Freud (2020) Netflix Original Series Review

Ойын-сауық

Sigmund Freud uses his knowledge and expertise in neurology to solve crimes in 1880s Vienna in the Netflix original series 'Freud'. This mystery has elements that might be supernatural, but is there a natural explanation to what is going on? Thanks for checking out my review!

I minored in psychology in college and did quite a large semester paper on Freud. Although the events are not historically accurate, his demeanor and personal flaws are quite so. He was a cocaine addict who notoriously went on binges where he didn't sleep or eat in pursuit of his obsessions within psychology; his strained familial relationships, tenous status during his residency at the mental hospital and long and laboring engagement to Martha are also based in historical fact. I enjoyed this show very much and liked the mix of the supernatural, psychological, and crime story. I thought it was extremely well-acted and thought the cinematography and lighting really added to the feel. But to each his own, I suppose.

I was kind of disappointed when the supernatural elements were introduced, I was hoping for a good old psychological horror story... But I kept watching because I live in Vienna and in spite of the historical inaccuracies they got a lot of things right, like the guys with the fencing scars (rite of passage into student associations) on their way to become future Nazis ("careful Clara, a jew!"), the obvious divide in the medical community, the soap makers living in the sewers (I went exploring there myself about 10 years ago) and then when I saw the Taltosz symbols I remembered seeing similar things in the trees in a clearing on Danube island. We figured it was some magical beliefs but now I want to read more about this.

I don't understand why most reviewers are saying that Freud was trying to solve a murder mystery. The plot of the show is obviously one of crime thriller but Freud was not acting like a detective. He was discovering the science of hypnosis, working like a therapist and the other characters just happened to cross his path in doing so. And by chance he found Fleur to be an ideal client / case study for discovering his technique. That's it. He was never interested in solving the crime but in knowing what lied underneath the psyche of Fleur and other characters too. He was finding these people as appropriate "cases" for his experimentations using hypnosis technique. So much wrong review is being made by people on KZread who do not seem to have any knowledge about Freud.

You've got to completely suspend what the truth in history is when watching this. It's purely for entertainment. It's not really meant to be terribly historically accurate. I don't know a lot about Freud, but even I knew that. I am loving it.

I realized something, at the far end where they were showing the cast’s faces, the guy with the moustache was the only one crying. He was pouting, almost like he was in distress. I think that it’s because he’s the only “normal” one so he was the only one to show his true emotions. I also think that the little girl’s mother has something evil in her, not evil like a demon but she is not normal, she had a smirk at the end which really caught me off guard not gonna lie😂 Hope that I can get your opinion on that, great vid💕

Yh I found that a bit weird too! But then I realized it COULD BE because his friend (Kiss) "died"/"vanished"/"turned into a demon" a bit before that. But I don't know.. all those faces could be related with the "overall emotion/reaction" of those characters along the whole tv show.. in that way it couldn't be because his friend disappeared.. About that little girl's mother, I don't think she is evil or any other thing besides just purely crazy. I mean, she saw her sweet young daughter being mutilated and staying almost in a state like she was dead, all this to be known, just a few days past, by her other son, who was young beutifull and with a promising carrer (I think, i mean he was studying medicine. And he was the teacher's favorite soo), who a bit later is found dead by suicide. With all this happening so fast on her life and her not having any help/advices by other people, I believe it made her lost her mind mb not completely but at least some part of it.. that's why she was with that unexpectable smile at the end, if she was crying for example I think it would be so normal that would indicate everything was somewhat good with her (in mind states) + To add the importance of her reason to lose her mind, we know her son and daughter were VERY close, not only by what we see on the show but too cuz she even says he used to hold her and say she was his little doll, so I guess she would NEVER suspect her son would yo that to her and went with forced denial of a truth.

