For someone from the east that grew up around nickel plate berks, reading t1s, and ebt narrow gauge, i must say this whole scene reminds me of why i fell in love with these things in the first place. Like one of bebe's books come to life. The rolling bell, the presence, and that whistle! Kudos to the people that made her live again for a while.!
For something filmed 13 years ago this is pretty good quality! The sound is great too! Thanks for catching this beautiful engine!

thanks! Was shot on Hi-8, which was the top tech at the time
I saw her very last run September 29, 2002. When 1522 pulled into St. Louis that night, the stopping whistle signal sounded like she cried. Every steam engine plays a song. I catch myself tapping my foot with the rhythm of the chug as if I were listening to jazz (no joke). I did it again watching this video.
Frisco 1522 has the same type of haunting whistle that SP&S 700 and SP 4449 have, a wonderful Hancock 3 chime long-bell whistle!
I love it!! And no diesel behind the engine even better 👍 thanks for posting it 👍👍. Have a great day everyone.
Great video. Most of my Frisco family members are buried in St. James, that's where Mom's family was from. Dad worked for them too and I love Frisco & #1522 and always will.
Frisco whistle....gives ya goosebumps.

Sorry to be so long in responding.....just getting the hang of all of this. It was shot 5-18-01 in St James MO, about an hour west of STL on the BNSF (ex-SLSF) Cuba Sub.
That whistle is so beautiful + the doppler!!

Erich Diebold Wish 4-8-4 #4500 could run again too.
I recall an excursion from Chicago to Fond du Lac behind 1522. She had a great, deep whistle, and I recall her working the grade at Horicon, WI while hauling a long consist of passenger cars with ease. She was most beautiful: I hope she'll return one day so that my kids & grandkids can see her in action.
Majestic!! Beautiful ...nothing like it......the whistle gives ya goosebumps!

I'd like to see this engine run again.
A beautiful 4-8-2 with her slsf firefly coaches
Super smart looking! Just like back in the day!
Damn! I've never seen the Frisco 1522 highballing before. Man, she can go pretty damn fast. Also, I love that whistle. It is one of my favorite whistles. I hope that she comes back out of retirement, and I hope I can get a ride on her. Long live, the Frisco 1522!
I love it, and that whistle is awesome
Great shot, 1522 is just beautiful!
Awesome gave me chills outstanding
Pole line and jointed rail love it
Beautiful
It's kinda sad that there are no future plans for 1522 to run again.
I loved that swinging bell!
That whistle gives me a chill
The way I like to see steam run. Track speed and loud. What fun!
that is a beautiful matching consist
@BenAliGtor I couldn't agree more. Nothing against SP 4449, but Frisco 1522 is just more beautiful to me.
Thats my town :D and i was at the crossing when she drove through st james!!!

Wow you really don't get the sense of speed here until it's right on top of you!
What a beautiful piece of fine art. Pity a rich person won't keep it running.
Wow! What a sound!
was there another reason why it was retired besides the insurance being too high, and how long was the St Louis steam train assocation in businness? and are there some Ex Frisco now BNSF employees that want the 1522 to run again? and whyis the NS steam program still down?
1522 was retired due to a number of factors: The first was the cost of overhauling the locomotive which SLSTA deemed too costly to undertake. The next was an increase in insurance costs to take the locomotive on public excursions. Because of these reasons, 1522 is now sitting cold and lifeless in the MofT... I hope she returns to service soon...
I like the bells on the crossings.
Nothing says get the hell out of the way than seeing her steaming through the town with that whistle wailing away!! What does it take to get a group going to raise the funds and restore one of these awesome engines anyways?? 1522 will breath fire again in my lifetime! I will make sure of it!
may?? where is this info coming from? I live in west county STL and have heard nothing on 1522. I have friends at BNSF who have heard nothing as well.
Frisco 1522 passing by crossing
Man, I can't believe they retired the locomotive in 2002! Hopefully someone who has lots of money can buy the engine and return it to service!

Erich Diebold Yes! And what about Frisco Meteor 4-8-4 #4500? It could be the next one for operational excursions too. #4500 deserves a second life for excursion service.

@@brianfalzon6739 Brian, Although this vid is now 12 yrs. old, the closest you'll ever come to the 4500 METEOR running is right there on the 1522. She is (or was) using a 4500 class steam whistle. BTW, are you from Tulsa or thereabouts?
Classic steam....how could ya not like that.
Sounds like SP&S 700

It does. It actually sounds more like SP 4449 to me.
This is awesome. Full track speed. I saw it there on its next to last excursion in 2002 at the next crossing to the left. Damn...5 years ago...I was 12.
she is a beauty! i just wish i could have caught her when she was in n texas! she will ride the rails again someday!
I guess none of the Frisco 4-8-2 locomotives will ever run again
It sounds like 611 with 3751's bell
2021 Frisco: Slumber 2007 frisco:HOOOOO HOOOOOOO
Haulin’ ash!
I'd give anything short of my life to see 1522 running flat out like a lizard drinking once again. If you're wondering, I got "flat out like a lizard drinking" from the late Steve Irwin.
@andybowe - I've heard also that 1522's flue time was running short and the cost of rebuilding her was too much for the group to handle... Still nice that she's under cover and well protected from the elements :)
man that is a hancock 7 or 9 chime whistle and gives me goosebumps

@AJ Illinois Hancock 3 chime long-bell superheated steam whistle. Several notable steam locomotives have used this type of whistle: SP&S 700, SP 4449, UP 844, UP 3985, UP 4014, N&W 611, WMSR 734, Frisco 1522, Frisco 1630, V&T 29, and R&N 425.
#BringBack1522
reeaally fun fact: She MAY go back into service again in the near future. But in order for that to happen, Insurence rates have to go down. (Insurance rates were to high, so she went back into retirement.)
I recognize that whistle from Trainz 12
Bei dem Sound kriegt jeder Dampflok Fan eine feuchte Hose. Genial !

crew fatigue was a factor. This crew had been working with this engine non-stop since 1988, using all vacations and holidays to keep her running. NS program is down because the Claytor boys died, period. All the old Southern Railway steam heads died and NS no longer found value in the program. "Needs of the business" I'm sure they would say.
Blasphemy to some , I'm sure....but I'd take this basic black Mountain over Espee 4449, any day.
