Mel, I think I discovered your channel around 5 or so years ago. I remember telling you this long ago, but since you asked in today’s video why we watch your channel, I’ll say it again! You and I don’t have much in common (besides our birthday, which I just discovered a few days ago). I’m old enough to be your mother. I live clear across the world. I’m the most organized person ever. Housework and cooking brings me joy, and I pride myself in having a spotless home. So why do I watch? I like you! I think you’re amazing! I consider you a friend, just one I haven’t met!

I’m new to your channel. Love your accent (I’m in the US) love your little black dog!! I know it’s so stressful for you to have to move. But just watching you and your husband go through your kitchen, I was thinking how good it’s going to feel to have to go through your stuff and downsize. Like a bit of a forced task, but you are going to be so relieved to move into a new place with such a lighter load. Keep up the great work, looking forward to more videos!!! 😊

Hey there! Thanks for checking out my channel and leaving such a nice comment. I'm glad you love my accent and my adorable little black dog - her name is Peggy - named after Peggy Schuyler from Hamilton. lol. Moving can definitely be stressful, but I'm trying to focus on the positive side of downsizing. Plus, it's a great opportunity to declutter and start fresh. Thanks for the support and I can't wait to share more videos with you!

Hi Mel. I am also a Mel. My husband and I have been married for 20 years (together 23 years) and we have two boys, 19 & 18. I live in regional Victoria. I work full time as does my husband and sons. We too are renting and the plan is to eventually buy, but not right now. Your channel came up as a suggestion in my KZread home page and I thought 'Why not?!' I aspire to be organised but it hasn't happened yet but I still hope to be organised one day. Seeing someone start a decluttering/organising challenge is inspiring so that's why I'm here and why I subscribed. Good luck with the move. Packing up a house after living there for 12 years with 6 people is a challenge! But you've got this. it may not be perfect, but it will be done and sometimes that's the best we can hope for.

Just discovered your channel today, sick in bed after nursing my son through an illness since the weekend 😢 My head is pounding but even when I can’t watch, listening to your story is soothing to me. I understand that feeling of lack and feel like I’ll be chasing that down my whole life. People may see a version of me that I just don’t have belief in myself. However I do everything I can for my husband and son without much family help, and I know I should be proud of that. My upbringing contributes to this feeling of loneliness and lack, and now I am creating my own little world full of love for my family. I know I’ll look back with pride but my goal is to have more enjoyment each and every day until then, before my 4 year old is self-sufficient and those daily demands dial down. I treasure each moment and hope you will as well. Good luck on your journey and thank you for sharing, you touched my heart today ❤

New and subscribed after I heard your plight, I have definitely been in your moving shoes. 😂 I started off with the minimal mom because she is an icon for the new “minimalism” movement surrounded around a more comfortable less spartan minimal idea unlike the original movement. She was the easiest to do, then Dana K White because she evolved me into no “monica closets” and always Cass for organization, which is always evolving.

I went through a very similar experience five years ago when a house we had lived in for over a decade was sold. I want to caution you to take very very good care of your mental health and be kind an patient with yourself. Moving is stressful enough. Moving unexpectedly surrounded by uncertainty is another level of hard. I’m here on the other side of it to cheer you on and tell you that you will in fact make it through this and discover so much along the way. But I know it’s hard now. I am so excited 🎉for you all! When it comes to children we always ask them what their favourite things are & to pack their favourite things first! Then we are a little more ruthless with the rest. We remind them things we donate go to other families & the rubbish is getting recycled to make more paper lol 😂 I adore Cas, Dawn & Dana. Love their system of black trash bag, donate box & time will tell! It has changed my life. However we recently moved & now our systems are out of whack so I’m trying to fix them to suit this new house.

You’ve started well! I had to laugh at the labelling of the memorabilia bins, that would have been me too. That was something each kid could have easily done for themselves, using their own individual creativity. But it was a pressure relief for you, switching your nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic. I got it completely. Keep up the great work. The more you get rid of the easier it will be. We all need less than we have. When I think what my mother made do with, it was paultry compared to what I think I need. Good on you! 🎉

I have some rooms decluttered and a few more(the worst ones) to go still! Funny that you said we only get one life, my favorite thing to say is that I only get this one life, I want to enjoy it as much as possible! I know that going through this process will help me to enjoy my life! I really dislike living in a mess! Unlike you my man doesn't help out around the house(without nagging and then he only does begrudgingly), so anything I can do to help myself get things done easier is what I'm going for! My family didn't even want to believe me and claimed that the psychiatrist made up the diagnosis to get more money. At first they even thought that I was just lazy or that my husband and children didn't help me at all... Now they finally trust me and rather sometimes ask how I feel and if I need help with something... I wish you a nice week!! !

