    For someone from the east that grew up around nickel plate berks, reading t1s, and ebt narrow gauge, i must say this whole scene reminds me of why i fell in love with these things in the first place. Like one of bebe's books come to life. The rolling bell, the presence, and that whistle! Kudos to the people that made her live again for a while.!

    I saw her very last run September 29, 2002. When 1522 pulled into St. Louis that night, the stopping whistle signal sounded like she cried. Every steam engine plays a song. I catch myself tapping my foot with the rhythm of the chug as if I were listening to jazz (no joke). I did it again watching this video.

    Frisco 1522 has the same type of haunting whistle that SP&S 700 and SP 4449 have, a wonderful Hancock 3 chime long-bell whistle!

    I recall an excursion from Chicago to Fond du Lac behind 1522. She had a great, deep whistle, and I recall her working the grade at Horicon, WI while hauling a long consist of passenger cars with ease. She was most beautiful: I hope she'll return one day so that my kids & grandkids can see her in action.

    was there another reason why it was retired besides the insurance being too high, and how long was the St Louis steam train assocation in businness? and are there some Ex Frisco now BNSF employees that want the 1522 to run again? and whyis the NS steam program still down?

  • @trainmaster844
    @trainmaster84415 жыл бұрын

    1522 was retired due to a number of factors: The first was the cost of overhauling the locomotive which SLSTA deemed too costly to undertake. The next was an increase in insurance costs to take the locomotive on public excursions. Because of these reasons, 1522 is now sitting cold and lifeless in the MofT... I hope she returns to service soon...

    crew fatigue was a factor. This crew had been working with this engine non-stop since 1988, using all vacations and holidays to keep her running. NS program is down because the Claytor boys died, period. All the old Southern Railway steam heads died and NS no longer found value in the program. "Needs of the business" I'm sure they would say.
