Fretwork on the Scroll Saw

In this video I demonstrate the way I prepare a piece for cutting on the scroll saw and take you through from start to finish. I will do more videos of cutting and ultimately assembly on this fretwork box.

Thank you for watching. Seeing the project come to life is one of my favorite parts of cutting fretwork. I am working on another fretwork project I hope to share soon.

I really loved your video, a suggestion would be a good over head shot so we can see how your are cutting the pattern. A GoPro will fit the bill nicely. Overall great pacing and was really enjoyable to watch.

I usually cut like sides together so it doesn’t take so long. Good job!

Great video. Since you asked for comments, I don't think you needed to put the cutting out of the pattern. I just fast forwarded passed that part but the first part of the video was informative. Looking forward to more of your videos.

Thank you very much for watching and leaving feedback. I appreciate it. My thought behind including it was it gave an opportunity to mention leaving a small width of blank paper outside the pattern to prevent the pattern from separating during cutting. I understand where you're coming from and won't be including much on pattern prep save for a video I am planning where I test and demonstrate different methods of it.

I liked your video. As a suggestion, when your filming the cut out position your camera more towards the back of your saw as quite often your hand blocked the view. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback. I am still working things out. I guess the cutting is more interesting than my hand :)

Why didn’t you stack cut the identical pieces? Otherwise nice video :)

That's definitely the right decision and what I did for the other piece. It just didn't occur to me at the time. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I’m new to scroll saw and I enjoyed ur work. Can you list the specific tools you use?!

Hello! First, welcome to the hobby! I have a lot of videos on a variety of different projects, tools and techniques. The main tool I recommend for scrollers after the scroll saw is a band saw followed a planer for bringing wood to thickness. A drill press is nice but not critical. Rotary tools like the dremel are great, too. It depends on the type of work you want to do but these will work on all types of projects.

What type of blade do you typically use for fretwork?

Never more than a 3, typically a 1 or a 2/0. Usually a reverse tooth. Brands are generally olson or flying dutchman

I noticed you broke 2 blades, if you don't mind me saying that can be because you are using too much pressure (pushing the piece into the blade) or turning the corners too quickly, let the saw do the work. Otherwise a very nice job.
