From DSLR to smart telescope - step by step, start to finish

Ғылым және технология

Give your DSLR, Mirrorless, or other camera a new purpose in life! Much cheaper and much more fun than eVscope or Stellina!
This is a fun project (for yourself, for parent and child, or for schools!) to transform your camera into a fully automated, smartphone controlled smart telescope (for assisted astronomy rather than astrophotography)!! Now this is all experimental, tons of things can go wrong, so please be aware of that, e.g. at your own risk! BUT all the equipment is reusable, and is overall great equipment for astronomy and astrophotography!
Total budged based on below links (as of time of writing, assuming you already own camera and lens): ~620 USD

Superb tutorial video and greatly appreciated. The workflow is way simpler (and possibly cheaper) than any comparable set of tools for DSA. However, with the most recent versions of the stellarmate and syncscan pro, I wasn't able to successfully complete the "Modify Station" step in the syncscan app (after several attempts and going through all the potential checks). I have since found a simpler solution that works like a charm. I used a USB RJ12 EQMOD cable ($20) to make a direct connection between the mount and Raspberry Pi device. This eliminates the need for any wireless communication between the mount and stellarmate. Furthermore, this also eliminates the need to switch to the slow 2.4ghg for stellarmate wifi connection. I hope the tip helps...

I highly recommend a manfrotto 200pl quick release plate instead of the long dovetail. It fits perfectly within at least skywatchers mount systems. It’s strong metal and comes with a secondary clip that fits into many larger camera lenses (such as my 100-400ii) along with its normal screw to ensure that it it perfectly aligned with the lens. I use this setup on my AZ-GTI all the time

Very cool! There are so many great options for sharing video these days. I have a bunch of Pi boards and old Android phones (running LineageOS), so will have to give this a try. I see you switched to an astrocamera partway through as well--seems like the right call to manage weight. Did you find the Pi 4 necessary, or would a 3 work as well? The power requirements of the 4 are a little high for many portable batteries. For my purposes, I'd prefer an eMMC-based board, such as one of the Hardkernel or Rock64 devices. Pi OS corruption is really frustrating.

So down the rabbit hole I go... I more or less followed this guide. Live stacking hasn't as yet worked out quite as I'd expected/hoped, but I've been able to run a few sequences on M31 and M42, stack/process them in Siril, and get results I'm happy with (even as I recognize there's lots of room for improvement). And now I want more. Hoping you might comment on my thoughts for the way ahead, or perhaps this will be an idea for a video when you come back from your break. I have a Canon DSLR with a good-quality zoom lens right now, and I have a CEM25P on the way. My objective is to spread out the cost a bit, while still making noticeable improvements at each step, and not buy gear (or at least much gear) that will become useless in the future. Here's what I'm thinking for the next steps, with the expectation that there will be some time between each step: 0. (already on the way) Go-to EQ mount 1. Buy a small (~60-80mm) refractor, probably a triplet, with field flattener/reducer and the various fiddly bits to connect to my DSLR. Likely an electronic focuser as well at this point. Sharpstar 61, Astro-Tech 80EDT, etc. is what I'm thinking here. 2. Guide scope/camera. I'm thinking the Sky-Watcher 50 for this--a bit of overkill, but I can also image with it if I want a shorter focal length than the refractor above. 3. Dedicated astro camera, probably OSC. 4. Somewhere in here, Windows mini-PC to run NINA. I'm thinking that if I still want (and can afford) more after this, I'm still going to have good equipment that I can use for other purposes--a stationary vs. portable rig, or a second rig for planetary work, or... I'd appreciate any thoughts on these steps. Thanks for all you do here.

I was really excited to try this project, with a similar set-up (skywatcher All-View with Synscan WiFi Dongle, Celestron C-90 scope and a Canon 20D camera.) I decided to buy the Stellarmate OS to replace my Astroberry. After 48 hours of pulling my hair out trying to get the mount to connect with EKOs and being frustrated with the tiny Stellarmate interface on my iPhone , I almost threw everything off of the roof. I gave it one last try with my wife's iPad and was able to get everything working at least intermittently. I think the problem may be with the GTIAltAz INDI driver. I may also purchase a cheap Android tablet to dedicate to the Stellarmate. I am still quite frustrated, but I think there might be hope. Thanks Cuiv for once again getting me excited about astronomy, and depleting my budget.

Orion delayed the StarSeeker IV another couple of weeks past their original ETA, but it arrived the other day. That, EOS 6D, and a Canon 100-400L zoom at 400 (and the obligatory Pi) were the kit I took out last night--and what do you know, it worked just like you showed. Told it to go to Andromeda, it slewed, captured, plate-solved, adjusted, captured again, and there was the galaxy right in the middle of the frame. Cool! I think I need to tinker with some of the StellarMate settings--it won't do exposures more than a few seconds in live-stack mode, and it seems it wants to move the mount during the exposures--but the proof-of-concept is sure working. But I think this is going to be a gateway drug...

Well, between family visits and cloudy skies, I haven't been able to do much more with it until this week. But now I've managed to image Andromeda and the Orion Nebula (10 sec subs)--I'm sure they won't win any awards, but I'm happy with what I'm seeing. I'm starting to get the hang of Siril for processing, but definitely lots to learn there too. And already ordered an iOptron CEM25P. Gateway drug indeed...

UPDATE: While I got great feedback from users who completed the project, others have noted that they had trouble with the software part (I assume referring to Stellarmate) that didn't work for them. Obviously this is a big problem. I haven't used Stellarmate for a while (got into an astro-slump, e.g. abandoning the hobby for a while) so I don't know what the latest status is. However, please be aware of this if you are thinking of doing this project. The process is very interesting, and pretty much all of the purchases can be reused for normal astrophotography, but you have been warned. I had a lot of fun turning my cameras into smart telescopes for electronically assisted astronomy! Who will have a try at it??

It is awesome that you can have such an advanced feature set with almost budget equipment. People that is starting in astrophotography could learn a lot with things like this, and then dive into the black hole of buying equipment with at least a bit more information :) I already have a system like that, but finally I went to the ASIAIR Pro as control unit. Canon 4000D astromodified with Samyang 135mm and l-eNhance filter. AZ-GTi EQ mode and an ASI120MC-S + Miniscope 130mm f4.0 for the guiding. it weights less than 7Kg + 1.5 for the tripod. Awesome for transport as it fits all inside a small suitcase. Unfortunately I did not have time yet to make a video for my channel or write an article to my blog yet. I will try to do that before the end of the year.
