    There are some days I get discouraged and rethink my backyard chicken endeavors. I admire your back story and family history of chicken keeping. The more I learn, the more I realize that it's not as difficult as I made it out to be in my head. Your blog posts and videos really do help and I am very excited about your new KZread Series. Thank you and I will definitely continue to follow your journey through chicken (and duck) keeping.

    Hiya Lisa, here's a little tip for making things in mason jars. The bottom portion of a regular blender pitcher fits right on that regular mouth mason jar. Sometimes makes things much easier :) Not necessarily mayonnaise because you have to add ingredients separately

    I put the cooled steamed eggs back in the pan, put the lid on and then shake it around a little. After the eggs play 'bumper cars,' you'll see the shells are cracked and pretty much slip right off. I then rinse them off in the bowl of ice water left over from the chilling process. Easy-peasy :-)

    Hi Lisa. So nice to find you. I am also Lisa. My great grandfather and my grandfather and my Father built the chicken barn here in Ellsworth ,Maine. I grew up with chickens all my life. I have had my own chickens for many many years. I have added ducks and turkeys to my flock and a couple of pigs threw out the years. This spring we get goats! Just getting to know you on here. Cool there is another Lisa in Maine with chickens!

    I love your site and your video. However, I raise ducks and chickens together and found that the dirty water can make my chickens sick. I started using a 50 gallon blue barrel with 2 poultry water cups on two sides. I put it in the shade. The ducks can't muck the water and the chickens have less chances of contracting coccidiosis. Not to mention it makes watering the chickens much easier. I keep one barrel per 25 chickens and using the apple cider vinegar you suggested helps keep the water fresh longer. I only put the poultry cups on two sides so I can easily push the barrel over when it is almost empty and then I use the vinegar and water method you suggested to clean it. Takes the same amount of time on cleaning day but you only have to clean it once every two weeks. You can refill it with water if there is no odor. Hope you try it, it will make your watering so much easier.

    Chicken Heaven On Earth How do you attach the chicken cups to the 50 gal drums? How does the water get from the inside of the drum to the water container?

  • @FreshEggsDaily

    @FreshEggsDaily

    5 жыл бұрын

    I've raised chickens and ducks together for almost ten years and they share the water. I've never had a single sick chicken with coccidiosis or anything else. Ducks need a deep water source to clean their nostrils, so they really need a tub to dunk their heads in. The little cups aren't sufficient. I don't believe there's any waterer that only needs to be cleaned every 2 weeks. Just because water "looks" clean doesn't mean that it is. Pathogens are invisible obviously. I'm curious how you determined that it was the water that gave your chickens coccidiosis?

    love the episode! Thank you! I wonder if that green goo is ok for budgies? i dont think that RX respiratory stuff would be, i see three ingredients that are potentially harmful to exotic birds. I know there are fresh natural herbs, spices and essential/fresh oils you can use for breathing and stress and repellents. Im always looking for better ways to take care of my budgies. I know this is for chickens but some ideas can work all around! hope there is another episode!

    Where did you buy the grit & eggshell dispensers? I don't have chickens yet but I'm looking forward & doing the research. In the mean time, I am collecting supplies & casing out feed sources etc. I live in southern Alberta Canada, on a farm, so I won't have to worry about neighbor issues. Thank you for all your work educating the rest of us.

    They are very similar to gravity feeders you can find for rabbits and other small-ish animals. Easier to find than vintage match dispensers, and likely less expensive, too. www.google.com/search?q=gravity+rabbit+feeder&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwicn9yBzpzYAhVP8WMKHZusBKoQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=662

    Concerning boiled eggs: I noticed that when I peel green eggs, the eggs peel very easy, the shell comes right off, fresh or old. When I peel my brown eggs the membrane sticks to the egg and makes a mess. Age doesn't seem to matter. Why?
