It's 1570. The Peace of Saint-Germain brings neither peace nor reconciliation.Religious tensions persist, and reach their height with the Capture of Brielle by the Sea Beggars.
Coligny advocates for a direct intervention in the Dutch Revolt. Meanwhile Catherine of Medici concentrates on the marriage of Henry of Navarre to Margaret of Valois.
After the marriage Coligny is shot by an assailant probably sent by the Guise. Catherine and Charles decide to finish the job and murder Coligny before he can retaliate.
This turns into the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre. The unsuccessful siege of La Rochelle follows. Charles IX dies and is succeeded by Henry III, but in the end he is forced to yield to the united forces of the Huguenots and the Malcontents.

    Great videos I'm enjoying as much as in the italian wars, the only think I'm not enjoying so much is the change of narrator. Many of you guys (independent history youtubers) that are not english or "anglosaxon" are changing to narrators with more... "mainstream" accents. As a Spanish who has learned english I am into a big large group of people who are consuming content in english for the simple reason that is the "lingua franca" of this age. And when that happens the language doesn't belong to the original culture, now its a share asset for every speaker and doesnt matter the accent. I really prefer the owners accent and narration. I understand that there are things in the context we dont know and considerations that are obscure to the audience but I encourage everyone to produce their art or crafting as he please and not have concerns over the opinion of others. Great work this channel doesnt have anything to envy to others like K&G.

    Do we know why Catherine made such a stark change in attitude, from holding a moderating position to essentially being viewed as the orchestrator of the Protestant massacres?

  • @pikeshotBattles

    @pikeshotBattles

    Because at this stage the Protestants became the radical ones, and Catherine's policy was always to ally with the more moderate fraction to sideline the more radical one.

    This massacre made England rightly paranoid that this sort of massacre would never happen in their realm, hence the reason why Elizabeth took a turn against Catholics, and why the nation produced Oliver Cromwell, it was well informed by the English ambassador to France, Sir Francis Walsingham! The reports shocked Protestant Northern Europe!

    @@5thMilitia Your welcome, re reading my previous message I think is somewhat confusing, the Duc de Anjou seen here besieging La Rochelle and then becoming elected King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania is not the same one involved in that fiasco in the Low Countries, this last one (Francis) was his younger brother who became later the new Duc de Anjou after his brother Henri became king of France (and the last of the Valois kings) , this younger Anjou also was a pretender for the hand of Queen Elizabeth, it seems that the queen never seriously considered marrying him but it was an useful tool against Philip of Spain and the Antwerp fiasco was a pretty useful excuse to formally brake any talks about marriage. BTW one question, which one of the House of Orange are you supposed to be, I must admit I am not particularly well versed in the history of that particular house.

    @@g.sergiusfidenas6650 Yeah the thing with Elizabeth is what made me think that is was the same Anjou because I knew that he tried to arrange a marriage. I am not suppossed to be someone from the House of Orange. Hendrik van Nassau-Ouwerkerk was the most important Dutch field commander at the time of the War of the Spanish Succession. He worked well with Malborough and they led the allies to victory in the Spanish Netherlands. He did actually descent from William of Orange but through an illegitimate line

    funny enough the election of anjou to be polish king was brokered by the Jew Josephus ashkenazim, who was a high official at the ottoman court and helped to broker the french ottoman colaboration at the time, and also did broker the deal that they would basicly compell the polish aristocrats to vote for anjou

    They gave up too easy and surrendered too many advantages without meaningful concessions. The military Impotence of Charles II and James II of England and the Revocation of The Edict of Nantes a century later would be the result. If not for the decisive action of one man in launching the largest seaborne invasion prior to D-Day, England would have fallen. That same man would establish a permanent bastion for my people in Ulster. The events of this video are like any other day of the week there, but they haven't been able to destroy us despite 400 years of unrelenting attacks and an influx of billions of dollars from America and Rome earmarked for "Tea-Roh-Rist" activities. (had to make the silly thing to foil the censor bots)
