    Good video. I picked up the hobby again about 4 years ago. I set a tank from my childhood knowledge of keeping fish. They all ended up sick, some died I took the rest back the store. They treat sick fish. They even offer a service of treating sick fish. Any ways. I went home and got on KZread cuz google failed me. You helped me pick myself up and dust myself off. I jumped into planted tanks, I learned from you how to set and cycle the tank. I have grown so much. I have just recently up graded my filter game. I run a fluval 207 on my 40 gallon turtle tank. It handles just well! But that is not my only filter. It is planted with plants for her to eat Wich she chooses not too. Also am growing out a pumpkin seed sunfish too. He needs to moved to the pond soon. He is about 7inches. He is a 💯 wild and there no intentions of keeping him. The weather changed quick and I did not want to throw him out to certain death. I do not feed him pellets or frozen live only and he has to catch it on his own and it do not make that easy. Sorry got off track. Thank you for all your info Cory. You have helped me out in so many ways.

    "I gotta explain a canister filter, cuz some people might not have seen a canister filter before." THANK YOU! So many of the "tutorial" videos on youtube include the line, "I don't need to explain this, you all know what it is" or "You'd all probably seen this before." It's really frustrating. Thanks for taking the time to explain stuff for the newbies!

    You've just got to take this guy seriously. He makes his living from selling aquarium products. It would make so much more sense form a commercial point of view for him to tell us that undergravel filters and sponge filters are rubbish and what you really need is the latest all singing all dancing Carlos Fandango canister filter at 20 times the price...... but he doesn't. There's no repeat sales for him in a sponge filter; you buy it, use it and that's it. It never breaks down and just works for years.

    The Sponge Filter requires weekly maintenance where are the 40 gallon canister filter may only require three to six months of maintenance so basically the more you spend on a filter may give you longer run time without maintenance

    You saved my fish's life! I was given a decent sized fantail a little over a month ago and a 6.6 gallon tank. This was my first fish and it was a rescue fish, just abandoned on a pet store counter. I was talked into it, brought the fish home and did the best I could. I started researching how to care for it and did everything I thought I should including water changes several times a week because the water was so bad. Still, the water was stayed bad and the poor fish just looked like it was slowly dying. I had just bought a bigger tank (20 gallon long) and was hoping that would make it all better but I realize now that it wouldn't have helped my issues. I thought that filtering was just about straining bad things out of the water so I was getting rid of the filter cartridge every water change, cleaning off the sponge in tap water and cleaning off all surfaces of the filter (Tetra Whisper PF10 Filter) that I could reach. I had no idea that filtering was more about the bacteria than anything else. I ran to the store and bought Fluval Spec Biomax Filter Media (it looked the only size small enough) and an intake sponge. I also bought some beneficial bacteria. Three days later, my water is crystal clear and perfect! The fish is happy and active again. I had already gotten a Aqueon QuietFlow 30 for the new, larger aquarium but took that back and got a Fluval Aqua Clear. Now instead of dreading set up the new take and expecting failure, I'm excited about getting this set and enjoying my little fish!

    One of the most important things you can do is monitor your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate with reliable test kits. By doing so you can adjust the filtration and water changes to maintain safe levels without spending money needlessly.

    I'm pretty late to the party, but I was in the same boat, minus my fish being rescues, just wasn't properly informed by the employees at PetSmart. After my first three fish deaths, I started doing lots of homework, now I'm maintaining three healthy tanks and a wife yelling at me for spending so much money due to mts lol. I have a lot of stress in life nowadays, like most people I'd imagine, and the beauty in my tanks takes me to a place of peace and serenity, so she's just gonna have to deal with it, lol.

    I am not a fan of canister filters. mechanically the sponges and filter pads clogg up and it really is a pain to maintenance. I own a marineland canister and I threw away all of the mechanical media and used ever tray with bioballs. I never have to clean it now. I use another filter for my mechanical filtration on its own.

I love them and recently started using sponge filters and they are great too. The more you spend does not mean the best thats for sure.

    I'm so glad I revisted this. I just got a 75 gallon and in one of my Facebook groups, immediately I was bombarded that my current filter on my 60 gallon would not work. To go bigger! It's a Eheim 2215. I bought the filter bigger in case I upgraded tank size. Now I'm there. Not to mention, I'm only going to have 2 blood parrots in the tank and they will be babies when I get them. So I have plenty of time to decide if my canister filter is not enough. Thanks again for an informative video!

    Aquarium Co-Op, I have been watching a lot of your videos. Also, watched another vey popular youtubers videos as well. Please be honest. If you bought the sponge filter with a hole on both sides. Why can't you just use a rubber band or something to close up the other side. Is there a reason, or are you trying to sell filters too ;) I know that came off as a snide remark, but obviously you do know a lot more about this subject than I do. So I really want to know if there is a rason for it.

