The only part that bothers me is him coming back after saying no more almost has no impact behind it, other than that fucking amazing remix

I have a theory that, by saying "no more", he WAS done with the song. He also wanted his suffering to end. But the Unown didn't like that their puppet was rebelling. So they possessed him. Completely. They forced him to keep singing. His expression during phase 2 shows he's still aware of what's just happened, his fear and dread at having just lost what little life and humanity he had left.
