From a cough to heart surgery: Matt's health scare and recovery

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's episode, we're veering off our usual motorhome topics to discuss something a little closer to home: Matt's recent major health scare.
Matt leads you through his journey, from those initial warning signs to the heart surgery that saved the day. But more importantly, we're here to remind you of the importance of listening to your body and not ignoring those nagging concerns.
But here's the good news: Matt's on the road to recovery, and we're thrilled to have him back in the driver's seat.
In the news, we delve into several pressing issues. First, we discuss the unexpected layoffs at Erwin Hymer, a stark contrast to the substantial investment they received just three years ago. Additionally, overnight parking has resurfaced in the headlines, with a mix of positive and negative stories making their way into the limelight.
In our Q&A segment, Matt addresses your questions regarding drinking water from onboard tanks and the necessity of an accident report form in Europe.

I can empathise. I had ‘the cough’ and feeling increasingly tired through December. Initially diagnosed as a Gord (heartburn) cough, but the medication made no difference. Eventually referred for X-rays and ECG; very fortunately I got a cancellation. When they hooked me up for ECG, they said “you’re going nowhere, we’re admitting you!” Proved to be atrial fibrillation and a high heart rate. Six nights in hospital and a concoction of medication later, they let me out, and fingers crossed, am on the road to recovery, feeling generally better. Sounds like a similar journey to you, though no surgery for me. Keep spreading the health gospel, sounds like we were both lucky; take care!

First, if you're looking for a Motorhome Dave, I'm not that man! More seriously, it's so good to hear that you got checked out before it was too late. Many many people walk around with problems which they underplay, thinking it's just one of those things, something minor, or a sign of age, but it might not be. I was about your age when I went to the doctor with a few minor ailments, and if it wasn't for having several at once I wouldn't have bothered. My GP didn't think any of them were anything but minor, till he tested my blood pressure. I realised it wasn't good when he stopped talking for 15 seconds and tested it again. What triggered that test was me telling him "I can sometimes feel my heart beating when I lie down". Turned out that I had very high blood pressure, and had had it long enough to damage my kidneys and heart which, had I not seen the doc, would have eventually ruptured. That was 12 years ago and I'm here because of that GP visit for "minor" issues.

Not just men. Women are under diagnosed with heart disease. I too had the long cough, and a much longer story to get to a diagnosis of heart failure. Almost a year, including private medicine, to this week for diagnostic scans results. Initially I had a echocardiogram, which diagnosed the heart failure with a prognosis of less than 12 months to live, with a 12 month wait to see a cardiologist, and 8 months to get the scans needed to determine what was causing the failure. Hence going private to get this reduced to 3 months. (Sadly I no longer have a motorhome budget. )

@@MotorhomeMatt I totally understand how it's a problem with men's reluctance to discuss their health, having been married for 35 years! I helped set up a Shed in our community to try and address issues around men's health and loneliness. It has provided a much needed men's space, mainly for tea and biscuits, and company. Coming from a family where both grandfathers, grandmother, father and 3 uncles and 4 cousins all died of heart attacks it's a subject we have to get into the open. Your "silent" heart attack is typical, sadly, of the type of event where we feel we shouldn't "bother" the NHS. So glad you are sorted out and able to get back into the vlogs.

I am fine now, thanks to my local hospital. Mine started with a little ‘indigestion’ that didn’t go in over 24 hrs. Called 111 and within 30 mins an ambulance was outside. My only other symptom was high blood pressure. Before I knew it, I was having an angiogram and a stent fitted. Medication has just been reduced down, so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

My optician told me a story about a patient who turned up very late for an appointment, and was about to leave and come back a couple of weeks later before the optician asked him why he was there. "I can only see the bottom half of people". Apparently he thought that this was minor! He was very quickly referred to the local hospital and then on to a specialist unit. He had brain cancer. Please be an advocate on Heart Health. Your public image can reach so many people who like both you and I, held off to get checked out. I at the last minute, only because a friend insisted, phoned an ambulance to take me to hospital. I felt absolutely awful and was very tired (lack of oxygen to the brain), I had no sooner hung the phone up and had my first heart attack. I was home alone. A stent and a triple bypass later I am fine again. More exercise, change of diet, and an adjustment in the work/life balance. If you think you are having issues with medications, check to see if you can have an alternative drug. A side affect of the blood pressure medication, Ramipril is an annoying cough (not good during COVID times). I had to ask the Doctor for an alternative and was then prescribed Candesarten which is working very well.

Parking motorhomes in SW Hampshire. One place currently free overlooking Isle of Wight and fantastic views, there are motorhomes parking all summer, and dumping toilet etc on a field along the gravel layby. County council hopefully will start charges and stop overnight camping, as the minority are spoiling it for a majority. I am a local and it is impossible to even park up there. I am hoping to purchase a motorhome. sometime this year. Would I like waste in my backyard, so Why should I do it to someone else. Another place, there are £1.5 million homes and motorhomes are parking overnight for free. Council looking at banning overnight camping again. Yes it would be nice to see a few coastal car parks allowing motorhomes parking, that currently have loos, but sadly in the summer, there are traveller groups parking up then leaving the car parks like or worse than a local tip. Yes, I have been a subscriber for quite a while now. Hope you can get fitter and stay fit and healthy
