Ойын-сауық

We are finally putting sawdust back in our chicken houses. It has been a long process of cleaning up and cleaning out after our last flock of chickens, but we are getting one step closer!

    You guys are making us want to get into commercial chicken farming. We are first generation homesteaders and raise meat chickens and pigs every year and have a bunch of laying hens. We want to be farmers but have no one that we know that does it. Thanks for uploading! It’s so inspiring! We are hoping to be able to get into it within the next year or 2.

    Thanks! So far it has been better. We still had a little spike in mortality early on but nothing like what we have been having.

    Really enjoy y’all’s channel look forward to every episode, I do have a question though do yall decide to spread y’all’s own shavings because over here we’re I live s Carolina/ Georgia area the chicken farmers around here use a shavings company out of Royston ga send their spreader trucks to spread it for them ? I’m assuming it’s alot cheaper doing it yourself?

    Typically we try to do our own if our spreader trucks are running good. We have done it before where we hire a crew to do it. It all just depends on what we have going and if we are willing to spend the time spreading it or the money not to spread it.

    Nice video. Got a question. Can the bird flu be Transmitted through the sawdust.?

  • @FarmerHunt

    @FarmerHunt

    In theory it’s probably possible. I believe the preheating of the houses before placing chickens would kill any possible traces of bird flu.

    We’re paying $600/ load for sawdust and I thought that was bad. $900… ouch!

    Wow, that would be nice! I’ve heard of some people paying $1200+/load for sawdust. Have you done a full clean out recently?

    @@FarmerHunt it’s been a couple years since I’ve done a total clean out. I have so much cake litter coming out I have to add a little sawdust every time. Didn’t used to be that way. Might be all the rain and damp weather we’ve had the last few years. I don’t know how this compares to y’all but I’ve been having about 25ish loads of cake from 4 houses.

    We really like to have an our a 4” depth. This time it was more like 3”. Shavings and sawdust are hard to come by right now so we just had to take what we could get. We usually like to use more shavings also which gives more depth. What tickness do y’all usually go for?
