From Depression & Separation to Multi-Millionaire | Deki Shukla | Mompreneur #84

As a refugee who embarked on a harrowing journey to escape a troubled past at a tender age, marked by the absence of familial connections for countless years, narratives have become my lifeline. Without the semblance of a permanent address, stories have emerged as my sole asset, composed of dreams, hopes, and ideas-a treasure trove I hold in the highest regard.
My upbringing was steeped in the richness of narratives, acting as the driving force behind my pursuit of continuous growth and self-improvement. This journey has not only solidified my passion for storytelling but has also highlighted the profound impact it has on our scattered global community. This endeavor has served as a vital bridge, fostering mutual understanding among individuals from varying walks of life. It's been instrumental in bridging the generational gap, uniting the wisdom of yesteryears with the vigor of the present through the conduit of stories, experiences, and ideas.

Very inspiring line.... "Mummy i don't want to eat Uber eats... Ask brother to boil rice i will cook broccoli because l want to save my pocket money to sponsor TCV students"... Huge sacrifice by your children at this age. May God bless your children and also protect your children.

One of the most inspiring interviews I've seen. For a second I was very angry at her husband and wanted to blame his Indianness, his otherness, for his being so lacking in empathy and sense of responsibility. Then I realized Tibetan men are equally capable of being abusive toward their wives. My father, until he gave up alcohol, was same, if not worse. Deki la reminds me of my mother, always putting her children's welfare above all else. Deki la also reminds me of the inherent goodness and resilience in women, barring a few like her ex mother in law. Thank you Deki la and A-haa.

The key lesson here is to never endure an abusive relationship or marriage. Prioritise your own well being, your childrens’ happiness and overall peace. Don’t settle in places where you are not welcomed or valued. Society shamelessly expects women to put everyone above themselves to make their family, their husbands and in- laws happy. Then only do we get compliments like, “such a good woman”, “great mom”, “great wife”, “great daughter”. Sometimes us women even perpetuate these narratives because we are conditioned to think that since childhood and we have internalized it. But all we really need is a wake up call like this. Children needs both parents but not if having them both risks their well-being too. If anything costs your sanity and mental health, it’s not worth it. Don’t just walk away, RUN and never look back. Much love to Acha Deki la 🎉❤

Yes, this is the type of story that can make a real difference in terms of being a veritable eye-opener to many who know how to listen to. For me, listening to her is like reading a veritable page-turner, with her Tibetanness and humaneness standing out as something much more than a palliative cushion to what she had undergone, once she learned about the complicated case of her husband's mental health. The bliss and wonder being sustained by her three angels, her sensible children, who know their dear mom, who knows her own mom, the sturdy backbone of her life's struggle story so far. Thanks for this learning episode. In essence, I salute to her retentiveness.

What a harrowing story and yet also a story of amazing resilience and business acumen and success. It’s sad that victims enable their abuse because of perceived romantic love, of situation with kids etc. She was quick to forgive the ex for all the horrible treatments saying his bipolar caused them. But that’s not true. Bipolar cannot be excuse for such abusive behavior and exploitation by him and his family. It has more to do with the Indian middle class values and mentality, treating daughters in laws as nothing but an opportunity to exploit. You know all the stories of endless dowry demands and bride burnings. Obsessed with wealth and physical appearances. The son as perfect always. Very little genuine love and compassion for the human being. I hope you drop that last name and teach your children the values that you and your Tibetan community share. They have gone thru so much also, poor things!

Yes, it’s true. In laws think they are superior. Richness of Buddhism wins over Hinduism . The battle with Tibetan is not easy , it is wait and see philosophy. Time will tell. Eventually in-laws came to her door and requested to live together, what a shame. It’s like giving them a harsh slap in their face.

What an incredible story of resilience and determination! It's truly inspiring to hear how this remarkable woman overcame immense challenges to create a better life for herself and her children. Her journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of perseverance. From sleeping in her car to building successful businesses, she exemplifies courage, hard work, and compassion. Her focus on service over personal gain is admirable and speaks volumes about her character. As someone who also studied in a Tibetan Village School in India, she embodies the values of community, gratitude, and paying it forward. Her unwavering commitment to helping others is truly commendable. Thank you for sharing her story. It serves as a reminder that no matter how tough life gets, with determination and a heart full of kindness, anything is possible. 💪🌟

I am so inspired by Deki la's story. Some people choose to destroy other people's lives for their own selfish reasons. Although they attempted everything to break her spirit, including being inhuman and exploiting her situation, they were unable to break her spirit. Imagine how traumatized her children were when they were young. Her children were her strength. I pray that God will bless all humans with the mental strength to face such challenges in life. As there are many wolves in sheep's clothing and only people who are kind like Deki la have experience such pain which she didn’t deserve. She never gave up and was persistent .. she is the best example of God only helping those who help themselves. The husband and in-law had the power to provide her with a fulfilling marriage and a happy home, but the entire family lacked basic human decency such people are takers and they are not giver and in reality such people are never happy and waste their lives being miserable. That’s their Karma. He is bipolar raised by toxic parents. Her hard work is now bearing fruit. She got a solid business and the children are with her. Sadly the husband is not in the picture because of his own doing. Had he made conscious decisions to protect and provide for his own family then relying on mother. Mother in low might have been not happy that her son brought in a wife from different race. She shouldn’t have let her son marry her if she didn’t like the idea but after marriage and giving birth to her grandchildren she should have treated her fairly and given her the respect she deserves. Instead she chose to be petty with her tibetan daughter in law. It is a good thing that most Tibetans are kind and have a strong sense of integrity, but people take advantage of it instead of valuing it. I wish Deki la all the best. Your children and you deserve every success you achieve.

If you read my comment above, my Tibetan husband got his karma too. His lawyer wanted to cancel my visa in the first place but when she found out the truth, she helped to apply asylum in Australia and his asylum application will be cancelled.

The podcast I listened to was truly inspiring! It felt like a movie with a heartwarming ending after a sad story. Listening to the struggles of a brave woman and how she overcame them, I realized the true strength and power of women. We may stumble and fall, but we always get back up and keep going. I admire and respect the woman who shared her story. Her journey taught me that no matter the challenge if we have inner strength, we can conquer anything. Society may judge us, but they don't know the hardships we face. It's easy to say things, but we must remember to put ourselves in other people's shoes and understand their pain. If I ever have the chance, I would love to meet this brave woman and thank her for her courage. From one woman to another, I send my regards from Austria.
