    Great way to finish off any boat is to do final clean with alcohol to clean surface and finish with a hybrid SiO2 ceramic spray like turtle wax. Awesome result, cheap and lasts minimum 12 months in the salt. Won't yellow out...

    2 years ago I did my 24 mckee craft carolina blue, 1 side i went 600 first other side started with 1000, the side that didn't get 600 oxidized badly when the side that got a 600 grit stayed much better. Just redone the complete boat, 600, 800, 1200, 3M heavy, 3m finess + wax, got deep color and mirror shine. worth the effort.

    Currently doing this to my interior. I'm learning 😂. Stopped wet sanding at 1500 and didn't have the proper cut compound so what I did is better than it was but I'm going over it all with 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 then the last two steps of the 3M process.

    Great video. My man doing the work knows his stuff. I'm a life long boater, Miami/Ft Lauderdale area and I live on the water and keep my boat in the water. It's a 1996 Marlin 350 SF and I wax and polish the hull sides every few years but the side that is not against the dock gets a direct east sun exposure so one side of my boat is always more beat up than the other. I just hauled my boat after 2+ years in the water and did the bottom paint, engine maintenance and of course some waxing. My hull was no where near as bad as the one in this video so I did not have to do the wet sanding. But I have done it to other boats and it really makes a difference when done right. For my boat this haul out I was able to just use a good marine polish and orbital buffer and it came out nice. Next time around I will likely do the wet sanding.

    You should use a sanding indicator like dyechem. Wipe it on then sand it off to make sure you get 100% coverage. You can also use a pencil as well and just draw pencil mark then sand them off

    I would seriously give an actual sealant or even better, a ceramic coating a hard look. They protect and last far far longer. Especially the ceramic coating. Wax might last a month. Sealant will probably get you 4-6 months. Ceramic should get you close to a year.

    The tall brown bottle with a white label is 3M imperial compound. Its very expensive compound ($80 per quart) but you can do at least 3 boats this size with that bottle. The purple bottle with an orange label is 3M Heavy Cut Wax. Its basically Wax with a little bit of abrasives in it along with the wax. 3M makes some great detailing supplies but they are very pricy. You get what you pay for though

    Nice job guys, a quick question is the machine a DA or rotary? Can it be done with both? And is it possible to compound with car compound, with it work with gelcoat?

  • @henninghellerud

    @henninghellerud

    Жыл бұрын

    To give an answer; when i worked at a boat shop we used a machine that kinda rotates and oscilates/vibrates. It oscilates and vibrates more than it rotates. Idk what you call it but that is the closest description. As for compound i would use a product designed for gelcoat. And remember that if you use a machine like a polisher, dont use a lot of pressure as that can make the gelcoat cook.

Ive tried wet sanding and all grades of cutting fluids for buffing.... The only thing that had brought the original shine back was doing a repair on the bottom. Dry sanding down to 80grit and goung up through the numbers then buffing that spot looks brilliant rest of the hull......eeek! Lol Thanks my man

    Darker colors are just harder to work with because of the lights reflection. Bright colors will reflect more light and in a way hide more of the imperfections. Darker colors will make wear and tear more visible in general. I would suggest following the process in this video, with the 1000 and 2000 wet sand (with proper quality on the paper/pad) And maybe try get some compound for your color as that could make a slight difference. The most important thing is time and effort. And a decent machine to make your life easier doesnt hurt either.
