From Broken to Whole Again: The Tale of Lucifer Morningstar

Фильм және анимация

Even with his short screen time so far, Hazbin Hotel's take on Lucifer Morningstar has left quite the lasting impact on me. So I wanted to go over his journey about how he overcame his pessimistic nature and learned what it felt like to dream big again!

A big thing I love about Lucifer is that he really is the Prince of Pride here. He blames Sinners for not being able to handle free will and only doing wicked things with it, not himself for giving them that free will in the first place. He blames Heaven for never listening and being too strict, whiling ignoring the fact that they were right and his idea of granting free will backfired. He seems confident that Charlie will suffer the same fate as he did, if he couldn't convince Heaven of anything how could she manage. He's got a subtle air of assuming he is always correct, and when something goes wrong shifts the blame to other people. His interactions with the hotel staff highlight his pride. He's decently polite, or at least tries to be, for the majority of his stay, but the second Alastor insults him and hampers his pride the gloves are off and he gets intensely pissy. He can't stand being upstaged or people taking credit for his work, especially his beloved daughter. When singing his song to prove that he can help Charlie he doesn't actually suggest anything to help her with the hotel and with her mission, just random showcases of his power to seem impressive. It's moreso about the showboating than genuinely assisting. But at the end of the day, he's still an Angel. There's no outright evil in his heart. He is still fueled by a desire to create and make people happy. It just so happens that most of his ideas are poorly thought through or unneeded. Even after thousands of failed rubber ducks its still just a "this is terrible" and not a "I'm bad at this." Yet we also see him manifest the positive aspects of pride. Pride for his daughter. When he sees the passion in her dreams and how much she's grown he realizes that he *did* make something worthwhile, someone who could do *better* than him. While it takes him a bit to come around he eventually admits that his little girl is doing alright and he's proud of how far she's come. He might not have been able to handle it, but maybe she can, and maybe that's okay.

@ArukiTsukaru no, just that he tried to give them good while ignoring the bad, and when the bad happened didn't take responsibility for it. The fact that the forbidden fruit exists in the first place suggests that humanity was supposed to get free will at some point, but Adam and Eve and/or the world around them weren't ready for it. Kinda like how you'd teach a 13 year old how to use a power drill but not a 3 year old.

I liked that he didn't even really seem to take Adam seriously until he tried to hurt Charlie again. THAT was the only thing to make him lose his crap. Interesting take on him for sure.

I really wish Charlie or someone would've said to Lucifer "you gave these people free will! Doesn't that mean these sinners also have the free will to change?" I feel like that line would've been great to add for Charlie's argument for the hotel to Lucifer himself and even during the trial of the Angels. Yeah Lucifer gave free will for humans to be bad, but that doesn't mean they can't change because of the free will he gave.

I forgot where from but I heard a saying to the effect of “being selfish is easy because you just have to not care about others”, with this in mind in Lucifer’s eyes people _chose_ to be bad because being selfless was harder, so it could be he sees Sinners as having taken the easy way out in life and now they’re paying for it in Hell. Honestly I feel bad for Lucifer: cast out of his community/family for having new ideas, his wife leaves him after years together, then his daughter turns around and wants to make nice with the same people who told you to GTFO? That Lucifer wasn’t even a little angry at Charlie speak to his character so much: he clearly loves his daughter more than she loves him (she only called him not because she was worried about him but because she needed something for her passion project, I lost a lot of my liking for Charlie there) 😒😒😒

@@LadyLeomon in Charlie's defense I think from her perspective it may look like he doesn't care about her, like he's obviously emotionally absent parent and there was a big miscomunication between them, Lucifer unintentionally created walls between him and everyone else and maybe Charlie thought that he disappointed in her (also judging by the beginning sequence of the pilot, but this aspect may changed ofc) so she kinda gave up reaching out to him Also I don't think she knows that very well about his mental state

