From retail to resale: the trend disrupting fashion

We're buying more clothes than ever, but it's not all fast fashion. More than half of 25- to 34-year-olds buy secondhand or vintage clothes, and resale apps such as Depop, Stock X and Vestiaire Collective are tapping into the millennial and generation Z market. But if people are buying secondhand they're not buying new. Grace Shutti investigates how the fashion world is responding

Fast-fashion is built upon the suffering of millions of workers (90% women, many children) in China, Bangladesh, Cambodia... workers who have to endure endless shifts for wages below the poverty line. And let's not mention the sexual harassment the young female workers suffer in those sweatshops. We all know about this: the exploitation, the pollution of the air and the waterways, the mountains of clothes piling up in land-fills all over the world.... Let's boycott fast-fashion. Let's share, swap, buy second hand, support fairtrade brands... and above all, do we still need more clothes? Javi (Spain)

I feel like this isn't that much of a new thing, yeah these apps have made a difference but people have been using charity shops for ages, that's where lots of depop sellers get their clothes from

that isabelle varna girl sells her clothes for ridiculous prices. Depop used to be cheap, but it's just gentrification of charity shops now. If i buy on depop, its a treat now. depop is SO expensive i can't afford to regularly shop on there anymore. people are trying to sell £2 charity shop clothes they bought for £40-£45, sometimes more. people also rip off labels of fast fashion brands and upload it to depop, and then label it as 'vintage' and 'y2k' so then charge what they want, when its actually just a new look or a river island top lol. don't get me started on ali-express drop shippers on there as well FFS.

Let's fight fast-fashion!!!! Millions of workers, mainly women, are exploited in asian sweatshops sewing for the richest people in the world (the owners of Zara, H&M, Primark, M&S...). Love what you have and inherit, swap, buy second hand and, above all, do not follow trends: they are invented by someone looking for your money. Javi (Spain).

Let’s be real though, we aren’t killing everything 🙄 not only that but I don’t at all feel sorry for the huge companies that have made millions off polluting our planet and rip us off to pay pennies to the real people making the garments they sell... When so much of those items end up in landfill... not going to be guilted into feeling sorry for these million pound companies that just want more of our money for minimum effort 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our generation is looked down on for anything and everything but in reality, older generations are just angry we’re actually doing some positive and speaking up about the issues of the world
