___
This two-out scenario was the result of a low pull followed by an AAD fire (CYPRES), and the skydiver reacted quickly to cutaway the main while it still had separation from the reserve. Here's what the jumper had to say about the incident:
"The jump was done at a DZ that I was visiting for the first time, I attended a standard DZ briefing. The elevation of the DZ is 2000 feet higher than my home DZ and jump run was 10,000 feet instead of 13,000 feet. The first jump of the day was from a helicopter with an exit altitude of 5000 feet. This jump went off flawless. However, something must’ve happened on that jump with my audible altimeter because on the jump in the [two-out] video the audible never made a sound. I found myself on a sit fly jump having lost altitude awareness because of no sound from the audible, and my “internal clock” hadn’t gone off because it didn’t register that I have less free fall time given the lower jump run altitude of the DZ. At 2200 feet, I realized where I was and immediately transitioned from a sit to belly while deploying my main. By that point I was already too low and didn't have line extension until below 1,000 feet, which resulted in a Cypres fire and cutting away my main.
Things to consider:
1. Jump with a backup audible altimeter
2. Although not common practice, might be worth resetting your audible after any non-standard skydive such as a heli jump or hot air balloon jump.
3. Practice your emergency procedures regularly and know your hard deck.
4. Don’t pull low... unless you're already low ;)

    As one about to begin AFF, and having watched lots of skydiving videos to learn, should he have evaluated the dual opening longer ? His altitude error notwithstanding. I'd love one or two skydivers to chime in...would you have done the same? I recall 3 configurations from a malfunctions video, biplane, side by side & downplane. Was this a downplane? Is that impossible to change and/or dangerous to fly?

  • @ov4457

    @ov4457

    3 жыл бұрын

    He had great reflexes so he was fine cutting the main away while the two canopies werent yet close to each other. However in the textbook version of this malfunction where you get an accidental reserve opening under a working main you arent supposed to cut it away because most people will not be fast enough to cut it away while the canopies are still apart. When they are touching you’ll be better of just leaving them because if you try to cut the main away it has a high chance of entanglement and then you are properly fucked. I myself would have probably just left it and hoped for the best but what this dude did was not wrong either. Would recommend for everyone to avoid this situation though

    in my opinion the risk of a downplane from having two out is greater than the risk of the canopies becoming entangled after the cutaway. In a biplane I would keep the canopies, but if it became a side-by-side, I would chop. even if they are touching, you can use a riser to steer the main away from the reserve to create separation before cutting away.

  • @garethpepperell594

    @garethpepperell594

    4 жыл бұрын

    A parachute can take a few seconds to open. Whilst its opening your decelerating. Sometimes you can have a malfunction where the parachute wont open properly meaning you will have to pull your reserve. In freefall youre falling at about 170ft per second. If you open at 1000ft that gives you about 7 seconds for your parachute to fully open and you to take control of it until your at 0ft, thats if it opens properly. The reason you open high up is that if it takes longer to open, or you need to open the main, you still have time. Last thing you want is to chance a low opening and your main parachute dosnt open.

    control is an issue, they can fly into a range of different positions and may change from one position to another in flight. One position is a downplane , which still has you heading earthward too fast. He either had or had the beginnings of a downplane. He had little altitude to play with so reacted promptly to get rid of his main and settle under one canopy. If the canopies had arranged themselves one in front of the other he would have just landed the pair. He was landing out (way off the airport) so having one controllable canopy is very important to avoid obstacles.

    because they separate and fight each other in either a side by side formation which would be at both your 9 and 3 o'clock's so you wouldn't have any fabric above your head to slow your fall, or a downplane which is one canopy above you and one below, this will pull you to the earth at a very high speed. This type of malfunction is literally just called "two canopies out" if you want to look it up and read about it.

    Yea I wouldn’t say never cut away... but considering he had a fully functioning main with and reserve with no line twist, and being so close to a dz with not many obstacles.. I DEFINITELY would have tried to ride it out rather than risking losing a few grand. Unless they start working against each other, you’re gonna fall slower with more fabric anyways