    You pay the man a compliment by stating you watch his videos, (for free I might add) but counter it by making it clear you also watch other videos here on YT.....oh no!! is Cory supposed to be afraid that your going to steer all your fish business elsewhere? Besides that, he goes through all the effort to make incredible videos to help us, and he has a sponge filter idea and gets them custom made and sells them. He doesn't TRY to sell them, HE SELLS THEM. Just look at his site....sold out!! Why be so suspicious that he's really running some illegal single - holed sponge Ponzi scheme in order to rob you of your precious dollars. It's a dang sponge that adds surface area. I see no scam here ;)

    Wow, I've watched a LOT of fish related youtube videos and this is by far one of the best so far in terms experience, knowledge, common sense, rational thought! etc etc. I've found that there are SOOOO many opinions because, like you say there are so many variables!! I have fancy goldfish which i know are messy ,in fact one youtuber called them 'Filthy' which i though was unnecessarily rude! So i unsubscribed on behalf of my Goldfish!!! So quite a while ago, shortly before my brain exploded from so much contradictory information!! I just decided to get hold of a very large canister filter and fill it with as much media as humanly possible!! I think it does 1000L per hour so definitely filtration overkill! ha ha. But my Filthy little fancies are swimming around in crystal clear and more importantly good quality water thanks to all of that lovely bacteria and surface area 😀👍

    I appreciate this video. Maybe this would be a separate topic but circulation/flow as a part of the filtration is a huge concept. I have used all kinds of filtration as well and use several currently. My findings have been that canister filters are most superior in their surface area to circulation ratio. Yes a sump can hold more media and water volume but I've found tanks with sumps have a harder time managing or eliminating dead spots. Canisters seem to do a better job. Waste management is the name of the game as you've said! Thanks!

    Finally someone honest and straight forward. 20 years ago a had a beautiful aquarium full of plants and happy fishes and my filter was an hang on back filter like the one you are showing in the video. But then I got convinced that the canister filters where the way to go, so I switched and since then had more fish death, weaker plants and I hate the trouble it is to clean. But I still have that old hang on back filter. So I’m thinking, bye bye canister filter, and welcome back hang on back filter. With a little pimping up, it will be better than before and still so easy to clean!! Thanks so much for the great tips.

    For several years (70's) I owned a freshwater aquarium shop. At that time under water filters were most common and we computed "inches" of fish based on bottom surface. Worked well until someone allowed something to get out of hand (fish, food, etc) then it was a compete restart and loss of everything. I'm about to retrieve my old love of fish and appreciate your very clear update on my "old" technology.

    I"m 50 and way back at 12 years old I saved for a year to get my first tank (29 gal). Since I've had set ups from 10-125 gal mostly fresh but 2 salts. We had kids and we've not had tanks for 15 years (my wife is also into the hobby). We are getting ready to get back into it! Your filtration video has revolutionized my understanding of filters, thank you. Enjoyed the various plant videos as well. Subscribed and look forward to more and intend to support ypur business. Just came across "Aquarium co op" on a internet search.

    After watching this and the other video about pimping your filtration, I put intake sponges on all my power filters on my 3 tanks. I'm already seeing a difference as far as what gets trapped on the intake sponge before it even enters the filter.

    MeinnameistDreck I used to use intake sponges but stopped because they get clogged rather quickly, plus they’re in the water so when you take it out to clean it every few days to a week, it pollutes the water even when using a net. Much easier and cleaner to have the sponge externally in the filter in my opinion.

    Petsmart sells sponge media for their Top Fin brand submergable filter that would probably work great for covering the intake. Only one side has the hole because it is made to hold carbon. It is also a little smaller.