  • @LadyLeomon

@@ohmydianxia313 in all fairness to that I say “I don’t think Charlie is all there mentally herself”. Come on, she sees her people being slaughtered every year and her bright idea is “maybe _we_ need to change and be better so they won’t want to kill us anymore?” Just look at the Season 1 Finale: she spent most of the episode throwing fireworks while yelling “sorry!” while her people, who she claimed to want to save, were being slaughtered (I know a bunch from the Cannibal Colony died) but it wasn’t until someone she was personally invested in (Pentious) died that she finally got serious and even then Adam tossed her around like a rag doll! Oh and Vaggie with her whole “live knowing you only do cos I let you” thing? Now Lute is going to arguably be an even bigger threat than Adam! Sure Adam was a nasty, sexist pr*ck but he wasn’t all that bright, Lute is smarter than he was and now she’s even more pissed because she lost her friend/superior. I’m all for mercy, but when the heroes set themselves up for more aggro later … I lose all sympathy for them

I've gotta say, after watching episode 5, I can wholeheartedly say that Lucifer is definitely one of my favourite characters of the show. I mean, the end of that episode was so heartbreaking. All Lucifer want was to protect Charlie. He doesn't want his own daughter to experience the same pain he went through. Lucifer had a dream and it was immediately put down, he didn't deserve the punishment honestly. He's such a depressing character, I wished I could just give him a hug.

(Warning, you've inspired theorizing 😆😅) Aaah, how did I not make that connection? Before we met him (& got to see his personality) I thought it was more of a 'Pride' thing, wanting the sinners to 'belong' to (be ruled by) him only, sort of like wanting all your toys in a locked toybox. Now that we know he made the 'extermination deal' on condition of sparing all Hellborn... Maybe it really _was_ an attempt to protect _them_ from the destruction of the sinners (who, unlike _lower_ Hellborn, are basically immortal unless Angelic weapons are involved, with unique abilities & souls they can sell for leverge/power). Also... Keeping sinners away from the other Highborn demons (like Paimon/Stolas) & Deadly Sins could prevent them from (having the access to) obtaining souls (like overlords do) & causing their _own_ uprising. I could easily see Mammon trying to pull shit like that (weirdly, Mimzy has a Mammon tattoo on the back of her shoulder, so maybe they're getting their influence into the Pride ring regardless).

I love one of the few ending shots where Lucifer has his wings splayed out, fully pissed and in demonic (or would it be fallen angel?) mode holding an almost equally powerful Charlie on his arm. Both clearly done with Adam’s shit and ready to rumble. It speaks a lot he’s willing to go so far to protect her and I suspect the new bond Lucifer and Charlie have made will be what saves them against Lilith. Father and daughter are mirror images of each other and it makes me wonder if the mom didn’t have an ulterior motive in keeping them apart. Like as Charlie grew up, she saw more of Lucifer in her and didn’t want her develop like he had.

Not gonna lie, the catholic in me feels like I’m doing something wrong by liking a character that is Lucifer himself. (K-8th catholic school). But I also recognize that hell and Lucifer have had different interpretations in the past from different religions and mythologies. So I can see that this show is simply showing Lucifer emphasizing the fallen angel aspect of his story so he is more sympathetic. From that point I can say that Lucifer has quickly become one of my favorite characters and I hope we see more of him.

I’m not saying that I’m a devil worshipper or anything only that I chose to do what I did and chose to look for a different path still looking 23 years later. Still a pastor friend of mine likes to say. “ religion is a deeply personal issue and everyone gets to their answer in their own way and their own time, Carlin said it best, Don’t kill anyone ( if you can help it) and don’t bang your neighbors wife. Outside of that it’s a crapshoot”. It was one of the most honest things I ever thought a religious personality could say.

my theory is (and this is based on what Viv has said about their relationship) that Lilith was trying to protect Charlie from the same heartache Lucifer had to experience when he was cast out of heaven and seeing just how far the sinners of hell are willing to go. Charlie is very optimistic and wants to do what she can to minimize casualties and suffering and the same can be said about Luci considering how silly and charming he is. She's a dreamer and very idealistic just like Luci and Lillith knows that, which is why she kept her away from him and why we're probably going to see her take on a leadership or active role in the coming extermination

He became my favorite the second I saw him. We've seen the rulers of other rings and they're all so imposing in their own ways. But this man? He's just making silly little rubber ducks to cope with his depression, he wanted to do good and backfired so he decided to do absolutely nothing at all, but he still had very little hope left even tho he didn't want to admit out of fear. Isn't that relatable? Idk, I love him.