Still about the Porchascher crying at the end. U said u believe it's cuz he is the only "normal" person cuz he is showing his true emotions. I don't really think he necessarily the only "normal" just because of that.. I mean, for example the doctor/boss at the hospital, he was with a neutral face looking down and the to us. I believe he's emotions with the overall story that occurred would be somewhat that, cuz the only thing that happened to him and could have more weight to his conscious was his best student suicide, and honestly I doubt that would make him cry, at the most just a tear or two, nothing like Porshacher.. I'm talking about the doctor cuz I don't remember well the other ones xd the little girl and her brother obvs weren't "normal" for example xd

You do not care, which is your good right, and I bet, that I would have enjoyed the whole very weird horror story much more, if I didn't, either. Firstly, I would say that this series should not have been called "Freud". I am pretty sure the series is not even remotely faithful to the historical Freud and therefore the title is misleading. Secondly, I would not consider the series cerebral. I incorrectly presumed it would be (I suppose due to its title). It relies more on shock value. I like to start what I finish so I watched the whole series. Not a waste of time but if I could turn the clock back I'd try something else instead. Overall, not terrible.

I loved the series as well! I knew about Freud's cocaine use, but didn't Freud also use it on a close friend in an attempt to cure his morphine addiction? Although, cocaine was used for many common ailments back then! Here was my original post I made while watching it day before yesterday: I just finished episode #1 of Freud and I love it! Not quite sure what that says about me 😂 Maybe its because I have a psychology background and overall fascination with psychology in general. The actor who plays Freud is great! Although the series is mostly fictional, there are "some" truths. I found some interesting observations in the first episode. The tactile "tapping" and the rapid eye movements back and forth (both when done bilaterally are actually a very common therapy used now called EMDR and it can be beneficial for patients with trauma when done correctly by a trained psychologist or trauma therapist. Freud did not create EMDR though. Marsha Linehan created it. Interestingly, like hypnosis, EMDR seems to work with the unconscious mind, bringing into consciousness the repressed thoughts and feelings that must be experienced again in order to release their energetic hold on the person. Also, cocaine in that time period was used frequently for surgery and all sorts of common ailments. Freud was fascinated with cocaine and abused it for many years. I "think" he was initially drawn to it to help a fellow friend "cure" his morphine addiction. *I enjoyed the series quite a bit! Very dark and disturbing, but incredibly fascinating and compelling to watch!

I'm a hypnotherapist & Freud didn't seem odd to me at all. I do get the focus on hypnotism, being the facinating aspect of the history of Freud's analysys. Freud did discover depth psychology and psychoanalysis actually from the practices of hypnosis, mesmerism, and earlier esoteric disciplines. To understand Freud it helps to understand who he was.His addiction to cocain being one of them. At the same time cocaine was considered a type of medicine back then. The realms of hypnosis is deep & one can find it mysterious at time. The Austria Hungarian war was the backdrop of Freud the series. P.S: I'm happy to tell you Hypsosis has healed many of my clients ailments, smoking being one of them. The word hypnosis has been misused also, so I do understand the confusion. Take care be well y'all 🙏❣️

Those who know Freud or have knowledge or training in psychoanalysis or who have seen the excellent film A Dangerous Method will say to themselves, but what does this series have to do with Freud? The trailer is misleading ... What a disappointment! Especially since Freud with Totem and Taboo questions the whole relationship of the father or of tradition or religion, and that faced with modernity, the assimilation of Jewish citizens, neuroses, impulses, and others, are linked to this feeling of guilt to pass from this superstitious stage of the tradition of sin and hell held by the shackles of bigotry or a worn-out puritanism, opposed to the rationality that Freud saw as a perfect rationalist and follower of scientism the time. Indeed, this series is rather a mixture of Sherlock Holmes, Interview with a vampire, the film The Exorcist, or even Minority Report !! And this story with Salome or Fleur is only pure fiction ... For the followers of satanism, blood, gloomy atmosphere like black sect, they will have their account ... But I suspect that the malicious minds will make a link implicit between Judaism and black magic (esoteric currents) to discredit all of Freud's work, to make fun of him as well as psychoanalysis presented as charlatanism or even shamanism, based on legends and superstitions of the afterlife. .. without forgetting the fixation on absolute evil in the sexual act, hated by the Christian Church as a sin from the pulpit ... and when we know that the extreme right and the neo-Nazi movements are in full swing in Austria , place where the film was shot ... We can ask questions about this series and the implicit or unconscious motivations of the director ...
