It’s not my favorite, but I go back to it all the time.

About 15 years ago My family were guests at a Korean dinner and there was featured another guest who entertained us with an amazing erhu performance. I thought I could make one myself and did albeit a more simpler version (constructing the six sided box with oak flooring was no problem, it was gluing the animal skin that had me nervous...snake skin is traditionally used but I removed the skin from a junked pair of bongos and that worked great!) I did buy a bona fide erhu bow and I do occasionally fiddle around with it but I'm definitively not an erhu player

Right. It is an acoustic drum (banjo) with python skin typically and very simple. An interesting instrument

It's just lovely that you are winding your own pickups, so now you can make whatever is needed for any kond of instruments you make.

This is a really cool instrument, and I love how you've made each one a little bit different. Fun to see traditional instruments made in a non-traditional fashion. Thanks for sharing!

I don’t remember if I commented on your older videos in any detail, but the design of my own instruments is heavily inspired by the erhu. Unlike others who have attempted to convert a guitar-like instrument into something that can be bowed like a cello, I enjoyed the brainstorming process of placing a fretboard under the strings of an erhu, which conveniently has plenty of room for it. I’m still working on the idea to make it easily removed or swapped out with other fingerboards, either fretless or with custom non-Western scales. Anyhow, I love seeing your process. Nice work!

When some old woodworker passes away and the family is left with cleaning out their tools and hoards, the wood does not register as having value when next to a bunch of tools they gotta figure out how to sell... and there's already a dumpster in the driveway...

What a lovely instrument Sir. How do you deal with picking a scale length, then appropriate fret spacings for something like this? Please ignore me if this is a dumb question. I know there are calculators available for common guitar scales, but did you pick a scale length out of the air, or is there a recognised scale length for some exotic instrument like this?

Scale is based on what the musician wants, really. Feet calculators can do any scale length you can imagine and solve the math quickly and easily.

Tim I ask this with peace and love but did you tune before recording the music for this video? 😭

I bought a cheap one from ebay for size and scale reference and communicate with the player about what they want and need.

It's called "taste." Everyone's is different. Some people love it, some people hate it - some people went out of their way to buy the recording from me. And that's not only OK - it's great! If we all liked the same things the world would be very boring and vanilla.