    First, I couldn’t agree more about the vagueness of what companies say their filters are rated for. It’s a sales gimmick to be able to sell 4-5 various sizes. And your advice for a pre-filter is absolutely spot-on. With that being said, we have some fundamental differences in our approach to filtration and beliefs about its function. I say the following with a sense of friendly disagreement and the knowledge that I’m a long-time Aquarium Co-op superfan: filtration is certainly not preference-based in the way you imply. People do have specific needs they want met (clear water for aesthetics, healthy water for fish) but the way to go about getting it is not simply a choice between whether a person likes red or blue. If it was, your complaint about filtration standards and what filters are rated for would be irrelevant (who cares what’s on the box, it’s all about what you like. Do you like the look of a sponge better, go ahead and get that! Do you like the look of a bigger canister filter? Go ahead and buy that one! Same difference!) Yes, bigger filters might be a waste of money, absolutely. If the hobbyist doesn’t know what they are doing, and never maintains the filter they have (even if they’re running 4 fx6s on a 55 gallon tank) they will ruin their water and fish. A serious aquarist can get by on less filtration if that filtration is meticulously maintained and narrowly targets specific filtration needs. You may be able to keep 500 tetras with a single well-colonized sponge filter (however, those 500 tetras may produce the amount of waste of several big fish. The number of fish is irrelevant, it’s the amount of waste produced that’s important. How much were they being fed? etc. I would like to see you put 500 Oscars or discus in the same setup successfully. It really appears you believe that it would work fine). I think it’s misleading to recommend that approach to beginner hobbyists. If you really believe in it, I would at least recommend in a future video addressing how much water you change daily, how long it takes to successfully colonize a sponge to the level it will handle a specific bio load, how often the sponge needs to be cleaned (and how), how much waste it will process and the equivalent number and size of fish that would produce it, and what water quality a person can expect to see as a result (water may be free from ammonia but how will it look? This is important to the majority of people out there who have a single tank and just want it to look nice as well as be healthy for the fish in it). We’ve discussed this before and I think we just disagree on it: the reason big wholesalers, etc. are using sponge filters is a) because they are easy to use and for the price store a huge amount of bacteria and b) the fish are fed next to nothing and have been fed next to nothing for at least 3-7 days before they arrive (therefore they produce less waste than fish under normal circumstances), and c) most importantly for huge systems where fish are being raised to maturity, they may be doing huge water changes multiple times a day. The sponge filters are basically unnecessary because the main method of waste elimination is through water exchange. Say you have 100-200 well-fed discus in a 500 gallon tank. Are you seriously suggesting that a single sponge filter can effectively eliminate the volume of waste they produce without the addition of massive water changes? Although you criticize the filter companies for being vague about how much a given filter can handle, I don’t really see you clearing the mystery up much. You definitely illustrated how to supercharge a filter, but that doesn’t give a beginner any concrete idea of how much it will handle. Did adding the sponge to the intake mean a person can safely add a big fish like an Oscar or maybe only a tetra to a tank? I realize that this video was only meant as a general introduction, but I think a better video would give people a rule of thumb they can use when deciding what filtration they need. It’s massively complicated, but I think it would be possible for a person of your level of knowledge.

    In a nutshell, keeping an 'aquarium' can be so drop- dead simple it's really funny. And yeah, it can be so incredibly complicated that even a genius could fail at it; natural sciences, physics and tech, you can go crazy. 'In a nutshell' you guy's, keeping a fish is just like keeping anything else. You learn about what it needs. Whatever it is. Sometimes it does sound like brain surgery, it's not. I've been keeping every kind of aquatic animal for 52 years. I've been through it all. Sometimes things just seem real complicated when they're really not. Believe me, watching this hobby change and grow from 1968 to 2020 has been truly unreal. The very basics of what your animal's needs are to thrive are no more in place now than half a century ago; we're all just offered many more avenues to get to the same damn place. In fact success by hobbyists before even long before my time was un-explained; things which now are common knowledge. Before you freak-out on theories, technologies, everyone and thier brother's opinion's (it gets unbelievably crazy complex - and expensive) just learn the BASIC needs of your organism. Then you can play all you like with how you'd like to 'decorate the house'. Just another hobbiest's opinion.

    Doesn't water flow make a difference? Would a sponge filter running with air be as efficient as one running with a power head? Also, same goes for OTB filters. Wouldn't the water flow be higher than a sponge filter running with air? If they both had the same surface wouldn't the OTB filter be more efficient?

  • @MirrimBlackfox

    @MirrimBlackfox

    7 жыл бұрын

    The sponge filter running with air is creating water flow, the air basically creates a vacuum behind it as it flows up the tube pulling water through the sponge and up the tube. Any loss of efficiency between air driven, and power driven, is made up by aeration aiding the bacterial growth.

    Question: how quickly will bacteria start to die into a power outage?

  • @redstone1999

    @redstone1999

    3 жыл бұрын

    Lack of air in filter canister/sump will suffocate beneficial bacteria. I had a 12 hour outage and my 206 smelt like my septic tank. I did not need a microscope to know that decomposition was happening. I disconnected filter before power came on and gave it a good cleaning with clean water. Now I will just remove lid and add an air stone to bottom. This will keep bacteria alive until power is back. I have battery back-up for air pumps. Air pumps are low powered and easy to save tanks with solar/gas generators/grid powered battery bank with inverter. This is why I now have at lest one sponge-air filter in every tank (regardless if I have other filtering system for them). My 25 watts of air pump means it needs only 600 watts/day. This can be handled with 150 watts of solar panels and 2 car batteries/ 1 deep cycle battery and a 50 watt inverter. One less thing to worry about in a power outage.

    Patience is the most valuable aquarist resource. Seen lots of friends going with expensive filters in new tanks, that they keep over stocking, moving around decoration, trying to speed up the cycle or what not. Is not about how much can you spend in a filter, but how you use your resources and let them mature peacefully to their full potential.
