too down when things are not going their way. Rather, they know this is part of being in this world of change. Just because the externals are changing does not mean that our internal world has to change as well.

Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient
I believe the NASA mission statement, "Failure is not an option.", refers to the mission overall. It seems to me the inference is to make the mistakes and experience the possibilities, learn from the real-world experience and adjust practices as needs. So your rebuttal to the slogan in the beginning is kind of moot to me. I liked the thesis, though. I needed the reminder and it was well done. Thank you for this, Dr. Rose.
Ignoring that breathing might be the best challenge at handling stress...
There is no such thing as stress, either positive or negative. The stories you tell yourself about life events (if in the past, are seen as memory or if in the future, are seen as imagination) is what makes it only apparently ‘stress’. Remain present in just this moment, without ceasing, and watch the stories your mind comes up with. And when you believe these stories, you suffer. How much have you been stressed about things that once were or things yet to come? And neither of these is happening now. Be free from ‘stress’ by recognizing the stories you tell yourself and actually believe. See what is revealed - that the present moment has been obscured, with no peace to be found, when stuck in this habitual pattern of mind. Notice the pattern without judgement or guilt and soon peace is here, now. Stress is just another concept. Busy happens. Stress is mind-created. Be with what IS, here and now! 😎

@@challo8067 Exhaustion is not a word I would use to describe what I'm personally going through, as I'm debilitated to such a degree that it limits my activities to mostly reading and watching calm movies, and that's from stess related "exhaustion" (not school or work related stress, but stress that I personally decided to take on, because I thought it'd be good for me and others) and have been so for about half a year now, and I can expect to be so for about a half a year more, along with a couple of years before I can expect to manage the same amounts of stress as I could before I *burned out*.

Stress is not "there to build resilience". Stress is a warning sign that your body uses to influence your behavior in a way that would avoid potentially harmful outcome. It is quite literally your mind purposely triggering a shot of hormones that make you feel unpleasant. Just as it triggers release of dopamine when you think you did something beneficial to you. The purpose of this is that you adopt your behavior (stress feels bad > avoid repeating behavior that caused it, happiness feels good > repeat). Stress is a helpful tool. Just use it right instead of suppressing it, avoiding it, not focusing on it or making up stories about how it is there to build resilience.

That's not what he said. The point is to effectively deal with stress, not to avoid it. If you want to accomplish anything of meaning, then you are going to face stress. For me, accomplishing meaningful things leads to a more beautiful life.

I found this speech very difficult to understand as around the middle of each sentence his voice dropped to a level which often, for me, made what he was saying difficult or impossible to understand. I have a hearing loss, but have hearing aids and was using headphones to enhance the sound, but still only got about half of each sentence. This is the first time this has happened to me while listening to Ted Talks.

Cillit Bang Wrong, exposure does not help some if you do not address stuck patterns of thinking. Did exposure therapy for ages. I did do more things though, but anxiety or mood never changed with it.
How about we lump everyone into the same situation and think it’s an easy fix. 👎🏻
