    The subject of this sentence is 'I' not the film. The verb is 'want' and 'watch' which are both being done by 'I', the subject. How can the film be anything other than the object?

  • @jamiepudwell2667
    @jamiepudwell26672 жыл бұрын

    I need some clarification on your explanation. You say that qui refers to the subject of a sentence, however you do not specify which portion of the sentence. In the phrase you first use as an example: "I want to watch a movie," "I" is the subject and "a movie" is the object. The film is what is being acted upon by the subject, yet you refer to it as the subject. This only makes sense if you are referring to the subject of the subordinate clause that follows: "which is interesting," because the "movie" then becomes the subject of that subordinate clause which could be rephrased to "the movie is interesting." Is this the meaning you intended when you said that the movie is the subject of the sentence?

  • @ParapluieFrench

    @ParapluieFrench

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, strictly speaking calling something 'the subject / object of a sentence' is inaccurate because sentences can have more than one subject / object. I usually say it this way for the sake of simplicity; some learners aren't comfortable with terminology such as subordinate clause. To clarify: Je veux regarder un film qui est intéressant. Un film is the subject of the verb être, hence qui. Je veux regarder un film, ce qui est intéressant. Je veux regarder un film is the subject of the subordinate clause (as per your analysis), hence ce qui. I probably ought to refer to specific verbs when explaining this. 'Je' is the subject of 'vouloir', 'un film' is the object of 'regarder', and 'regarder un film' is the object of 'vouloir'. Does that make sense? I feel like I've answered about three questions there and you only asked one, so hopefully the answer you're looking for is there somewhere!

    Here's an interesting one. I was watching the Sound of Music with French subtitles and there's an interesting translation with several grammar features of note. What she says in English is "I think I'd better go see what Max is up to", which is subtitled as "Il vaut mieux que j'aille voir ce que fait Max". The il vaut que + subjunctive is great in itself, but then there's the use of 'ce que'. Could you discuss that a little? It's a relative pronoun in that I think the literal translation from the French would be "It would be better if I go see what Max is doing", or even "... go see that which Max does". How does it fit into what is discussed in the video etc? Cheers.

    I think you've just explained it! That usage falls into the "that which / 'what' but not a question" category. Your translation of "it would be better if I go and see what Max is doing" fits perfectly. I'm not sure there's much more to discuss!

    I get subject + ce qui, and object +ce que but what do you do when Ce qui and Ce que are at the start of the sentence? Eg Ce qui m'a plu dans ce film était le beau paysage. Can't work it out

  • @ParapluieFrench

    @ParapluieFrench

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question. The subject / object rule still applies, but I understand that it's less intuitive. Ce qui (what / that which) represents le beau paysage, which is the subject of the verb plaire. On the other hand, in "ce que j'aime le plus est le beau paysage", ce que also represents le beau paysage which is the object of the verb aimer. A good rule of thumb to follow is : ce que + subject (usually a noun or subject pronoun) ce qui + verb (although there may also be an object pronoun before the verb, so be careful!) It's not a perfect rule but certainly helps in most cases.

    @@ParapluieFrench Thanks for the immediate response. Still a bit confusing but I'm getting there. I cam up with this example - "Ce que je désire au monde, c’est la paix." Ce que is replacing the object 'la paix' and the rule above ce que + subject also is obvious I think....

    3:01- So the subject doesn't just stand for people, it can also be a film. the film isn't an object

  • @ParapluieFrench

    @ParapluieFrench

    3 жыл бұрын

    Correct. The subject-object distinction is all about a word's role in a sentence, so it doesn't really matter whether it's a person, thing, or anything else. It's unfortunate that we use the word 'object' which, of course, normally means a tangible thing. Grammatically speaking, an object is the person, thing etc. that is at the receiving end of an action. I hope that helps ☺️

    I am confused by the example of the film. If the whole sentence fragment proceeding the comma is the object, why wouldn't ce que be used following the object+que rule?

  • @alexandrakaminski6971

    @alexandrakaminski6971

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think you may have used the word "object" colloquially here when describing the sentence fragment at 2:31, but does the portion of the sentence before the comma actually become the subject of the verb?

  • @ParapluieFrench

    @ParapluieFrench

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've just watched it back and I think I misspoke initially. The sentence fragment preceding the comma is the subject of the verb 'être'. I do correct this later, but I can see why that was confusing! Thank you for pointing it out

  • @ParapluieFrench

    @ParapluieFrench

    Technically, 'ce qui' is the subject, but since it refers to everything before the comma, it is easier to think of that as the subject when explaining the grammar 😊
