From ‘Sprint’: The Five-Act Interview

One of the hardest things about business is how to figure out whether your ideas will succeed in the market. We created the sprint process to give companies a powerful tool for answering these kinds of questions.
In our book on sprints, we explain how to use customer interviews as a way of fast-forwarding to the day when your product is in the market, and seeing real customers react to your ideas. These customer interviews are a critical part of every sprint.
But reading about customer interviews is kind of like having a friend tell you about a great movie-it’s just not the same as seeing it yourself.
So in this video, we’re going to show you how to conduct great customer interviews. You get to watch our partner Michael Margolis as he interviews a customer and tests a prototype with her.
We’ve got a lot more information on how to plan and run these kinds of tests, including how to find customers, how to prepare a script for your interviews, and some advanced tips from Michael. It’s all in the book, which you can find on Amazon or anywhere books are for sale. And check out thesprintbook.com for links to even more free resources.

Don't underestimate the importance of note taking. The note taker also needs to be skilled and have the right ears for the job. Even better 2 note takers perhaps one can be mind mapping. I've tried to do interviewing without help and it is quite difficult. I also have had inexperienced note takers and the have filtered what they think was important or not :( gasp.

Great video and great book!, thanks for this. Question, do we have to explain what is the app about before the person test it?

im getting confused with the prototype part that is it a just wireframe kinda prototype or the end product. because some companies don't like to share any kinda information with others.

Interesting... In Act 5 I guess its a good opportunity to ping the customer for suggestions for improvements/ gaps too.

+Rod Dunne That's definitely an option, but I'd be cautious. Most users aren't technologists or designers, so they're simply not capable of describing solutions you can act on. Typically, they also have a minimal sense of the aggregate demand in the market you're serving and over-represent their own view-even though they're not trying to be manipulative. Another thing: if you happen to know for sure they'll be a user of the system down the road-which often happens in corporate environments-the person can be disappointed you didn't implement their specific suggestions. I usually do something similar to Michael towards the end and ask "if there's anything else they'd like to add." Often times, they offer something useful that's only tangentially related to the Task (e.g. no women in the marketing materials). Depending on their personality, some folks may spout out a bunch of detailed suggestions, but others won't know what to say when "put on the spot" and say they "need to think about it."

+Rod Dunne Act 5 is a great opportunity to ask about pros and cons, and for comparisons of the prototypes you're testing or other products they've used. Suggestions are helpful to the extent that they highlight aspects of a design or product that dissatisfy users. Just be cautious not to take their suggested solutions too literally. It's the "why" behind a suggestion that's most valuable.

+Luke Andrews GV mentioned before using Hangouts, Webex, Airplay, etc to stream the interview to the team. However, they don't record the video; preferring to 'designate a court reporter' to type out the discussion for later indexing, scanning, reviewing. Quote 'It’s kind of a pain, but these notes become an incredibly valuable reference after the study, and a text document is a heck of a lot faster to scan for quotes and reactions than a video recording. Often times, we don’t record the study and rely on these notes instead.' > library.gv.com/the-product-design-sprint-validate-day-5-761292b20d05#.u98p1jqcb

Do we have to tell the person about what the app does or what is it about before telling them to do tasks? Which of these two is better: "We have this app prototype, it´s a fitness app that lets you hire trainers and you can receive online training programs by video, could you please try to choose and start a program?" "Well we have an app prototype, could you please try to choose and start a program?"

Interesting insightful notes, but I have a question, is this an interactive prototype or high level a developed app for testing? because I see the interviewee interact with it like a real product

@@aymanz83 they build most of their prototypes in Keynote actually. but InVision, Marvel or something simple like that works great. they don't use anything too advanced

The sensitivity on his microphone is jacked way up. Every time he closes his mouth, I can hear his cheeks and lips press and squish together. Those ASMR mouth noises are not fun to listen to while I'm trying to focus on his words. ::shudders::
