Yeah, Denken is a genuinely strong and talented mage, and his strategy (depleting their mana by forcing them to keep up a full defensive barrier for an extended time via his fire tornado) would have worked against any mage that didn't have Frieren's insane mana reserves. SPOILER And while he has a lot of special advantages going in, he does later in the manga manage to tie against a enemy that Frieren stated was almost as powerful as her (tie in the sense that they both end up with wounds that would prove fatal without treatment, but Denken survives because his opponent opts to try to flee rather than finish him off).
Frieren cant help it, shes a gambling addict at heart.
