Froglet Feeding Time - Frog Watch 2021

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Once your tadpole has grown all its legs, left the water, and absorbed its tail, it's time to feed it. In this video, I discuss food options and it's time to feed my froglets.

    Do the crickets ever escape from your terrarium? Also have you ever introduced a spring tale culture? they are great the frogs will eat them but also the spring tales eat the mould and any rotting vegetation they are like a mini clean up crew.

    No, the crickets have never escaped from this terrarium, it's pretty well sealed. However, they have escaped from the box I keep them in before I feed them to the frogs. They got everywhere! All over the house! There was one living in the bathroom for weeks, we used to be able to hear it singing every night. I have never tried springtails, but several people have recommended them to me, I really should give them a try.

    Wow! Only like 3 of the tadpoles in my pond have become frogs- most of the tadpoles don’t even have anything more than little stumps- I don’t know why but every year your ones grow up faster than mine. Do you think it has something to do with the fact that yours are nice in a controlled environment whilst mine are in a pond?

  • @GregsWildlife

    Yes. There are several factors that will influence growth. Temperature is a big one, so warmer indoor tanks will always have faster growth than cooler outside ponds. There are probably other factors too, things like water depth, population density, chemical composition of the water and food availability all contribute in some way.

    Greg, thank you so much for your videos. Very inspirational. I have like 9 tadpoles with rear legs. Recently I have added life Daphne as I heard this kind of food for them. Also read that bloodworm and brine shrimp but those animals are from salty water. I don’t want to change the ph level of the water or make a harm in my pond. Any recommendation? Thank you!!

    I've used brine shrimp and bloodworm plenty of times and they've always been very popular, with no problems. But if you want alternatives, a bit of boiled white fish is very good. Or simply fish flakes will get the job done.

    Theres a couple of tadpoles in my pond that seem to be enormous in comparison to the rest. Do you know if the small ones will make it? Or is it too late in the year now?

  • @GregsWildlife

    @GregsWildlife

    There's still plenty of time for them I think. But sometimes the small tadpoles might not metamorphose until next year, they will overwinter as tadpoles.

    Recently i found those sticky weeds have tones of aphids on them. I was getting them from stingers brushing them off with a makup brush into a pot with a small amount of calci powder with D3. I was finding though the little balls on the stingers also came off with the aphids. With the sticky weed they were on the stems mostly so very quick to brush off and no rubbish coming off with um :P. Also cultivating own fruit flys and using small crickets from the shop to provide some variety. I have a few video clips on my channel of the toads eating. I have more footage but not uploaded yet. I do have a bunch of frogs but i never filmed those and they are already released as a good size now :)

    Ah, yes. I think you're talking about goose grass. I had a lot of that last year that had loads of aphids on. I don't have as much this year, so I've just been using the nettles. Cultivating fruit flies sound interesting.

  • @AdamsWorlds

    @AdamsWorlds

    @@GregsWildlife yep fruit flys are super easy, you can buy a pre setup culture of them cheap and basically when you see maggots in the mixture at the bottom you feed the flys off. The maggots then turn into flys and produce more maggots and then you can feed those off also. Happens fairly quickly and provides a constant source of food :). and yep goose grass i always forget its name lol. I was fortunate to have loads of it at the end of the garden. Not sure if this will work for you, but it did for me. I started feeding them at a set time (around 9pm) every night or every other night depending if there were left overs. I found this way i would catch them eating. They seem to like the routine. Although it might be they just like hunting when it gets darker and cooler?

    I have 2 frogs a common frog and another 1 I think it's a common toad. it's a bit bigger than common frog .I have made a tank and full with wildlife moss, sticks, ect.i am feeding them mealworms but haven't seen them eat one,but it looks like the mealworms are disappearing, any advice

    Hey, sorry for the late reply. I see you got some good replies in discord about using a mealworm dish with a lip so they can't get out, then you'll know if the frogs are eating them. I'd recommend trying banded crickets as they are one of the best frog foods in terms of nutrients.

    The best things to feed little froglets are aphids if you can find them. Or hatchling size banded crickets or flightless fruit flies. My prefered food is aphids to start with, but as the winter approaches, you'll have a hard time finding them, so hatchling banded crickets are my next choice. As the frogs grow, you can increase the size of the crickets.

    You'll find that development is always slower in outside ponds. There are many factors at play, but certainly in the colder waters of a pond they will develop slower than in the warmer waters of an indoor tank. Don't worry about it, it's normal.
