Although there are some general rules to determine feminine and masculine, as taught in Alexa's video, I suggest that, whenever you learn a new French vocabulary word, learn it ALONG WITH its gender. For example: 1/ If you look a translation of a word from your language to French in the dictionary, ALWAYS look the gender (m.) or (f.). 2/ Likewise, if a person (teacher or else) tells how an object is called in French, think to ask wether it is masculine or feminine. DO not be satisfied with the word only. 2/ If you hear words from a native speaker or read these words, you may "guess" the gender of a specific word by paying attention to the use of definite or indefinite article (which you are now able to do thanks to Alexa's lesson). If you hear or see "une" or "la" attached to a word, you know this word is feminine. If you hear or see "un" or "le" attached to a word, you know this word is masculine. Again, you should ALWAYS learn a French word AND its gender. If not, I would say that you learnt half the word ! That's what I say to my own students. Courage! Great video Alexa ! I just wanted to add some additional tips. :-)

Alexa, only recently did I discover your lessons and now I am up to number eight. Your accent is clear, your speed is perfect and the amount of material in one lesson is just right for an 82-year-old man. I learned French at school and thought it was similar to medicine, tasting horrible but somehow making the victim better. It was a shock to find, on my first visit to France in my teens, that people spoke the language to babies, cats and dogs. Nobody had ever explained to me that it was a national language!

Hey Alexa! Learning a lot! Just want to say that my first language it’s Spanish and the indefinite articles are exactly the same! Didn’t realize till now that I don’t really know how i know which word uses un or una (spanish for une) 👀 i guess it’s something you learn with experience and I’m SO glad I don’t have to 😂

Bonjour madame 😃 Your videos are really very interesting and useful. Je veut savoir quand utiliser "des" et quand utiliser "les" dans une sentence? I really can't figure out when to use "des" and when to use "les" within a sentence. I get confused between these two.

Alexa, thanks for sharing and good work. A general tip for everyone: In English, an article comes before a noun snd NOT „in front of“ a noun. Because in front will mean after the noun. It is so because we entire English from left to right side. That is why, front side is the side a word progresses. I.e. the right side of it. It would be more correct, if you say that an article comes behind the noun. I know, Germans also make the same mistake because they also have similar concept of front like French. However, I still wanted to share this so that we can learn together. Thank you! We love your channel snd you sre duch s good teacher 👍🏽

I just realized I already know the gender of all nouns in French. My first language is Portuguese. I've learned French listening you speaking english, so I wasn't aware about this similarity. The genders are the same for both languages. If I know the meaning of a french word in Portuguese, I'll able to know the gender in French. It's much more complicated for who just speaks English. Basically, In English we just use gender rules for pronouns (possessive, object and etc).

Basically, it's easier to find out the french gender if: you're a Portuguese speaker and have some notion of English in general.

I’m also kinda privileged when it comes to learning French since Persian’s my first language, we may not have masculine or feminine versions of each word but we have loads of words in common. What can be kinda tricky is the fact that when i sometimes see a word in french ik I’ve heard it before in either of the languages ik( Persian, English, Arabic & a little German) but i can’t quite put my finger on it haha, I just get bombarded by my brain trying to guess which language it’s most similar to.
