Friedman Golden Pearl | It's Your Amp, Only Better.
Музыка
The Friedman Golden Pearl is a super transparent overdrive/boost that is perfect for pushing an amp into crunchy goodness. I've tried a boatload of OD's and this one is top tier for giving your amp that extra edge. I find it retains the core tone of your amp more than most other pedals I've tried. ⚡️

@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
@@noahguttell1953 The Pete Thorn 2x12 is awesome! It's really tough to beat a 4x12 though. If I'm playing live, I generally use a 4x12 cab. I have 2 4x12's that I keep at my practice space. One is a Marshall 4x12 with Creamback H75's on top and V30s on the bottom, the other is an EVH 4x12 with V30s. Both great cabs. Since most venues will mic up a cab anyways, there's not going to be a huge difference between a 2x12 and 4x12. I'm just used to playing through a half stack. Can't go wrong with either!

@@ZachWish Thanks so much for your thoughts. I agree totally. Also, I'd add that it's got to be a straight 4x12. I prefer it much more than a slant. The Friedman JEL-100 is also a beast, if you ever get a chance to play one. Love the content. I'd like to hear more of the music you like and also how you learn to play modern metal/rock. You are right a lot of things are 80's based or blues, but your style and technique is a different world and I don't feel it is well represented on the KZread world. I'd probably check out a Boss Katana or a Yamaha THR10. Cool little practice amps that sound great.
Zach🤘
Hey Zach, just in case you see this, is this a "transparent" OD in the way the JHS Morning Glory is (bluesbreaker?), as I'm looking at both of these. Also you've used your BB preamp to boost for a while as seen in other videos, how does that compare to this for that purpose?
What use case would you use this for in comparison to the BB preamp? I just got my first JCM800 and can’t get enough tips!
@ZachWish
2 жыл бұрын
If I were just looking to boost the front end of an amp for a little bit more gain and a tighter sound without coloring the sound at all, the Golden Pearl is better at that. The BB Preamp is pretty similar sounding but not quite as clear as the GP. The BB Preamp is cool for it's versatility. It works great as a boost, but also as an overdrive pedal and distortion pedal. Both great pedals. Thanks for checking out the video!
Hey Zach, really like your channel! Do you prefer the real mics over your Suhr Reactive Load?
@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I think the Reactive Load is amazing and does a great job, but I think there's something cool about micing up an amp for real. It's definitely a little bit trickier and it can sometimes get real damn loud, but most of the time it's not too bad. Luckily, I have a place now with no shared walls so I can crank up amps a bit. But the Reactive Load is an incredible tool and I'd happily use it on a record if micing things up wasn't an option. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@ZachWish Hello Zach, one additional question please. Have you ever tried recording 2 amp heads at the same time for one guitar sound (instead of adding a virtual amp to a DI track afterwards for thickening like you mentioned in your "recording gear 2019" video) using an aby splitter pedal/box playing both amps at the same time, and then recording one amp head mic´d in front of the cab and the other one thru the Reactive Load? And if so, how turned it out please? Thank you :)
@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
@@triclops8 Hey there. I've recorded two amps simultaneously before and it's turned out great. It can be really cool to mix two amps that complement each other well like a Marshall and Mesa for instance. I've only ever done it where I mic'd both amps, I haven't done the one amp mic'd / one amp through a reactive load, but there's no reason why that wouldn't work great as well. Generally though for a heavy sound on a record, I typically just record one amp at a time and then double track riffs. Got an album coming out in a few weeks where you can hear that technique!
@triclops8
3 жыл бұрын
@@ZachWish Thanks a lot for your answer! Oh that´s interesting, so for heavy sounds on a record just one amp at a time and then double track instead of two amps at a time and then double track. Would the later one mud things up or why do you choose to prefer it that way and don´t choose to mix different flavors there? Thank you! And interested in hearing it on your album!

The riff machine :) How do you use the boost in front of the 5150 ? Is it to bring more clarity ? There are already tons of gain with this head.
@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's not really about adding more gain as much as it is about tightening up the amp. A lot of amps like a 5150 or Dual Rectifer will have an excess of low end / low-mids. Boost pedals typically cut a bit of that low end in addition to adding a bit of cut/aggression. I definitely dig this pedal with the 5150. Thanks for checking out the video!
@sepultubob
3 жыл бұрын
@@ZachWish Hey thanks for your answer. I knew for the rectifier but the 5150 seems to be mostly used on it's own. Gojira runs straight into it for instance. When I played it it sounded pretty full. I noticed a "swarm of bees" feel to it sometimes (the low mids ?). It probably depend on the settings, I had it running without a lot of gain and it was ok.
Why would amps like the ones you have even need a boost pedal? Isn’t the BE able to sound like this without the GP pedal? Cheers.
@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
I'd say you're right in that the BE-100 Deluxe doesn't really need a boost, but I figured I'd show the pedal into the amps that I had around. The 5150, JCM800, and other high gain amps like a Dual Rectifier actually work really well with a boost! Those amps will often have an excess of low and low-mid frequencies that can sound a little flubby if you're trying to play tight, riffy stuff. A boost like the Golden Pearl, Tubescreamer, or similar overdrives often cut a little bit of that low end out which really tightens up the sound and feel of the amp as well as giving a bit of extra gain. Give it a shot sometime if you get the chance. Thanks for checking out the video!
But how does that accordian sound through it?

@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
The Golden Pearl doesn't have the same midrange boost as a Tubescreamer. This pedal is a much more even sounding boost across all frequencies. You can still shape the overall sound with the tone & voicing controls, but they're different enough that I could see owning both. For what it's worth, I really liked the tones I was getting with the Golden Pearl and the JCM800 in this video. Thanks!

Thanks a bunch! I learned to play guitar by figuring out songs that I really liked over the years and I still do that to this day when I come across a tune that catches my ear. I mainly try to focus on writing my own music these days, but sometimes when I get stuck in a rut, it can be really helpful/inspirational to learn another tune by ear and sort of dissect someone else's approach. I also played in a cover band back in 2008 and learned a TON of songs for that. Just a fan of the riff! Thanks so much for checking out the video!

@ZachWish
3 жыл бұрын
They are both great pedals, but if I could only choose one, I'd probably go with the Buxom Boost. It's a bit more flexible with a 3 band EQ and the Tight knob to shave off some lows. They're both super transparent, but the Golden Pearl is probably the more transparent of the two. I think the GP is pretty magical with Marshall style circuits, but if you have an amp that has an excess of low end like a Mesa Rectifier or certain Fender circuits, the Tight knob on the Buxom Betty is going to come in pretty handy. Hope that's helpful and thanks for watching!
