From Death to Birth: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

"The Green Knight," David Lowery's 2021 feature film, offers viewers a surreal spin on a 14th-century English poem about a youth who accepts a bizarre challenge from a mysterious knight. Entertaining as it is, the film completely buries the poem's richly Christian symbolism. "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is an allegory about the spiritual journey from death to birth which all God-seekers must undertake. As such, it's a worthy companion to the 14th-century English mysticism of Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, Dame Julian of Norwich, and the anonymous author of "The Cloud of Unknowing."

I am so happy that you made this! “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” was the first poem that fascinated me when I was a young Medieval English major at the University of California, at Berkeley. Please do “Pearl,” “Cleanness,” and “Patience.”
