I cried when watching this. Jim as an old frail man, & now he's gone. One of my heroes as a kid - the greatest baseball team ever. He's young forever in my mind, as were all the "Boys of Summer" in Detroit 1968.

Jim Northrop played with Baltimore after leaving Detroit and I remember Earl Weaver using him on many occasions when a big hit was needed. This guy was clutch.

@@FromGloryDays You're more than welcome. I remember the '68 season. Just when Balt began to make gains in the pennant race the Tigers would pull away. Weaver replaced Hank Bauer at mid-season and Balt finished strong but the Tigers were not to be denied in '68. So many things happened that year. I was in the 9th grade and an Orioles fan.

Somehow, the interviewer reminds me of Chevy Chase, although he’s not trying to be funny. Something about his mannerisms, the way he talks, the slight smile he always has on his face, and he kinda looks like him.

First time at Tiger Stadium, 9 years old, Northrup was my hero. Afraid, I walked to him before the game, he was in the front seats. I handed him a ball my father bought me just for his autograph. I asked him timidly for him to sign it. He barked at me, fuck you kid, get the fuck away from me! He threw the ball at me. I went back up to where my dad was sitting, he asked me what happened...........my father went down and punched hiss ass.

@@dallasbrubaker6054 , Not bullshit. My Father was raised an orphan in a Catholic church in Detroit, and was on the streets at 16. He was a badass. Of course we were booted from the stadium, but Jim got his. After, Pops took me to his brothers corner bar, had my first 'Vernor's', because it looked like the beer they were drinking. They were crazy laughing reliving the story. This was in my family tales FOREVER!

Northrup had a less than charitable side to him (as do many people) and I don’t doubt Michigan Mister’s account at all. Lots of players were snotty or worse when it came to autographs.

Jim Northrup was my all-time favorite Tiger player. I remember the game where he hit two grand slams. What few remember is that later in the game he came up again with the bases loaded and nearly hit another one. He also made one of the best catches I've ever seen made by a left fielder at Tiger Stadium. Jimmy was a great athlete. God bless you Jim! You gave this young lad a lot of baseball thrills and memories!

That catch saved the game and a shutout for Lolich 'cause it happened in the bottom of the ninth, if it's the catch I'm thinking of. Absolutely classic way of ending a game.

At a Sunday afternoon game at Fenway Park in 1972, Jim Northrup playing right field, a woman came from behind and attempted to put her arms around Northrup who got loose and trotted to the infield as security managed the situation. It was funny as I was just a kid watching this. Woody Fryman I remember pitched that day.

When he managed the Twins that one season (1969) Calvin Griffith, the owner, told him to not disturb him between 3 and 4 pm because he liked to lay on the sofa in his office and take a nap. Martin wrote in his book "#1" that he would purposely knock on the door at 3:30 just to tick him off. That shocked me when I read that because Martin seemed like the type of manager who didn't clash with the owners. It must have been Griffith who brought out the worst in Martin (sarcasm). LOL
