We hope you enjoy watching David install a temperature probe (thermocouple) in his Fresh Roast SR800! We breakdown what a bean temperature probe is and why it's useful. We'll also discuss a few different options for thermometers, including the Mastech MS6514 and Phidgets. The next video we'll dive into Artisan and how it can be setup for the SR800. DISCLAIMER: Modifying your roaster may void your warranty, damage your roaster and there's a risk of personal injury if you're not careful!

I cannot get the mastech to show a temp. Using windows 11. the driver is fine (per windows) but it is reading Com3. The mastech probe works fine but artisan and the mastech arent "talking".

@@sdjewel1 make sure the usb link is turned on on your mastech (hold the button till it beeps). make sure your thermocouple is plugged into the T2 input in the mastech. make sure you hit the "on" and "start" buttons in artisan. One of those 3 is usually what's missing ☺
The drill bit stops are what I needed! Good info.
Nicely done David. That should help a lot of people.
Hey David and team. I got my extension tube from your store for my new SR800 today, woohoo! Can’t wait to take it on its maiden voyage!
Sweet - cheers! Can't wait for that Artisan video=)
Great job David. I’ll be modifying mine as well.

😁 more on the way soon!!!
Thanks for the video! Stay tuned. We will launch new products soon.
What great timing! I was just about to roast some Finca el Gobiado anaerobic rainbow Bourbon (from Captain's, of course :) ) on an SR800 w 12in Razzo. I'll be logging temps manually with a spreadsheet I made up, but will soon be designing an enclosure for all the Phidget goodies I got for Christmas. Happy roasting y'all!

@@TheCaptainsCoffee I can't wait to try it. It roasted really easily for a natural, I can sometimes get strange temp fluctuations I'm thinking because of the increased chaff, but this was really straightforward and hit C+ on the mark. And the smell was amazing! Just 7 short days before I can pull some shots of it, can't wait
Very good, thank you David!

Great Video as usual David,… For those of you that are using an Apple product ,,,unfortunately Artisan won’t connect. I wanted to use my IPad,so during the cold months I could actually come inside to monitor my roasts ,,,I found a App called Roastmaster that is very similar to Artisan,,,I utilize a Device called a ThermoBlue Q from ThermoWorks that interfaces my thermocouple to my IPad wirelessly,,,I’m roasting with a SR800 with the Razzo 12 “extension tube During my roast I can monitor bean Temp and ROR in real time,,,It works great Hope this might help someone out there Ken

Great video! Awesome to see you posting videos again! I hope you keep it up, your videos were really helpful getting me started with my SR800. I was hoping possibly sometime in the future you'd look at the Kaleido roasters that have recently become popular on the home roasting scene as well, I'd love to know your opinion on them!
@TheCaptainsCoffee

Those have exploded in popularity! If I can get my hands on one I certainly will make a video
Is the temperature that shows on the roaster usually higher than the one on the on the thermometer?
@TheCaptainsCoffee
5 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Think of the temp on the roaster as your oven's temperature and the probe as a meat thermometer. You always want the over temperature to be higher so your meat in the over cooks!
Thanks David, this is exactly the video I've been looking for. I just got the FreshRoast extension tube for my SR800, and I've been looking for info on sourcing and installing a thermocouple. If I wanted to use the dual input feature of the Mastech MS6514 to measure both the bean mass temp and the air temp, where would be the best place to position the second thermocouple?
@TheCaptainsCoffee
Жыл бұрын
I don't really worry too much about ET but most people place that probe as close to the outlet of air as possible. So you'd want a shorty positioned with the tip just inside the chaff collector lid!

Thanks for the amazing video! Would you be able to provide links to where I can get the phidgets and thermocouples? It looks like you all don't sell them, and I'm having trouble discerning where to get these from the internet.

Link to the links in the description! The mastech you may have to pick up from amazon or ebay since it looks like they aren't selling them direct lately
Hi, I've started my first few roasts with an SR800 and Artisan. So far so good! Question, do you see any value in logging ET for the SR roasters? Since I have spare thermocouple ports I feasibly could, but do you think it would provide any value in improving roasts? Seems like any changes I would make would be seen with BT. Thanks!
@TheCaptainsCoffee
Жыл бұрын
I don't personally bother tracking ET but I know plenty of roasters who do! I look at it as another tool in your toolbox. If you think it's useful, go for it, but I don't think it's NEARLY as useful as BT :)
The termocouple I bought is red and blue. If I understand correct is red (+) and blue (-) ?

Usually! But I'm not an electrician haha
I recently bought a SR 800 and the chaff collector cap now has a stainless steel plate rather than a mesh. I don't think a home drill would go through it. Any ideas for a hack short of getting a metal drill press?
@TheCaptainsCoffee
13 сағат бұрын
You simply need a drill bit intended for metal! If you are going to do this, be SURE to wear eye protection - metal shavings flying towards your eyes are no joke. Also putting a piece or two of masking tape over the intended hole before drilling will help keep shavings to a minimum
Hi, how much was the difference in bean temperature between the fresh roast display and the thermocouple reading?
@TheCaptainsCoffee
Ай бұрын
That depends on you and your roasting technique. The farther apart the 2 readings (with chamber temp higher) the harder you'll be pushing the roast and vice versa. I usually stay about 75 to 100F ahead of the bean temperature for a typical hot and fast roast meant to preserve acidity and origin flavor. This results in about 6 to 7 minutes to first crack

@@TheCaptainsCoffee thanks Captain, so if i install a bean temp probe on my fresh roast chamber that reads the bean temp and end the roast when it reads 402 would the fresh roast display be 75 degrees higher? Since it is reading the hot air coming in not the actual bean temp?
I ordered the Mastech MS6514 and it just arrived!! I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to get it to show up on Artisan on my Mac!! I downloaded the driver from Silicon Labs and installed it but still nada...What am I missing??