Thank you for your well wishes and I hope you continue to find support and understanding in your own journey. Take care!

A video of yours was a random suggestion by the YT algorithm recently and this one came up tonight. This is all very much in my wheelhouse. I'm a member of Cass' Organizing Experts, my niche is the neurodivergent or chronically disorganized and all things small space living. Downsizing/moving is a huge part of that and my fave kind of move is what I call a "crossover", where you have both spaces for a period of time and they're relatively close to each other, so you can take a number of trips to the new place with stuff and really get a feel for how much will fit comfortably. I'm Canadian (the other side of the country from Cass, lol), live in about 400 sq ft with my black toy poodle, and am empty nesting now. Just subscribed.

I subscribed because I like to support Australian channels, but also because you were and are real. I felt normal. I’m a sahm and I don’t have it together. I have moments when parts of my house are organised, but I find that if one spot is organised then something else somewhere else is being forgotten. I also enjoy your company. I often have your talking videos going in the background while I sew. My husband is also a delivery driver. We have our own company and that was a learning curve. We moved 5 years ago. 16 years in our house I had to pack. To be honest we are still unpacking. Thank you for the content

I found this channel along with another years ago, when I was desperate to find the ‘magic’ in having lovely streamlined homes. I discovered that by watching you, I could pinpoint what I was doing - sort of like seeing myself outside in - I realised that a major part of my constant mess was all the other people in my house and my own hobbies. Through watching you, I’ve made conscious effort to stop buying baskets to store excess things that could be sorted by discarding not keeping them 😂😂😂 Despite constantly decluttering, I found more things to let go of. How do these things breed?

Minimal mom says with left over storage containers to store them WITH the lids ON. Devote just a shelf or 2 to them. You will not store just to toss and have another dish to wash. Your left overs will not go bad as much so less food waste. And the dishes won’t pile up in sink as you need to keep washing things. Some combination will have to fit in fridge. And those will be with lids on.

Hi Mel, I wanted to put my 2 cents worth in. I too get very angry when a landlord wants to sell, I get very bitter and stressed. (we moved around a lot as a child) I have also been known to go crook at people who come in to see the house and open up cupboard doors ( i know i am shocking). I know some landlords have no choice, but considering the rental market at the moment how can some landlords do this type of thing. I have crazy anxiety when a new lease is expected, i worry that they are going to sell. So I know how you feel, but all will be good.

  • @MySemiSortedLife

OMG, I feel you! Landlords wanting to sell can really mess with your peace of mind. Often I feel like I'm treated like a second class citizen purely because I didn't buy a property in my 20's. (I will always regret that - but I'll never regret having my children). Let's hope for the best and keep our fingers crossed that we won't have to deal with this anxiety every time a new lease comes up! Look after yourself. x

But I do feel inspired to start decluttering now! 3 x adhd & ASD kids here and who am I kidding, adhd parents too I’m sure. Just curious to wonder, if you do have ADHD, adhd meds might improve your anxiety and depression. My daughters paed said adhd meds remove more anxiety because tasks can be planned easier with less demands etc (although not fooling proof).

Ah, the joys of ADHD and ASD parenting! It's like a circus, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience... I might look into at some stage - but it's such a hard thing to navigate...thank-you for the suggestion thought. good luck with your decluttering mission!

@@MySemiSortedLife lol, I hear that. The casino I uses to work at actually gave everyone one year.... but it was the short squatty ones with a handle so we couldn't use them at work. Lol. Great for soup though.

@@carolynoquinn4573 I'm sorry you had to learn the hard way - but your experience no doubt has made you stronger. I can see how easily that could happen to be honest - especially with all the "Buy now pay later" options. I'm a work in progress - thank-you for sharing your experience. I appreciate it. x