Maybe I'm over critical but here's my take on lucy. TL:DR Lucy's design and the song are fire. His relationship with charlie dont add up. He lacks pride to me and its disappointing that he doest feel any stronger than radio buck. Love his design. Honestly viz's charcter design rarely if ever miss. LOVE the song as well. Again, dont miss. Now for everything else. His relationship with charlie is strange considering their personalities. We are told its strained but we really never see a hint as to why. Everything, from lucy's and charlies personality to his over eagerness to impress her to even the flashback shows that they should have a favorable impression of each other at least. Heck the show shoots itself in the foot a little as charlie tells us that lucy reaches out not only when he needs a favor but also when hes bored. If anything it makes charlie seem like she just doesnt want anything to do with him if she can help it which goes against the song. Less plot related and more head scratching is lucy's role as a sin of pride. Doesnt really fit his current character direction to me at all. The sin of pride gets into a D measuring contest with a sinner (the D means Dad :3) and doesnt make their place on the hierarchy clear or threaten him or any of them really if anything happens to his daughter...he just doesnt FEEL prideful...which i wouldnt have a problem with if all the other sins didnt rep their sin so totally.

I Think that Lucifer has the most to gain from the success of his daughters hotel. After all, he's been stuck in hell only seeing the bad of humanity for eons. But if Charlie's hotel actually manages to redeem souls, which it does for one of em ;) , then Lucifer will finally be able to see the good of humanity. Through redemption, he can finally get around the original restriction heaven put on him. I hope that's the direction the show takes with him.

The problem is this entire arc is created and resolved in the one episode. It's not even truly an arc. It's the setup of one, and then the ending of one ten minutes later. Not even a beginning, let alone any development over time.

@@PrismOpal64 That doesn't make the paving any less awful, it's because there's only eight episodes this season they should have tried to pace things better they are still greenlit for a season two and bare minimum expecting 3 seasons from what I've heard so they don't need to rush developments as important as this so quickly.

The course of an arc has nothing to do with it's length and more to do with what it has left to explore. This arc ran it's course in one episode so there's no sense in dragging it out. All of the actual "time" necessary has already transpired offscreen. You don't start an arc at the big bang or the creatin of the universe and then explain the history of civilization just to get to the part that matters. You start as close to it's resolution as you can get away with because that keeps everything tight.

@@amanofnoreputation2164 This wasn't just started this episode though it was something introduced in the original pilot and since episode 1 if we're talking about what's definitively canon, charlie constantly references her father not having faith in her and viewing her dream in a negative light so there was clear set up for more then what they've shown Charlie's daddy issues was there since the beginning yet the payoff was anticlimactic, 7 years worth of trauma in the show time if we are talking about Charlie's pov and since the dawn of human kind for Lucifer bare minimum barely properly acknowledged before giving the most barebones conclusion in the same episode through a single song. It's incredibly unsatisfying that all it took was practically a single conversation charlie could have started at anytime had she bothered to walk up to Lucifer and talked to him face to face, the guy was practically on his knees with how much he wanted to please charlie, such an important conclusion to one of Charlie's biggest barriers in hell should've had more time to cook to make it feel actually earned instead of just feeling like a plot convenience to get into heaven especially as now whenever anything goes wrong she now has Lucifer himself to deal with any hotel based issue which removes any real stakes she could of have in the future when it could easily be solved with a phonecall now.

The thing is he is still set up to eventually betray Charlie. His depression and fall are still keyed to undercut Charlie at a future point. While being reunited with Charlie feels like a win for everyone he is going to do anything to protect Charlie if he feels she is in danger. And his experiences have basically given him PTSD to such a point that he will cut Charlie's legs out from under her if she tried to take on Heaven or the Overlords in a direct manner. THe thought of that conflict will be too much for Lucifer and the simplest solution for him will be to destroy her dreams like his were destroyed.

Honestly if you see Lucifer’s outfit as a lion tamer, and I know Vizzie and Amazon said they don’t want to use too many real lines and events from the Bible vs something more inspired by it’s lore, I love it in regards to actual Christian religion because Jesus is also referred to as a lion (who is also apparently going to be in Hazbin in later episodes) and Lucifer tempted Jesus to sin and failed. So. The Lion tamer failed to tame thee lion. Chronicles of Narina took the “Jesus is a lion” to a complete literal sense 😂
