I would be talking to the landscaping company about future sales/orders. You could be growing and supplying them in bulk amounts to make the drive worthwhile. A guaranteed customer is worth a lot. Of course you are not set up for bulk orders but if it is a guaranteed order it might be worth doing so.

I would have sold them less developed but in bud in soil and in a pot, so that people could make their own arrangements. Like 3/in a pot covered with moss. Or that You could plopp into windowbokses or containers outside if You live in a more moderate climate than mine.

It’s just water. The bulbs have everything the tulips need especially if you treat them like an annual 🙂

I unfortunately don’t. It’s not very difficult especially if you have a wax melter but there are a lot of great KZread videos out there on candle making! I’ve hired someone else to take care of the soap and candle making for the last few years! It was getting to be overwhelming

How long were the bulds chilled for and how long were they in water?

Each variety has a different chilling period and I get them from the supplier chilled. The total hydroponics succession turnover is about 6 weeks.

The class is called the tulip workshop. The forced tulip / sustainability piece is one I had to think long and hard about. The cons are that the bulbs are grown/harvested in Holland, those need to be refrigerated and shipped and of course they are sprayed. The pros are that you can fit 500-700 in a given crate which is much more than fitting grown stems that ship internationally. International stems are usually also sprayed multiple times and need more cooling to preserve them. Taking all of this into account and the fact that vday tends to be very monocrop (roses), I decided that for myself, I could sleep at night knowing net-net, it was still a more sustainable option. I hope this makes sense!

Very fair- I could have potentially foraged on the property. I would have love some ilex berries but didn’t want to use anything imported and couldn’t find anything local

Hi, new subscriber from Germany here. Which varieties do you use? Is it possible to get varieties which can be planted out again for the next years? Tulips are quite expensive here.

Hi there! All tulips hypothetically are perennials but because of the way that cut flower farmers harvest them, they are unlikely to regenerate fully to have another crop that produces quality blooms for cutting. However, I have seen people wait 2-3 years for the bulb to regenerate for another good cutting or reuse the bulb in landscaping. If you don't mind me asking, how much are bulbs going for in Germany? I would have thought that being so close to the Netherlands, bulbs may be cheaper (though offset by fresh tulips also being cheaper too).

Have you tried ordering through Eurobulb or Peter Nyssen? There are several other companies, I managed to buy 180 double tulip bulbs for under 15 euros at Farmer Gracy’s Black Friday sale. I’m in Denmark and they ship

I think I'm getting disillusioned with farmers markets or maybe I'm just salty lol. $15 doesn't seem too terrible at first blush but since you're eating the sales tax it makes them basically $14. Plus you're providing a jar which is probably like a buck or two. Checking online FTD has 15 basic single red and white tulips in a (cheap) jar delivered with taxes and fees for *$60.* Is it just me? Lol am I expecting too much? Another off topic. It's amazing how much space you gained after the hot water heater and boiler came out. Speaking of I had a dumb moment where I couldn't figure out why a ranch style house would have more basement space. Are you guys gonna get hit with this cold weather thing? It's supposed to drop to 10° F here which is pretty cold for us.

Lol it’s not just you who is salty. I am too! A local flower farm messaged me saying, what a steal! And she was right. It was such a steal especially as evidenced by you going on FTD. The issue is that the people coming to the holiday market are just not people looking to spend really any $ on flowers. My normal flower customer base didn’t come so in that sense it could have been worse! But yeah regarding the basement, it was a huge amount of space cleared, enough to fit 2 more shelves for tulips!! And we are indeed getting hit with this crazy 11 degree weather later this week. Gotta cover more tomorrow outside!!

@@bareflowerfarm yeah the whole farmers market dynamic for selling flowers is way more complex than I imagined it to be and I think needs reevaluating in general for me anyway. I didn't get too gung ho about planting a lot of cool flowers luckily. Otherwise they'd just be toast. I'm mainly worried about my ranunculus but not much to do besides pile straw or landscape fabric on them. Can the tulips you have outside survive in their tarps and boxes? At first I thought it maybe was a different room I was imagining with all that stuff in there. Is it like an instant hot water thing now? The advances in the stuff are really interesting.
